* THE SUNDAY TIMES BESTSELLER * 'Stand-up comedy raised me. It taught me all the skills I need for life, except tax accounting.' 'Very, very funny - a great read' Gary Davies, The Zoe Ball Breakfast Show 'Riveting' Daily Mail 'An utterly sincere guide for people to achieve bigger things in life' Guardian Cheaper than Scientology, quicker than therapy and much less boring than church - this is the hugely funny and insightful book about happiness by top comedian Jimmy Carr, and anyone feeling stuck in a rut should devour it. In his mid-twenties, Jimmy was bored, boring, unfulfilled and underachieving. He wasn't exactly depressed, but he was very sad. Think of a baby owl whose mum has recently died in a windmill accident. He was that sad. This book tells the story of how Jimmy turned it around and got happy, through the redemptive power of dick jokes. Written to take advantage of the brief window between the end of lockdown and Jimmy getting cancelled for saying something unforgivable to Lorraine Kelly, this book is as timely as it is unnecessary. Because you might be interested in Jimmy's life but he's damn sure you're a lot more interested in your own, Before & Laughter is about both of you. But mainly him. It tells the story of Jimmy's life - the transformation from white-collar corporate drone to fake-toothed donkey-laugh plastic-haired comedy mannequin - while also explaining how to turn your own life around and become the you you've always dreamt of being. At just GBP20, it's cheaper than Scientology, quicker than therapy, and significantly less boring than church. Before & Laughter contains the answers to all the big questions in life, questions like: * What's the secret to happiness? * Is Jimmy wearing a wig? * What happened with that tax thing? * What's the meaning of life? * Is Jimmy's laugh real? * Can those teeth bite through vibranium? And for readers in the West Country: yes, there are pictures (actually, sorry, there are no pictures, but there's a book about a hungry caterpillar you'll love). Because it's Jimmy Carr - recently scientifically proved to be the funniest comedian in the UK - there are jokes, jokes and more jokes throughout. If laughter really was the best medicine, the NHS would be handing out this book in Nightingale Hospitals. Fascinating, thoughtful and insightful - are all words that appear in the book.

A Manchester lad from Irish Traveller stock, born three months premature and weighing just a pound at birth, Tyson (named after his father's boxing hero) grew up to become one of the most unlikely heavyweight champions in history. THE PEOPLE'S CHAMPION.
Like all the greatest stories, though, there is redemption and Tyson defies all the odds and literally drags himself to his feet. 10 million people around the globe watched Fury fight Wilder in the biggest fight of the boxing calendar. When Chris Hani, leader of the South African Communist Party and heir apparent to Nelson Mandela, was brutally slain in his driveway in April 1993, he left a shocked and grieving South Africa on the precipice of civil war. But to 12-year-old Lindiwe, it was the love of her life, her daddy, who had been shockingly ripped from her life. In this intimate and brutally honest memoir, 36-year-old Lindiwe remembers the years she shared with her loving father, and the toll that his untimely death took on the Hani family. She lays family skeletons bare and brings to the fore her own downward spiral into cocaine and alcohol addiction, a desperate attempt to avoid the pain of his brutal parting.
While the nation continued to revere and honour her father's legacy, for Lindiwe, being Chris Hani's daughter became an increasingly heavy burden to bear.

'For as long as I can remember, I'd grown up feeling that I was the daughter of Chris Hani and that I was useless. My father was such a huge figure, such an icon to so many people, it felt like I could never be anything close to what he achieved - so why even try? Of course my addiction to booze and cocaine just made me feel my worthlessness even more'.

In a stunning turnaround, she faces her demons, not just those that haunted her through her addiction, but, with the courage that comes with sobriety, she comes face to face with her father's two killers - Janus Walus, still incarcerated, and Clive Derby Lewis, released in 2015 on medical parole. In a breathtaking twist of humanity, while searching for the truth behind her father's assassination, Lindiwe Hani ultimately makes peace with herself and honours her father's gigantic spirit.

A story of fighting to belong in a world that wasn't built for all of us and of one woman's activism--from the streets of Brooklyn and San Francisco to inside the halls of Washington--Being Heumann recounts Judy Heumann's lifelong battle to achieve respect, acceptance, and inclusion in society. Paralyzed from polio at eighteen months, Judy Heumann began her struggle for equality early in life. From fighting to attend grade school after being described as a 'fire hazard' to later winning a lawsuit against the New York City school system for denying her a teacher's license, to leading the section 504 sit-in that led to the creation of the Americans with Disabilities Act, Judy's actions set a precedent that fundamentally improved rights for disabled people around the globe. Candid, intimate, and irreverent, Judy Heumann's memoir about resistance to exclusion invites readers to imagine and make real a world in which we all belong.

Born in Swansea, AWJ made his test debut for Wales in June 2006 against Argentina, and came to prominence in the 2007 campaign before Wales won the Grand Slam in 2008. And he has not looked back. Mteto Nyati knew years ago as a schoolboy in Mthatha, working behind the counter at his mother's trading store, that he wanted to fix and build things. After completing his studies at Natal University in Mechanical Engineering, he turned down a Rhodes scholarship and headed for Johannesburg to take up a position at Afrox. He was the only black engineer and the sole advice he received from his superiors was 'don't mess up'. He didn't and today is one of South Africa's top CEOs, having steered Microsoft and MTN out of troubled times. He is currently guiding the transition of Altron from a family business, started at the height of apartheid, into a high-performing international IT company with a social conscience. This is his inspirational story about shattering stereotypes with persistent hard work and dedication.

Beurtelinge se stralende eerlikheid maak dit ʼn waardevolle werk. Daar is juwele in hierdie teks.

Forty years after Steve Biko's tragic death, this, his first comprehensive biography, is republished in an updated anniversary edition. As leading anti-apartheid activist and thinker, Biko created Black Consciousness, which has particular resonance again today. His death by torture, at the hands of the police, robbed South Africa of one of its most gifted leaders. Biko's intellectual legacy cannot be overestimated, and his braod appeal was again witnessed in the recent student protest in South Africa where his name appeared on many a poster. Chapters include:'¢ Biko's childhood in Ginsberg; his father's early death and his relationship with his brother '¢ Lovedale College, discovering politics - and expulsion '¢ Biko's student years in Durban, his disillusion with white left politics and dalliances with women '¢ SASO and Black Consciousness, new thinking on old problems - moving towards radicalism '¢ The awkward issues of gender and sexism, Biko's wife Ntsiki and his relationship with Mamphela Ramphele '¢ Biko's impact on the student uprising of June 1976 '¢ The King William's Town years: Starting a health project and defying banning orders. Biko's death.'¢ After Biko - his impact and the problems in current South African politics.

Herman Mashaba rose from humble beginnings to become one of South Africa's wealthiest and best-known entrepreneurs, as well as Mayor of Johannesburg.
His remarkable story begins in a small village in Gauteng, where we meet the cocky youngster who refused to settle for a future that offered nothing. Forced to drop out of university, the determined young man fought to establish the first black-owned haircare company in South Africa. Mashaba struggled every day of his life - against apartheid, with its demeaning laws, and against his competitors to grab market share for his business. In the process, Mashaba learnt lessons that few business schools teach today.

This is a story of survival, and of determination in adversity. It is also a love story between Herman and Connie, his wife of 35 years, who embarked on this journey together. Mashaba shows the importance of having a vision, daring to dream it, and then making it happen. This inspiring book will leave you with the question: “If he did it, why can't I?”

HERDRUK
Juliana Coetzer woon in Vermont.
