Emmanuel Pahud, principal flutist of the Berliner Philharmoniker, celebrates the 300th birthday of Frederick the Great with a concert recorded in the historic Royal Theater of the Neues Palais Potsdam, one of the architectural gems within the world-heritage palace ensemble of Sanssouci built by the Prussian king.

Trevor Pinnock is one of the pioneers of the modern revival of early music performance and he appears as a guest conductor with many of the world's leading symphony orchestras. Emmanuel Pahud is one of today's most exciting and adventurous musicians. Accompanied by the Kammerakademie Potsdam, Phaud and Pinnock perform works by C.P.E Bach, Franz Benda, Johann Joachim Quantz and a composition written by Frederick the Great himself.

Anthony Rolfe-Johnson (tenor)
Academy of St Martin in the Fields, Sir Neville Marriner

The brainchild of Neville Marriner, the Academy of St Martin in the Fields was founded in 1959, quickly becoming an example of the highest level of chamber musicianship in Britain, paving the way for the revival of Baroque performances.

Described by Denis Stevens as owning 'more sense of style than all the chamber orchestras in Europe', the Academy made a prolific number of recordings over the years, becoming the most recorded chamber orchestra in the world.

Having taken conducting lessons from Pierre Monteux, Marriner became known for his rhythmic and precise style, and was responsible for the refined string sound for which the Academy became famous.

Marriner's rendition of Mendelssohn's 'Italian' Symphony is energetic and committed, yet sensitively communicated. Rolfe-Johnson's Proms performance of Britten's Les Illuminations took place at the height of his career. He performed at the world's major opera chouses (the Royal Opera House, La Scala, The Met) and with major orchestras (New York Philharmonic, Boston Symphony Orchestra), recording mainly for Hyperion. This performance is utterly convincing.

Beethoven's Große Fuge is a performance of Marriner's own arrangement for chamber orchestra. Their recording of Beethoven 3 is described in the Penguin Guide as having the impression 'of weight and strength, coupled with a rare transparency of texture and extraordinary resilience of rhythm'.

The 'interpretive skill and musicianship' of Marriner and the ASMF, his 'superb ensemble' are described in the Penguin Guide featuring Marriner's recording of the Handel Concerti grossi on Decca.

This is the first DVD release of this material.

German virtuoso Julia Fischer astonished the public and her musical peers by performing two concertos - each on different instruments - on this remarkable 2008 New Year's Day concert.

Julia Fischer's playing of Saint-Saëns's Violin Concerto No. 3 not only attests to her position at a summit of perfection attained to by few violinists, but her magisterial performance of the Grieg Piano Concerto establishes her as a pianist of international stature.

Marking her DVD debut for Decca, Julia Fischer's compelling versions of these concertos are available only in this format, since this musical wonder has recorded neither for CD.

The DVD includes an extensive interview with Julia Fischer, who candidly discusses her life, art, and music (in German, with multi-language subtitles).

Set in Egypt, Massenet's drama 'Thais' (1894) traces the ill-fated attempt of the monk, Athanaël, to rescue the soul of the celebrated Alexandrian courtesan, Thaïs. Though she is presently living with his wealthy friend Nicias, Athanaël persuades her to renounce her way of life and riches, but as she dies in the desert in a state of grace, he realises he has succumbed to her worldly charms and begs God for mercy.

Renée Fleming triumphs as the glamorous courtesan Thaïs in Massenet's romantic tragedy set in fourth century Alexandria and the Egyptian desert. The timeless struggle between earthly desire and spiritual redemption finally destroys the resolve of the monk Athanaël (Thomas Hampson), just as the newly penitent Thaïs ascends heavenward. Jesús López-Cobos gives a masterly performance of Massenet's sensuous score, with concert master David Chan contributing a ravishing 'Méditation'.

The first Met staging in over 30 years of Massenet's Thaïs is released on a starry DVD sure to win this beguiling French opera many new fans.

Renée Fleming is Thaïs to the life. She sings Massenet's taxing role with the utmost ease and beauty of tone while looking as glamorous as her famous predecessors.

Fleming's co-star is the great American baritone Thomas Hampson in the role of Athanaël, a part he sings and acts with mastery.

Juan Diego Flórez (Elvino), Natalie Dessay (Amina), Michele Pertusi (Count Rodolfo), Jennifer Black (Lisa), Jane Bunnell (Teresa), Jeremy Galyon (Alessio), Bernard Fitch (Notary)
Orchestra & Chorus of the Metropolitan Opera, New York, Evelino Pidò (conductor) & Mary Zimmerman

Bellini's romantic opera 'La sonnambula' (1831), hinges on the love and misunderstanding between Elvino and Amina (the 'sleepwalker' of the title). Discovered in the bedroom of Rodolfo, Amina is assumed to have been unfaithful, and Elvino cancels their wedding. But in the dramatic final scene, he witnesses Amina sleepwalking, understands her innocence, and all ends happily. Mary Zimmerman's production plays with the dual realities of a rehearsal of the opera and a performance of the opera itself.

In his latest Decca DVD release, bel canto star Juan Diego Flórez assumes the role of Elvino in Bellini's romantic drama, playing opposite the mercurial French soprano, Natalie Dessay, in the MET's striking, modern-dress production, screening live worldwide in March 2009.

The MET's 'La Sonnambula' website reads: “Mary Zimmerman, who directed Natalie Dessay in last season's hit new production of Lucia di Lammermoor, underlines La Sonnambula's dual elements of sleep and wakefulness in an intriguing staging set in the present. Bellini's hauntingly lyrical score soars as performed by Dessay and Juan Diego Flórez, back from their sensational run together in La Fille du Régiment in leading opera houses around the world.”

The DVD release will benefit from the addition of the customary MET backstage and interview footage, familiar to devotees of their live worldwide cinema broadcasts.

Following Flórez's latest DVD release (Cenerentola, in October 2009), 2010 will also see a second Flórez DVD - Bellini's 'I Puritani', with Nino Machaidze, from Bologna.

Filmed in High Definition Widescreen.

Adriana Lecouvreur, although a melodramatic fictional tale, is based on a real-life actress of the ComÉdie-FranÇaise, and is the only one of Cilea's operas to have held a place in the repertory, albeit on the fringes. The opera is tuneful and melodic with some arias that are also occasionally heard in recital but its main challenge is for a dramatic soprano and this is amply demonstrated here by Renata Scotto.

This beloved operetta, which takes place during Carnival celebrations in 18th-century in Venice, shows Strauss's descriptive writing at its best, helped by his love of Italy. Eine Nacht in Venedig inspired Strauss to compose some of his most successful operetta-music. The Italian atmosphere, the sun, the sea and the Venetian way of life appealed to his creative imagination

The stellar cast includes such eminent singer as Anton de Ridder, Sylvia Geszty, Julia Migenes and Trudeliese Schmiedt; Kurt Eichhorn conducts the Münchner Rundfunkorchester

This film-production from 1973 was made by the well known Czech conductor and stage director Vaclav Kaslik

Among other songs in this operetta, two in particular immediately come to the music-lover´s mind: the infatuating yearning “Komm in die Gondel mein Liebchen” and the captivating waltz “Ach wie so herrlich zu schauen sind all die reizenden Frauen”
