Albert Camus once wrote 'when I describe what the catastrophe of modern man looks like, music comes into my mind - the music of Gustav Mahler'. If asked to specify a particular work, it is quite possible that Camus would have proposed Symphony No. 6 in A minor - the symphony that Bruno Walter claimed portrayed 'a terrifying, hopeless darkness, without a human sound'. Nevertheless, the period during which Mahler wrote his Sixth was one of the most successful and happiest of his life - prior to any marital difficulties, at the time of the birth of his second daughter Anna, his professional reputation growing.

Alma Mahler, in her memoirs, suggested that the symphony was in fact predicting instances of future distress in the composer's own life, and she and various commentators have proposed various interpretations of different elements. Most famous of these are possibly the hammer strokes in the Finale, falling, according to Alma, like 'blows of fate' on the 'hero' of the symphony.

But Osmo Vänskä has a reputation for engaging with even the most iconic scores at face value, avoiding preconceived ideas and 'time-honoured' traditions. His and the Minnesota Orchestra's recording of Mahler's Sixth follows upon the 2017 release of the composer's Fifth Symphony. Nominated to a 2018 Grammy Award, that interpretation has been described as 'at once committed and detached, intense and transcendentally timeless' (Norman Lebrecht) and 'an exceptional performance that promises great things to come' (allmusic.com).

Warner Classics is pleased to release the 12th annual 3CD set of highlights from the Progetto Martha Argerich in Lugano, described in The Times (London), as “community music-making on a deluxe scale, with performers and listeners mutually uplifted by music's wonders.” The recordings celebrate the musical fruits of a project in which young artists join seasoned performers, including Martha Argerich herself, to explore wide-ranging chamber music and orchestral repertoire, both well-known and rarely heard.

In addition to Ms Argerich, the 2014 Festival featured long-time collaborators such as Gidon Kremer, Gabriela Montero, Mischa Maisky, Gautier Capuçon and Lilya Zilberstein, as well as many of Ms Argerich's young protégées, including pianists Anton and Daniel Gerzenberg and violinists Geza Hosszu-Logocky and Andrey Baranov, winner of the 2012 Queen Elizabeth Competition. Also featured are pianists Alexander Mogilevsky, Francesco Piemontesi, Daniel Rivera, Dagmar Clottu, Akane Sakai, Eduardo Hubert, violinists Dora Schwarzberg and Michael Guttman, violist Nora Romanoff and cellists Jing Zhao and Mark Drobinsky.

The piano has been at the heart of all Lugano Festival programmes, from the Festival's inception, in performances of standard repertoire alongside rarely heard compositions and the 2014 season was no exception. Each year the Festival includes a piano concerto with Ms Argerich as soloist and this time it is Mozart's Concerto No 20 in D minor, K466, with the Orchestra della Svizzera Italiana conducted by Jacek Kaspszyk. Argerich also performs sonatas with each of two long-standing collaborators, cellist Mischa Maisky and violinist Gidon Kremer. She joins Maisky in Beethoven's Variations on 'Bei Männern, welche Liebe fühlen' based on Papageno and Pamina's duet in Mozart's opera Die Zauberflöte and Kremer, a champion of the work of Shostakovich's younger friend and colleague Mieczysław Weinberg, in the composer's Fifth Violin Sonata.

The Swiss pianist Dagmar Clottu appears for the first time in this series, joining Argerich in Francis Poulenc's Piano Sonata for four hands. Gautier Capuçon and Francesco Piemontesi perform Poulenc's Cello Sonata and Capuçon performs the Cello Sonata in D minor by Frank Bridge with Gabriela Montero.

This third disc in Naxos's Martucci Edition, comprising the complete orchestral works, continues with the First Piano Concerto which, while indebted to Chopin and Mendelssohn and prefiguring Rachmaninov, nonetheless has its own expressive immediacy.

By turns sensuous and serene, nostalgic and intensely yearning, The Song of Remembrance is a rare example of a song cycle for voice and orchestra composed in nineteenth-century Italy.

Volumes 1 and 2 of the Naxos Martucci Edition are available on 8570929 and 8570930.

2009 marks the centenary of the death of Giuseppe Martucci.

As comparably short operas, Cavalleria Rusticana and Pagliacci are often billed together, but seldom is the lead tenor making his double role-debut as Turiddu and Canio on the same evening. At the 2015 Salzburg Easter Festival Jonas Kaufmann did just that - to rapturous praise. Universally hailed as a coup for Kaufmann, the plaudits were also showered on Philipp Stölzl for his innovative compartmentalized staging which included live video projections while referencing the era of black-and-white movies.

With Joyce DiDonato as Cinderella capturing all hearts - not just Prince Charming's - Massenet's enchanting, sophisticated retelling of the classic fairytale makes its debut at Covent Garden in a charming and witty production by Laurent Pelly.

The Cinderella story seen through the eyes of the belle époque, Massenet's Cendrillon was first performed at the Opéra-Comique in Paris in 1899 and its gorgeous score embraces pathos, pastiche, broad humour, subtle eroticism and sheer magic.

Neglected for much of the 20th century, this entrancing and often surprising opera has found a firmer place in the repertoire over the past 30 years. In Summer 2011 its debut at London's Royal Opera House was built around mezzo soprano Joyce DiDonato, who first took on the title role at the Santa Fe festival in 2006; there, as at Covent Garden, the staging was by French director Laurent Pelly, celebrated for his production of Donizetti's La Fille du regiment with Natalie Dessay and Juan Diego Flórez (Virgin Classics DVD 5099951900298).

The décor is inspired by a venerable volume of Charles Perrault's fairy tales bound in red morocco leather, and the dominant colours are white, black and crimson, though mauve is chosen for the body-hugging gown worn by the voluptuous, capricious Fairy Godmother of Eglise Gutierrez as she scales spellbinding coloratura heights.
