“Wow, you don't look like a chef!” This statement is something Chef Lesego Semenya has heard many a time over the years. His response is always: “So, what does a chef look like?” With his bulging tattooed upper arms, soft-spoken nature and obvious passion for South African cuisine and giving it his unique twist, Lesego probably doesn't fit the generic look of a self-made top chef. It is his unconventional personality and approach to food that has kept South Africans coming back for more over the years. Having cooked for billionaires such as Richard Brandson, Bill Gates and Warren Buffet, starring on the judging panel of foodie programme Top Chef South Africa, being the resident chef for various newspapers and radio shows, and then building his successful culinary brand LesDaChef, he finally brings his foodie fans his first cookbook, Dijo - My Food Journey. Every dish that will be featured in Dijo has a story that speaks of passion and nostalgia. Sharing both the recipes and their history will give foodies a way of getting to know Lesego's food background while growing up in Soweto, as well as the fine-dining techniques he learned at chef school and a few hot chef secrets, too. Divided into three sections that span his food journey, Dijo is an affirmation of South African cuisine, its heritage and its unique flavours. Readers will go on a journey through the simplest yet most-loved of township dishes, to the more complex fine-dining molecular gastronomy creations he has become known for. It truly is a reflection of his life lived through food. Lesego is also very active on social media and has used this platform to not only build his brand, LesDaChef, but also to educate, inform and, sometimes, challenge his followers to learn and understand exactly what they're consuming - whether it be food or beverages.

Kan dit so ingewikkeld wees?

Haar leuse was: “My kind, kos is nie kwaad nie. Nooit nie. Kos vergewe en bring mense saam. As ons net aanhou kook, sal ons die wêreld een bord op 'n slag mooier maak.” Dié pragfotoboek vol onthou-resepte is 'n kosverhaal wat dít wat is, verbind met dít wat was.

This is Durban curry, continued... a show which has been running since the 1860s, when the first indentured labourers came from India to work in the sugar cane plantations of then colonial Natal. They brought spices, and seeds, and recipes. And when inevitably, the influences and memories of the mother cuisine faded, Durban curry became its own thing.

Recognisably different from its roots: redder, hotter. More tomatoes, more chillis. But growing in its new homeground as it pleased. Varying from cook to cook, chef to chef. That's what we documented in 2014 in Durban Curry, So Much of Flavour. Now, in 2019, we find it's changing again.

Not the classics. They are timeless. But Durban curry is not set in stone. The point about this community dish which has become a national treasure is, precisely and imprecisely, that it has always moved and mutated with the times. It continues, as it did right from the beginning, to respond to new circumstances and needs.

And the point about our first investigation into what made it distinctive is that it was “just a taste'. We wrote: “We know there is much more to tell, many more kitchens to visit, and dishes to discover.'

The results were less pain, less inflammation and a far better quality of life. In fact the only thing that changed was my diet, and this influenced my whole life.

Simple, tempting, eco-friendly recipes that support the environment and don't make you feel like you're missing out. If the way we eat globally continues, the world is at risk of failing to meet the UN Sustainable Development Goals and the Paris Agreement. From extreme weather patterns to wild fires raging in Australia, it's little wonder that more of us than ever are worried about the environmental impact of our food decisions. Enter award-winning recipe writer for Mail on Sunday's YOU magazine and registered nutritionist, Annie Bell. The easy, family-friendly recipes in Eat to Save the Planet follow recommendations from the Lancet-EAT commissioned Planetary Health Diet, written by an international group of scientists. This flexitarian reference diet is so simple, easily accessible and tempting that you will hardly believe you're helping to save the planet as you eat. The mainstays of the Planetary Health Diet are plant-based foods, but while these ingredients are central to its recommendations, the diet doesn't go as far as being vegetarian or vegan. So recipes in the book include modest quantities of seafood and poultry, with a small amount of red meat being optional - making this new approach to eating achievable and realistic for everyone. Whether it's Spinach, Nut and Goat's Cheese Pie, Aubergine Stuffed with Lamb and Buckwheat, or Speedy Cauliflower, Lentil and Watercress Risotto, these comforting, filling and delicious dishes will quickly become the day-to-day favourites in your kitchen.

There are few things that compare to an afternoon curled up with a good book. It is even better if it is followed by a great meal shared with good friends. And the cherry on the top is when, at the end of the gathering, you have a fresh stack of books next to your bed to thrill you for the coming month.

But probably the greatest scenario of all is when it was you who hosted book club and everything went smoothly: you did not kill yourself during the preparations for the evening and your guests liked your books and loved your food. I hope this book will help you towards that specific state of bliss.

The idea for this collection of recipes started with the premise that not all readers are necessarily confident cooks. Neither are some social people who want to invite a group of friends or family over for a catch-up or special celebration.

This book helps you prepare a great meal for your gathering with a bit of planning and without too much stress. For this reason the emphasis is on dishes that can be prepared and often completed before the guests arrive.
