The aim of this book is to provide a handy, easy-to-use guidebook for tour guides, tourists and students. The goal was to keep the book as 'travel friendly' as possible, ideal for game walks and an easy size to carry in a suitcase. A small pocket- sized book limits the amount of information and the size of the photographs, so a compromise was reached by limiting the number of pages to one page per animal.

The aim of this book is to provide a handy, easy- to-use guidebook for tour guides, tourists and students. My goal was to keep the book as 'travel friendly' as possible, ideal for game walks and an easy size to carry in a suitcase. A small pocket- sized book limits the amount of information and the size of the photographs, so a compromise was reached by limiting the number of pages to one page per animal.
There is at least one photograph of each animal, but often two (male and female). Photographs of the droppings and skull and a sketch of the spoor is provided for each animal. The droppings were photographed with a match for scale and the spoor is provided with measurements. The skulls were photographed at the Ditsong National Museum for Natural History, Pretoria. There is a brief explanation of the different skull components on pg 5 and 6.

Distribution maps for the Southern African sub-region accompany each animal. This will make the book useful in other areas as well.

The common names are provided in English, Afrikaans, German, French, Spanish and Italian with only a few exceptions. The basic information on weight, gestation, habitat, food, social structure, etc., is provided in a separate block for each animal. The dental formula is also included and the formula is explained on pg 5.

The 'Did you know?' section contains additional interesting facts about the animal.

The book is colour-coded for quick reference and the colour codes are indicated in the contents for cross reference. The book is divided into six major groups - the non-ruminants, the ruminants, the carnivores, the non-carnivorous small mammals, the rodents and shrews and lastly, the bats.

At the beginning of each section there is information about the group and a visual diagram of the orders, suborders, families and sub-families within the group.

Helena Kriel finds herself in deep personal crisis, where she's forced to ask herself: Where do I belong? After the writers' strike in LA renders her useless and her marriage falls apart, she travels back in Johannesburg. Little does she know that she'll find clarity in the African bush as she volunteers to work with baby rhinos, orphaned by poaching. Using the ancient technique of meditation, Helena finds she can access these broken beings, to connect through nature and find new homes.

Text in 4 Languages - English, Afrikaans, Xhosa, Zulu.

Frogs are appealing and colourful creatures. Children may be familiar with stages of the frog's curious life cycle, and see their eggs or tadpoles in local streams; and everyone has heard their calls. My first book of Southern African Frogs introduces 55 different types of frog and includes a CD of their calls. A short introduction outlines key features and includes an illustration detailing their life cycle.

For each species featured, the book provides:
- A short description in four languages, including key features and habits.
- A full-colour illustration of the frog and a visual size comparison with a human hand or matchstick.
- A distribution map, illustration of the type of eggs the frog lays and an indication of each frog's conservation status.
- An illustrated habitat bar with an arrow to indicate where each creature is found.

This simple and charming introduction to frogs will keep children happily absorbed for hours. The text in four languages expands the readership and promotes multilingualism.

Includes CD of frog calls

PVC omslag.

The name Ken Newman is synonymous with birds and birding, and 'Newman's birds by colour' remains a favourite among both younger birders and those starting out in the field.

Bold colour sections group the more commonly seen birds by the dominant colour of their plumage and other distinctive features, offering users a quick and easy way to identify them. A comprehensive introduction to birds and birding includes such topics as bird classification, anatomy, flight, migration, feeding and nesting. There are helpful sections offering information on what you need to go birding, and where and when to look for birds.

This third edition has been updated with the latest name changes as reflected in the commemorative edition of Newman's Birds of Southern Africa.

Sharks are among the most persecuted animals on Earth. Nicole's block-buster story lifts the lid on the shocking details of the trade in shark fins, and raises awareness of the plight of sharks in the 21st century.

In November 2003 a female Great White Shark was tagged near Dyer Island in South Africa. Her tag popped up in February 2004, just south of Western Australia. The shark, later to be named Nicole (after shark enthusiast Nicole Kidman), had swum an epic 11,000 km. Scientists were even more surprised when she was identified back in South Africa in August 2004 - she had covered 22,000 km in less than nine months, using pinpoint navigation both ways.

Since then, many Great Whites have been tagged and have shown a propensity for undertaking long migrations - but none has yet matched Nicole's amazing feat. This story incorporates a blend of science, actual events and real people, along with conjecture as to what might have happened on Nicole's momentous journey.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Richard Peirce is best known as a shark conservationist and is chairman of the Shark Conservation Society and the Shark Trust. He has authored several books, including The Poacher's Moon - an exposé of rhino-poaching. Richard and his wife Jacqui are confirmed nomads who spend half the year in South Africa; their love of wildlife takes them to the bush at every opportunity.

Following the success of the earlier Scatalog: Quick ID guide to southern African animal droppings, here's another quick and quirky identification guide, this time to tracks of the region's most commonly found mammals, but also includes tracks of reptiles, rodents, birds and insects.

A simple key on the inside front cover directs users to any of 11 categories, such as 'cloven hooves', 'paws' or 'tramline-like trails'. Nearly 100 animals or closely related groups of animals are depicted; for each, there is a silhouette of front and back feet and a colour photograph of the track; the average measurements for each track; a short description of the track; and information about the circumstances and likely habitat.

Concise and to-the-point, this pocket-sized reference will prove indispensable in the field, no matter the experience of the user.

The aggressive poaching of rhinos needs to be countered with equal aggression.
So argued Prince Bernhard of the Netherlands, the founder president of the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), at a 1987 meeting with John Hanks, conservation expert and WWF's head in Africa. The result was Operation Lock, a secret initiative funded by Prince Bernhard and staffed by former SAS operatives.
Operation Lock set up headquarters in Johannesburg and extended its reach into neighÂ-bouring states: Namibia, Zambia, Botswana, Swaziland and Mozambique. Its operatives planned to train game rangers, to pose as rhino horn traders in order to entrap buyers, and to expose the kingpins who were driving the trade. It was a controversial approach, all the more because it was working within apartheid South Africa in the late 1980s. When the existence of the project was finally leaked, WWF denied any involvement, and John Hanks took the fall.
In Operation Lock and the War on Rhino Poaching, John Hanks finally tells the story of these explosive events from 25 years ago. As a leading international authority on conservation, he also deals with the scourge of rhino poaching up to the present, and gives powerful and controversial criticism of some of the current policies to curb poaching.
