From folk music to film music, the violin is the star of instruments. Millions of children all over the world learn how to play it and the top performers make it sound beautiful. They can also do clever things on it, with their fingers whizzing up and down, and the bow moving so fast you can hardly see it. Take the music of Mr Paganini on track 1 - he really knew how to show off. Here is the violin in the spotlight: listen to it sing!

Listen to the piano turn into a bumblebee, a donkey, trolls, a bird, a horse and a butterfly! Sometimes it isn't anything except a piano, but the music coming out of it is exciting and beautiful. Can you spot Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star? Mozart makes it twinkle in all kinds of different ways. There are so many things to enjoy here, and all from the most amazing musical instrument: the piano.

His extraordinary work for choir, saxophone and organ, Son of God Mass, receives a new recording from the young voices of one of Westminster Choir College of Rider University's fi nest chamber choirs under the leading American choral conductor James Jordan. It is heard alongside a collection of première recordings of other works associated with life and death, including the Requiem canticorum and Living Voices, a work to commemorate the dead of 9/11 with a poem by Andrew Motion.

A welcome new addition to the English Choral Music series on Naxos, and a glorious follow-up to the two best-selling Rutter titles in the catalogue - Requiem and Mass of the Children.

The three works heard on this disc span a period of fifteen years from 1974-1990. John Rutter's Gloria was a milestone in his career as it was the first major commission he had received from overseas, and sowed the seeds of his popularity in America. It remains an evergreen favourite with choirs worldwide for its freshness, drama and sheer beauty.

The joyous setting of the Magnificat was conceived, in the composer's words, as 'a bright Latin-flavoured fiesta' and is performed here in its version for choir, organ and chamber orchestra. This delightful choral album concludes with Rutter's setting of the Te Deum, one of the church's most ebullient hymns of praise to the Almighty.

The Choirs of St Albans Cathedral, conducted by Andrew Lucas are on fine form in this their first recording for Naxos. “The sound of the choir is full and colourful throughout and the boys produce a very fine sound indeed matching their well-developed sound with mature musicianship” The Organ

Rodolphe Kreutzer's final three violin concertos are among his greatest achievements as a composer.

While handling a Beethovenian orchestra with a craftsman's sure touch, it is the purity and depth of tone, energetic fire and complete technical mastery required of the soloist that set these works among the most perfect examples of the French violin concerto.

Axel Strauss, Professor of Violin at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music and heard on concert stages worldwide, has been acclaimed “an excellent violinist who plays these with wit and verve” (Limelight).

Naxos plans to record all of Kreutzer's violin concertos.
