This premiere recording of master percussionist Dame Evelyn Glennie's new international ensemble offers a programme of fourteen improvised pieces that push the boundaries of spontaneous music-making. The group brings together musical traditions from four varied cultures (Scotland, Serbia, the United States and Denmark) but with a common goal: to create spontaneous music of great beauty and power which utilizes the basic formal elements of musical composition- melody, harmony, rhythm, and form.

Count Imre Széchényi of Sárvár-Felsovidék moved in the highest echelons of the Austrian diplomatic service, in a career that ran parallel with his musical activities. Széchényi's dances, all but three of which were composed in St Petersburg, were popular in his day, and of a quality that saw them placed in concert programmes by his friend Johann Strauss II. Appearing here in their premiere recordings, they reveal a brilliant collection of mazurkas and polkas with a keen sense of humour and deep feeling in their arching musical brush strokes and romantic melodies.

Tianwa Yang is 'an artist of exceptional technique and musicianship' (BBC Music Magazine) and has established herself as a leading international performer and recording artist, winning the Annual Prize of the German Record Critics 2014 for her acclaimed recordings of Sarasate's complete violin works. Her 'stunning effortless virtuosity' and 'uncanny affinity for Spanish music' (All Things Strings) make her the ideal advocate for the music presented on this recording. The Introduction et Rondo capriccioso is a glittering showcase imbued with the passion of Iberian dance, while the Havanaise in E major is a languorous habanera. Less frequently heard are the evocative Caprice andalou, the songful Romance in C major, the rhapsodic Morceau de concert, and the improvisatory La Muse et le Poete.

Commotio, Matthew Berry, Bob Chilcott

Bob Chilcott is one of Britain's most popular and respected composers and his choral music is performed worldwide. He has always embraced a broad stylistic palette and his writing for voice combined with jazz instrumentation gives these works a sense of vitality and energy. Performed by leading jazz soloists and Commotio, the distinguished promoters of contemporary repertoire, this sequence of brilliant villanelles, folk song arrangements and witty settings reveals once again the breadth of Chilcott's musical imagination. Chilcott has enjoyed a lifelong association with choral music, as a composer, conductor, and singer. He was a chorister and choral scholar in the choir of King's College, Cambridge and for twelve years was a member of the vocal group The King's Singers. In 1997 he became a full time composer. A Little Jazz Mass, Requiem, and St. John Passion are among a number of works from his prolific output which are performed worldwide. He has written large-scale works, including The Angry Planet, community-based projects, pieces for children, and a significant amount of music for the church. In 2017 Chilcott was awarded an Honorary Fellowship of The Royal School of Church Music.

A prolific composer of instrumental music including symphonies, Leopold Koželuch was one of the most prominent Bohemian composers working in Vienna during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. His best works reveal an impressive command of the musical language of viennese classicism and at times a lyricism that seems to foreshadow the youthful works of Schubert. This recording draws on original sources and corrects a number of mistakes encountered in previously published versions.

These two concertos - one a staple of the repertoire, the other almost unknown - share melodic richness and a Spanish influence. Lalo's Symphonie espagnole reflects the quicksilver technique of its dedicatee, Pablo de Sarasate, in its ingenious and virtuosic passagework, with its moods and rhythms indelibly Iberian in feel. Joan Manén, in his day almost as famous as his fellow Catalan Pau Casals, was an admired virtuoso violinist and a prominent composer. His Concierto español, the first of three violin concertos, is suffused with technical demands, lyric warmth, and rhapsodic nostalgia. Soloist Tianwa Yang's Sarasate recordings have received international acclaim.

Winner of the prestigious Echo Klassik Instrumentalist of the Year 2015 Award for her Naxos recording Ysaÿe's 6 Sonatas for Solo Violin, the Best Up-and-Coming Artist 2014 Award and the Annual Prize of the German Record Critics 2014 for her Naxos recordings of the Mendelssohn Violin Concertos and Complete Music for Violin by Sarasate, Tianwa Yang is referred to as “an unquestioned master of the violin” by American Record Guide who “rises above her competition” (Fanfare), while quickly establishing herself as a leading international performer and recording artist. Of her previously released recordings of Pablo de Sarasate's complete works for violin, David Hurwitz of ClassicsToday.com calls Ms. Yang a “sensationally talented violinist,” while All Things Strings speaks of her “stunning effortless virtuosity” and “uncanny affinity for Spanish music.”

Joseph Haydn claimed to have discovered the string quartet form by accident. His Op.1 no.1 has the cheerful five-movement form of a Divertimento, while the glorious and harmonically daring Op.77 no.1 was among the last he completed in the genre. Falling between the two, Op.33 no.5 is full of rhythmic surprises and a theme that gives it the nickname, 'How do you do?'

Today, the Goldmund Quartet is considered one of the most exciting young string quartets in Europe. Since their début at Munich's Prinzregententheater, the quartet has appeared at international festivals such as the Festival Aix-en-Provence, Festival de Música y Danza Granada, Ludwigsburger Schlossfestspiele and Heidelberger Frühling. The quartet has been awarded several prizes, including a Yehudi Menuhin Live Music Now scholarship, and recently a scholarship from the Deutscher Musikwettbewerb as well as the 2015 Bavarian Young Artist Award. Concert recordings have been made by the Bavarian Radio, ARD, Deutschlandradio and Einsfestival.

Composer Michael Daugherty creates colourful musical portraits in this recording, featuring larger-than-life personalities drawn from 20th-century American culture. Tales of Hemingway is a dramatic cello concerto, evoking the turbulent life, adventures, and literature of author Ernest Hemingway. American Gothic is a dynamic concerto for orchestra, reflecting on the creative world of Iowa artist Grant Wood. Once Upon a Castle is a virtuosic sinfonia concertante for organ and orchestra, inspired by the rich history of the Hearst Castle, built high upon the California Pacific coast by billionaire Randolph Hearst, the subject of Orson Welles' film Citizen Kane. Under the baton of Music Director Giancarlo Guerrero, the Nashville Symphony is joined by Zuill Bailey, one of the leading cellists of his generation, and organist Paul Jacobs.

Hermann Goetz's lifespan was no longer than Mozart's, and though much admired by contemporaries, as a tragic genius his music became almost forgotten, and the domain of but a few connoisseurs such as Gustav Mahler. Goetz's style remained closer to Schumann and Mendelssohn, preferring lyricism and clarity to the more radical approaches of Liszt and Wagner. The virtuoso First Piano Concerto was a student work, its lovely central Adagio sharing a use of colourful wind parts with the freshly optimistic Second Piano Concerto composed six years later.

Grigory Sokolov has gained an almost mythical status amongst music-lovers and pianophiles throughout the world. He is considered by many today to be the world's greatest living pianist. Ever since his first recital in Leningrad. He has amazed everyone again and again with the enormous breadth of his repertoire and his huge, almost physical musical strength. Grigory Sokolov was largely unknown in the West, however, until the late 1980's, but is now rightfully regarded as a giant of the piano. Sokolov's concerts are anticipated with eagerness where ever he travels. He's not been outside of Europe for several years now, preferring to tour Europe. His programmes change twice a year, Sokolov mining the music he plays for every jewel before he feels ready to consider a new work. Sokolov prefers his CD's to be recorded live is not surprising, since he likes to capture the sacred moments of a real, live concert and avoid the sterile atmosphere of a studio. Ludwig van Beethoven's Piano Sonata No. 29 in B-flat major, Op. 106 (known as the Große Sonate für das Hammerklavier, or more simply as the Hammerklavier) is a piano sonata widely viewed as one of the most important works of the composer's third period and among the greatest piano sonatas. Completed in 1818, it is often considered to be Beethoven's most technically challenging piano composition and one of the most demanding solo works in the classical piano repertoire.

Hummel, conductor, composer and pianist, whose death ended the great Viennese lineage of Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven, produced a series of inspired arrangements of Mozart's symphonies between 1823 and 1824. As a child of eight he had lodged and studied with Mozart, and these arrangements demonstrate a profound understanding of his teacher's art. He refused to vary a single harmony but did make some changes to accommodate contemporary early Romantic taste, and to bring out intensity of orchestral colour as well as offering opportunities for pianistic virtuosity.
