Vogue's Best Books of the Year Sunday Times' Best Memoirs of the Year A New York Times Book of the Year New Yorker Book of the Year A frank, smart and captivating memoir by the daughter of Apple founder Steve Jobs. __________________________________________________ Born on a farm and named in a field by her parents - artist Chrisann Brennan and Steve Jobs - Lisa Brennan-Jobs's childhood unfolded in a rapidly changing Silicon Valley. When she was young, Lisa's father was a mythical figure who was rarely present in her life. As she grew older, her father took an interest in her, ushering her into a new world of mansions, holidays and private schools. His attention was thrilling, but he could also be cold, critical and unpredictable. When her relationship with her mother grew strained in high school, Lisa decided to move in with her father, hoping he'd become the parent she'd always wanted him to be. Small Fry is Lisa Brennan-Jobs's poignant story of a childhood spent between two imperfect but extraordinary homes. Scrappy, wise and funny, young Lisa is an unforgettable guide through her parents' fascinating and disparate worlds. Part portrait of a complex family, part love letter to California in the seventies and eighties, Small Fry is an enthralling book by an insightful new literary voice.

Why don't white people understand that Converse tekkies are not just cool but a political statement to people of colour? Why is it that South Africans of colour don't really 'write what we like'? What's the deal with people pretending to be 'woke'? Is Islam really as anti-feminist as is claimed? What does it feel like to be a brown woman in a white media corporation? And what life lessons can we learn from Bollywood movies?

In Sorry, Not Sorry, Haji Mohamed Dawjee explores the often maddening experience of moving through post-Apartheid South Africa as a woman of colour. In characteristically candid style, Dawjee pulls no punches when examining the social landscape: from arguing why she'd rather deal with an open racist than some liberal white people, to drawing on her own experience to convince readers that joining a cult is never a good idea.

In the provocative voice that has made Dawjee one of our country's most talked-about columnists, she offers observations laced throughout with an acerbic wit. Sorry, Not Sorry will make readers laugh, wince, nod, introspect and argue.

Steve Biko is often seen as the charismatic leader of the Black Consciousness Movement, who played a useful stopgap role in South African politics in the late 1960s and 1970s.

This biography of Biko shows, on the contrary, just how fundamental he was to the transformation of South Africa in the second half of the 20th century - and just how relevant he remains today.

Stoked! is an inspiring true story about courage, determination and the power of dreams. Chris Bertish was a skinny little kid from Cape Town when he started surfing with his brothers. Fiercely driven and constantly pushing his boundaries, Chris was not content with conquering 'ordinary' big waves. He wanted more: bigger waves, bigger swells, more adrenaline. What began as a personal quest to prove to himself that he was one of the best in the 'big-wave brotherhood' culminated a decade later with Chris being crowned South Africa's first Mavericks BigWave Champion. Competitors in the 2010 event were faced with the biggest and heaviest waves ever recorded in the history of the sport and Chris, on his own budget, on the back of a 40-hour plane journey and on borrowed equipment, outsmarted and outperformed the world's best-paid professional surfers. How did Chris achieve this feat? 'Nothing is impossible, unless you believe it to be' is just one of the philosophies he lives by. Out of his passion for big-wave surfing has grown a profound wisdom and an appreciation of a few simple truths, which he shares in Stoked!. With his infectious enthusiasm, Chris tells how he pulled off death-defying antics time and again, overcame overwhelming obstacles and fears, and parried every blow that fate dealt him, all without ever losing faith or focus on his dreams.

Wat gaan deur 'n koerantredakteur se kop as 'n woedende John Voster hom vroegoggend bel oor kritiese beriggewing? Of as 'n groep regse belhamels 'n politieke nuushond teer en veer?

When Bridget Hilton-Barber got on a train to Grahamstown in 1982 to study journalism at Rhodes University, she had no idea of the brutal drama that would unfold.

A rebellious young woman, she became politically involved in anti-apartheid organisations and was caught up in the massive resistance and repression sweeping the Eastern Cape at the time. She ended up spending three months in detention without trial, and after her release discovered she had been betrayed by one of her best friends, Olivia Forsyth, who was a spy for the South African security police.

Thirty years later, a horrific flashback triggers Bridget's journey back to the Eastern Cape to see if she can forgive her betrayer and finally let go of the extraordinary violence she encountered in the final days of apartheid. This is her powerful story.

duisterhede probeer opklaar rondom polities geïnspireerde moorde.

Prof. Denise Ackermann is deeply aware at all times not only of the historical, political, social and economic context of her theology but also of the personal and biographical circumstances and experiences that have shaped her thinking. From this perspective she writes about the questions that her experiences as a woman being diagnosed with cancer, and later with macula degeneration, raise and about her search for answers.
This book is at every point about Jesus. It is about her honest and personal experience and struggle with faith in Jesus. It is her “biography of faith” - faith in “the man on the borrowed donkey” as she calls him.
Her questions result in the ability to look at her life with the eyes of faith to see, above all else, a history of blessings - many blessings.
