A collection of essays by fifteen philosophers presenting a thoughtful, introductory guide to choosing a philosophy for living an examined and meaningful life. A VINTAGE ORIGINAL Socrates famously said 'the unexamined life is not worth living,' but what does it mean to truly live philosophically?
This thought-provoking, wide-ranging collection brings together essays by fifteen leading philosophers reflecting on what it means to live according to a philosophy of life. From Eastern philosophies (Daoism, Confucianism, and Buddhism) and classical Western philosophies (such as Aristotelianism and Stoicism), to the four major religions, as well as contemporary philosophies (such as existentialism and effective altruism), each contributor offers a lively, personal account of how they find meaning in the practice of their chosen philosophical tradition.

Together, the pieces in How to Live a Good Life provide not only a beginner's guide to choosing a life philosophy but also a timely portrait of what it means to live an examined life in the twenty-first century.

'Absorbing, mind-enlarging, studded with insights ... This could have significant real-world results' Sunday Times Humanity's greatest feat is our incredible ability to learn. Even in their first year, infants acquire language, visual and social knowledge at a rate that surpasses the best supercomputers. But how, exactly, do our brains learn? In How We Learn, leading neuroscientist Stanislas Dehaene delves into the psychological, neuronal, synaptic and molecular mechanisms of learning. Drawing on case studies of children who learned despite huge difficulty and trauma, he explains why youth is such a sensitive period, during which brain plasticity is maximal, but also assures us that our abilities continue into adulthood. We can all enhance our learning and memory at any age and 'learn to learn' by taking maximal advantage of the four pillars of the brain's learning algorithm: attention, active engagement, error feedback and consolidation. The human brain is an extraordinary machine. Its ability to process information and adapt to circumstances by reprogramming itself is unparalleled, and it remains the best source of inspiration for recent developments in artificial intelligence. How We Learn finds the boundary of computer science, neurobiology, cognitive psychology and education to explain how learning really works and how to make the best use of the brain's learning algorithms - and even improve them - in our schools and universities as well as in everyday life.

The field of human resource management (HRM) has grown significantly over the last 50 years. Although HRM is relatively new to the South African business environment, many companies started employing personnel managers (later to become known as HR managers) to head up personnel departments during the 1980s, primarily to help employers deal with the industrial action of trade unions. Their role has since expanded way beyond that. These days, HR managers play an important role in ensuring that companies utilise their human resources optimally. Introduction to human resource management provides a basic understanding of the principles of HRM and how it contributes to achieving organisational goals.

Introduction to human resource management examines the essential aspects of the practice of HRM in the modern workplace. Essential theory is supplemented with practical guidelines for managing employees as well as other general functions in an organisation.

Contents include the following:
• Macro-environmental factors
• Workforce planning and talent management
• Recruitment and selection
• Induction, orientation and onboarding
• Performance management and appraisal
• Human resource development
• Management, leadership and motivation
• Remuneration
• Employee wellness, health and safety
• Laws regulating the human resource management function

Introduction to Human Resource Management is aimed at undergraduate students at further and higher education institutions within
South Africa as well as managers and human resource practitioners.

The Sunday Times Top 10 Bestseller From the author of the phenomenal multi-million copy bestseller The Things You Can See Only When You Slow Down 'Hearing the words 'be good to yourself first, then to others' was like being struck by lightning.' Many of us respond to the pressures of life by turning inwards and ignoring problems, sometimes resulting in anxiety or depression. Others react by working harder at work, at school or at home, hoping that this will make ourselves and the people we love happier. But what if being yourself is enough? Just as we are advised on airplanes to take our own oxygen first before helping others, we must first be at peace with ourselves before we can be at peace with the world around us. In this beautiful follow-up to his international bestseller The Things You Can See Only When You Slow Down, Buddhist monk Haemin Sunim turns his trademark wisdom and kindness to self-care, arguing that only by accepting yourself - and the flaws which make you who you are - can you have compassionate and fulfilling relationships with your partner, family and friends. 'Even products labelled 'limited edition' are made on a production line with hundreds that are exactly the same. But there is only one you in the world.' *** 'Haemin writes beautifully and simply... these vital life lessons resonate deeply and easily' Miranda Hart 'The world could surely use a little more love, a little more compassion, and a little more wisdom. In Love for Imperfect Things, Haemin Sunim shows us how to cultivate all three, and to find beauty in the most imperfect of things-including your very own self' Susan Cain, New York Times bestselling author of Quiet 'Heartwarming, calming and simple. But also filled with wisdom and powerful truths that will teach us to love ourselves first in order to transform our relationships with our loved ones' Hector Garcia, author of IKIGAI - The Japanese secret to a long and happy life 'A wonderful book to accompany The Things You Can See... page by page, he shows you how to reclaim your freedom and your life' Professor Mark Williams, author of the bestselling Mindfulness 'A real treasure. It teaches us that compassion is at the heart of healing . . . starting with ourselves. I highly recommend this book' Christiane Northrup, MD, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Women's Bodies, Women's Wisdom 'You can be the most amazing human being in the world and everyone sees rays of light, love, and genius when they look at you, but if you yourself don't know it, all of that external admiration doesn't matter one bit. Haemin Sunim teaches you ways to love yourself first, instead of loving the idea of other people loving you. It makes a world of difference' Marc and Angel Chernoff, New York Times bestselling authors of Getting Back to Happy

Since 1994, there have been few attempts to address the theoretical and practical foundations of effective management in early childhood education (ECE) and the Foundation Phase in South African schools, yet the survival and success of ECE centres and schools depend on the ability of education managers to meet the needs of the children/learners, educators, parents and the community. Management in early childhood education provides a comprehensive overview of the management of ECE centres for children from birth to nine years old. This book is a resource and reference guide which includes amongst other Internet sources and templates such as inventories, financial planning, parents' newsletters and agendas of staff meetings. It focuses especially on the South African context by referring to appropriate examples and scenarios of real-life situations in this country as well as the newly introduced Curriculum Assessment Policy Statements (CAPS). It also offers practical applications for the many theoretical frameworks in South African schools. All the chapters in this third edition have been updated, and each one begins with learning outcomes and key terms. Management in early childhood education is aimed at student teachers, educators, administrators and child caregivers.

'Remarkable . . . grips with the force of a thriller' Robert Macfarlane 'The most brilliant and essential book on Chernobyl since that of Nobel Prize-winner Svetlana Alexievich' Irish Times ** National Book Critics Circle Finalist 2019 ** The official death toll of the 1986 Chernobyl accident, 'the worst nuclear disaster in history', is only 54, and stories today commonly suggest that nature is thriving there. Yet award-winning historian Kate Brown uncovers a much more disturbing story, one in which radioactive isotopes caused hundreds of thousands of casualties, and the magnitude of the disaster has been actively suppressed. For years after, Soviet scientists, bureaucrats and civilians were documenting staggering increases in birth defects, child mortality, cancers and other life-altering diseases. Worried that this evidence would blow the lid on the effects of radiation release from Cold War weapons-testing, scientists and diplomats from international organizations, including the UN, tried to bury or discredit it. Brown also encounters many everyday heroes, often women, who fought to bring attention to the ballooning human and ecological catastrophe, and adapt to life in a post-nuclear landscape, where the dangerous effects of radiation persist today. Based on a decade of archival and on-the-ground research, Manual for Survival is a gripping historical detective story that brings to light the real consequences of Chernobyl - and the plot to cover them up. 'A troubling book, passionately written and deeply researched' Sunday Times

What can one word do? If used correctly, it can make us laugh and make us cry. With Melusi's Everyday Zulu, Melusi Tshabalala has been demonstrating the power of a single word. Every single day (except Sundays), he posts a single Zulu word on his Facebook profile accompanied by a left-field explanation and examples of its use. His unique writing style, wonky sense of humour, frank political commentary and razor-sharp social observations give his readers a one-of-a-kind insight into not only isiZulu but the world Melusi inhabits, as a 21st century Zulu man.

Within a few short months, Melusi's Everyday Zulu has built up a huge following. His fans love him for his honesty and commitment to pointing out subtle and overt forms of prejudice and racism. He holds up a mirror that shows South African society in all its flaws but also its sheer humanity. He makes us laugh at ourselves and with each other.

#NOTSILENT Women, womyn & womxn: Are they really nasty? This collection contains humour and pathos; it is an easy read, despite being academically grounded and completely relevant. Wonderful doodles at the start of each essay soften the page. This is a want-to-read book on an extremely important topic. In South Africa the #Fallist movement became an extremely important platform to discuss gender, while #metoo has become a global phenomenon. Ashanti Kunene, a Fallist-leader, is one of the contributors. Other essays include “Pussies are not for grabbing” (Joy Watson), “My arms are tired of holding this sign” (Amanda Gouws), “Oh, no you can't go to heaven in a broke down car” (Anastasia Slamat), “I'm with her” (Zama Khanyile), “To Womb it may concern” (Christi van der Westhuizen), “Womb with a (very strong) view” (Helen Moffet) and “Diary of an Indian woman” (Aarti Narse); but there are many more - twenty eight in total. The idea for the collection was born, cradled and nurtured between friends who wanted to create a space for writing and thinking about the women's marches. The group of feminists who contributed to this collection used the marches and the posters inspired by the marches as a vehicle which galvanised women into action to put pen to paper and show fervour for ongoing feminist activism. The nexus of this beautifully written and evocatively illustrated collection is telling narratives that link very personal stories with deeply political issues. These are the stories told by nasty women who are making the personal political, who are seeking to live their lives in ways that resist and challenge patriarchy. Through their very intimate nature these are stories that speak to the creation of a different kind of social order, one based on equity, the promotion of human rights and social justice. The presidential campaign in the USA grabbed the global imagination. It also grabbed the feminist imagination, presenting the hope that if a woman could become the president of the USA, women throughout the world would finally break through the reinforced glass ceiling. However, when it didn't happen, the lost opportunity became the metaphorical kick in the feminist gut on a global scale. Through the subsequent misogyny, vulgarity, lewd comments, the pussy-grabbing video, and the threats of the erosion of feminist activism in the trenches, worldwide a deep mourning arose from the feminist community. It was the name calling of “nasty women” that really smarted. Initial feelings of anger gave rise to empowerment of women — those who talk back to patriarchy — to embrace the label of “nasty women”.
