Cellist Zuill Bailey's 2010 recording of J.S. Bach's Suites for Solo Cello (TEL3197802) went straight to the top of the Billboard classical chart. His new Telarc album is devoted to the music of Brahms, and includes the Sonatas in E minor, opus 38 and F major, opus 99 alongside several rarely-recorded song transcriptions. Bailey's musical partner here is his longtime friend, the pianist Awadagin Pratt.

Zuill Bailey made his Telarc debut with Russian Masterpieces for Cello early in 2009, a disc which featured music by Tchaikovsky and Shostakovich. Towards the end of last year he joined forces with pianist Simone Dinnerstein in a critically acclaimed recording of Beethoven's Complete Works for Piano and Cello. Since then his recording of J S Bach's cello suites has been a massive success particularly in the USA where it spent four weeks in a row at No. 1 on the Billboard classical chart, and even made the Top 30 in the New Artists chart.

Along with Brahms' Cello Sonatas in E Minor and F Major, the album includes the composer's “Sonatensatz”, the so-called “F-A-E Scherzo”, which comes from a collaborative violin sonata composed by Brahms, Robert Schumann and fellow composer Albert Dietrich. It is heard here transcribed for the cello from the violin original. Also featured on the disc are transcriptions for cello and piano of seven of his songs including the ever-popular 'Wiegenlied' (Lullaby), 'Melodien,' 'Sapphische Ode' (Sapphic Ode), 'Feldeinsamkeit' (Solitude in the Fields), 'Minnelied' (Love Song) and 'Lerchengesang' (Lark Song).

2013 marks the 100th birthday of Benjamin Britten and EMI pays tribute to this key figure of 20th century music with the release of a brand new recording of his War Requiem, with a stellar line up of soloists - Anna Netrebko, Ian Bostridge and Thomas Hampson.

Considered to be Britten's crowning choral work, and for some possibly the pinnacle of his entire output, it was commissioned for the festival marking the consecration of the new cathedral at Coventry.

Joshua Bell (violin/director)
Academy of St. Martin in the Fields

Awards
Grammy Awards 61st Awards (2019) Nominee - Classical Instrumental Solo

A new Sony Classical release from Grammy Award-winning violinist Joshua Bell showcases two masterpieces from romantic composer Max Bruch. The album features Bell's first recording of the virtuosic Scottish Fantasy as well as a new recording of the Violin Concerto No. 1 in G minor, which he first recorded over thirty years ago with the Academy of St Martin in the Fields and Sir Neville Marriner. Now, as Music Director of the Academy, Bell both performs and directs the orchestra and offers a fresh take on the Bruch Concerto in addition to a thrilling performance of the Scottish Fantasy. In recent years, the Scottish Fantasy has become a favourite performance piece for Bell and his affection for the piece runs deep and with good reason: “My father's descendants were from Scotland, and I grew up hearing stories about how my great- grandfather and great-great-grandfather fought in the Black Watch in Scotland. My dad was proud of his Scottish heritage, and this connection makes the melodies in Bruch's Scottish Fantasy even more meaningful to me.” The Fantasy bristles with the snap and lilt of Scottish folk songs and Bell goes on to say “It is one of the most beautiful and touching pieces I know, and so brilliantly orchestrated. It is a unique 'concerto,' not following the traditional three-movement form. Each of its four movements tells a story.”

Bell recalls how Bruch's ever-popular Violin Concerto No.1 was the first major concerto he learned as an 11-year-old. “This piece is connected to so many memories!” Bell mentions that the great nineteenth-century violinist, Joseph Joachim, who figured prominently in Bell's recent Sony Classical release, For the Love of Brahms, placed Bruch's concerto in the same league as those of Beethoven, Brahms, and Mendelssohn and called it “the most seductive of violin concertos.” Bell says, “It is a huge audience favorite because it is so rich and lush. It has excitement, power, passion, and intimacy--it's got everything!” “Now after more than thirty years of performing this concerto and with a variety of conductors, I am still inspired by the work, and I continue to find myself exploring fresh ideas and new possibilities for expression. As Music Director, I now have the opportunity to conduct while playing the solo part and it actually brings a whole new dimension to this piece. The Academy of St Martin in the Fields has become my musical family over the past decade, and I feel we have special chemistry!'

Max Bruch (1838-1920) was born in Cologne and is remembered mostly for his first Violin Concerto with an extremely beautiful slow movement written in 1868 and his Scottish Fantasy, also for Violin and orchestra, dating from 1880 is increasing in popularity. His music, whilst it has echoes of Mendelssohn and Schumann, foreshadows Bruckner and the late German Romantics. It is therefore most useful to have a collection of his three symphonies to help us assess of the development of the Symphony in the later half of the nineteenth century. The first dates from the same year as the famous Violin Concerto and was dedicated to Brahms who was Bruch's elder by five years, the second from four years later. The last had its premiere in 1882 in New York whilst the composer was nearing the end of an unhappy three years as music director of the Liverpool Philharmonic Society. The set is completed by recordings making their first appearance on CD, firstly the Concerto for two pianos which it is believed to date from 1911 (it does not appear in the list of works as part of the article in the New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians published in 1980) and secondly two sets of piano works dating from when Bruch was in his early twenties.

Christian Thielemann and the Staatskapelle Dresden already released the Bruckner symphonies Nos. 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9 and continue their Bruckner Cycle at the Philharmonie in Munich with Symphony No. 1 in C minor, Bruckner's first masterful composition. Thielemann, widely regarded as the leading Brucknerian of our age, opted for the livelier early original Linz version of this symphony. Buckner himself called it 'a cheeky wench' and said about the finale: 'Never again have I been so audacious and bold'.

SERGIU CELIBIDACHE - BRUCKNER SYMPHONY NO. 4
1983

Orchestra, Chorus: Münchner Philharmoniker
Conductor: Sergiu Celibidache

The Romanian conductor Sergiu Celibidache (1912-96) was one of the most adamant personalities in the music world. He rehearsed three times as much as other conductors and avoided making recordings because he believed they were a false representation his musical intentions. This concert from the Herkulessaal in Munich captures one of the rare occasions on which he consented to a recording being made. He conducts the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra with Anton Bruckner's “Romantic” Symphony No. 4 in E flat major.

Maestro Sergiu Celibidache (1912-1996) was one of the most uncompromising figures in the music world, demanding three times as much rehearsal time as other conductors and with an ardent dislike of making recordings because he feared they misrepresented his musical intentions. He agreed to set aside his long-held antipathy to recordings of his work to enable the cameras to capture this concert from the Philharmonie in Munich, in which he conducts the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra.
