In this personal memoir; Ayanda tracks her journey back to self in a bid to return to her true self and to redefine her worth by challenging cultural conditioning, social stereotypes, family expectations and people's opinions of her.

Ayanda shares intimate details of her most profound experiences as a young girl in the township in a toxic relationship with a high flying gangster: As a young woman falling pregnant out of wedlock and the ostracism she encountered. As a young black woman in a white male dominated corporate environment. As an artist who didn't quite fit into mainstream popularity and her battle to maintain her authenticity in an industry that recognises fake over real. As a loyal friend betrayed by someone she loved and trusted. As a mother overwhelmed by the expectations of being a supermom. As a young wife fighting not to lose herself in marriage. As well as finding God for herself against the stereotypes that define God for us.

A mother's gritty yet often humorous account of bringing up her five children in a lion research camp; a 21st-century My Family and Other Animals with a dark side
'An astonishing story ... Nicholls carries us through her experiences with a searing honesty that for me was hugely educational and deeply moving' - Jeremy Irons

'An unflinchingly brave, generous book filled with the wisdom of one who has seen both the beauty and the darkness the world has to give' - Sophie Dahl

'Read the whole beautiful book to the end. You'll never see another memoir like this' - Richard Dawkins

'A wonderfully rich and honest memoir of an extraordinary life by an extraordinary person . . . a special book' - Tim Butcher

'UNDER THE CAMELTHORN TREE is remarkable, wild as a pride of lions - heartbreaking, relentlessly truthful, funny. Kate Nicholls steps into life's beauties and hardships with a rare and extraordinary courage' - Erica Wagner, Harper's Bazaar

'A breathtaking memoir written with an abundance of wit, honesty and love.' - Harry Michell

Kate Nicholls left England to raise her five children in Botswana: an experience that would change each of their lives. Living on a shoestring in a lion conservation camp, Kate home-schools her family while they also learn at first hand about the individual lives of wild lions. Their deep attachment to these magnificent animals is palpable.

The setting is exotic but it is also precarious. When the author is subjected to a brutal attack by three men, it threatens to destroy her and her family: post-traumatic stress turns a good mother into a woman who is fragmented and out of control.

In this powerfully written, raw and often warmly funny memoir, we witness the devastation of living with a mother whose resilience is almost broken, and how familial structures shift as the children mature and roles change. Under the CamelthornTree addresses head-on the many issues surrounding motherhood, education, independence, and the natural world; and highlights the long-lasting effect of gender violence on secondary victims. Above all, it is an inspiring account of family love, and a powerful beacon of hope for life after trauma

It was an upbringing in many ways normal. A loving home, shared with squabbling siblings, overseen by devoted parents. Yet in other ways it was the precise opposite: a revolving door of TV camera crews and documentary makers, a world of extreme discipline, of siblings vanishing in the night. Megan Phelps-Roper was raised in the Westboro Baptist Church - the fire-and-brimstone religious sect at once aggressively homophobic and anti-Semitic, rejoiceful for AIDS and natural disasters, and notorious for its picketing the funerals of American soldiers. From her first public protest, aged five, to her instrumental role in spreading the church's invective via social media, her formative years brought their difficulties. In November 2012, at the age of twenty-six, she left the church, her family, and her life behind.

What is it like to be a refugee? It is a question many of us do not give much thought, and yet there are more than 25 million refugees in the world. To be a refugee is to grapple with your place in society, attempting to reconcile the life you have known with a new, unfamiliar home. All this while bearing the burden of gratitude in your host nation: the expectation that you should be forever thankful for the space you have been allowed. Aged eight, Dina Nayeri fled Iran along with her mother and brother, and lived in the crumbling shell of an Italian hotel-turned-refugee camp. Eventually she was granted asylum in America. Now, Nayeri weaves together her own vivid story with those of other asylum seekers in recent years, bringing us inside their daily lives and taking us through the stages of their journeys, from escape to asylum to resettlement. In these pages, a couple fall in love over the phone, and women gather to prepare the noodles that remind them of home. A closeted queer man tries to make his case truthfully as he seeks asylum, and a translator attempts to help new arrivals present their stories to officials. With surprising and provocative questions, The Ungrateful Refugee recalibrates the conversation around the refugee experience. Here are the real human stories of what it is like to be forced to flee your home, and to journey across borders in the hope of starting afresh.

Watter soort mens was dr. H.F.

When, in the 1990s, Wilhelm Verwoerd openly spoke out against his grandfather's racist policies, he was ejected from the family. Working in Northern Island, making peace between former enemies, he feels the urge to return to his homeland, to make peace with his own family. This moving memoir examines the complexities of having Verwoerd blood in your veins whilst fully acknowledging that Verwoerd has blood on his hands.

Professor Christiaan Barnard was the brilliant and sometimes enigmatic surgeon who performed the first heart transplant 50 years ago. At times his actions seemed impulsive and illogical, yet he had an uncanny ability to weigh up risk and reward - and come up trumps all too often.

His ground-breaking relationship with a young, unemployed backyard mechanic changed not only the course of transplant surgery, but also the life of Winston Wicomb, the darker brother of the more famous Randall. While Randall easily passed as 'white', Winston's colour presented a huge threat to the family who lived in fear of the Apartheid inspectors. So severe and real was the danger of his racial background being exposed, that Winston had to spend a considerable part of his youth behind his mother's wardrobe whenever strangers called.

Vital Remains traces young Winston's early years against the backdrop of Apartheid, abuse and rejection. Yet, despite the disadvantages he had to face, he refused to accept a live of submission to an unjust policy. He managed to obtain a BSc, but remained unemployed. Then, one day, his luck changed and he embraced an opportunity that would change the history of transplant surgery.

Vital Remains is the story of one man's journey through the minefield of Apartheid's heyday. It tells the story of hope, perseverance, dedication and even love. The message Winston wants to convey to the youth of today is a simple one: seek, strive and never, never give up. Amos van der Merwe considers this book his best yet and managed to tell Winston's story with a healthy mix of fact, humour and gravity.
