The renowned zoologist Fritz Eloff became interested in the Kalahari lion in 1958 when he first heard a lion roaring from the red dunes surrounding the camp. So impressive was the earth-trembling sound that he decided to devote his studies to these predators. This meant that he also had to become familiar with the Kalahari, its dust, its intense heat during the day and freezing cold nights, its vegetation, all the mammals and birds that form part of the lion's food chain as well as the other predators the lion has to compete with. This book is the result of 40 years of extensive research and numerous exciting adventures. Written in an accessible style, it imparts information about the physical characteristics of the Kalahari lion, its habitat, role in the ecosystem and interaction with humans. The book concludes with the stories of a number of legendary male and female lions, and the author's view on the survival of these magnificent animals in an ever changing environment.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Fritz Eloff was professor of Zoology at the University of Pretoria and was also well known in rugby circles. He regularly participated in radio programmes on nature, thus becoming known for his expertise throughout South Africa.

Predictability isn't a word you will find in any Bushveld dictionary, and the life of wildlife guardian Mario Cesare has been anything but. After years as warden of Olifants River Game Reserve, his feet are firmly planted in this magnificent slice of Big Five country to the west of the Kruger Park, where he has experienced a rich life packed full of incidents far from routine.
In Heart Of A Game Ranger, Cesare recounts some of these hair-raising, heart-breaking and heart-warming moments: a buffalo calf reunited with its pining mother, injured lions given second chances and rhinos lost, one by one, to poaching. Nestled among these tales, Cesare pays homage to the brave, dedicated and curious personalities engaged in a deadly combat on the most majestic of battlefields. Yet, while rhino poaching is by far the reserve's biggest problem, Cesare reveals how the daily struggles of a game ranger are so much broader - and the rewards, when they come, immense.

Heart Of A Game Ranger is a story of extremes, one of fierce loyalty and devastating betrayal where spectacular days that end in exhausted satisfaction and achievement are balanced by those that leave behind only despair and frustration. Seen through his eyes and spoken from the heart, Cesare tells a deeply personal story - not only of a life lived wild, but of the joy of Africa's incredible natural world.

Insectopedia uncovers the fascinating and infinitely varied world of insects. It explores their intriguing behaviour and biology - from mating and breeding, metamorphosis and movement to sight, smell, hearing and their adaptations to heat and cold.

A chapter on superorganisms probes the curious phenomenon of social communities among insects; another covers the critical role that these creatures play in maintaining the fragile balance of life on our planet.

The book concludes with a 60-page illustrated field guide, describing most insect orders and their main families.

Previously published as Insectlopedia of Southern Africa, this fully revised and redesigned edition includes up-to-date information throughout, an expanded ID section, and several hundred new photographs.

This practical guide to animal tracking is a one-of-its-kind manual, based on information developed with the help of southern Africa's few remaining traditional trackers and their centuries-old wisdom in the field. It presents the more concrete and obvious wildlife signs for some 160 animals and teams them with a host of seemingly unrelated details to give a comprehensive picture of recent - and not-so-recent - traffic through the bush. Simple, bulleted text guides readers through the key points and teaches the broad-based observational skills required to detect and interpret messages; multiple photographs, some annotated, along with accurate track drawings for all the animals, offer a clear visual guide too. Rich in detail, accurate, and with an instructive introduction, this guide to the region's animal tracks and signs is every tracker's go-to manual.

This book describes in fascinating detail the wildlife, wild places and wild personalities that occupied Angola's conservation landscape through four decades of war and a decade of peace. Intrigues, assassinations, corruption, greed and incompetence - during the colonial era, through the horrific war and most especially throughout the crony-capitalist kleptocracy of President Jose Eduardo dos Santos - have resulted in the extinction of most of its formerly abundant wildlife populations and the decay and erosion of a once endless Eden.

This is the first book to integrate the political, economic and environmental threads that account for the post-colonial tragedy of one of Africa's most biologically diverse countries. A corrupt government has robbed the country of its vast oil and diamond wealth, of its environmental health, of its morality and of its soul. It was not always so.

The author was appointed ecologist to Angola's National Parks in 1971. But the vast open spaces, peaceful stillness and tropical luxuriance that he found during the four years they spent exploring and developing the country's wildlife reserves was not to last. The powder keg of anger against centuries of colonial exploitation - of slavery, of forced labour and of an abusive system of penal settlement - could not be contained. Bloody nationalist uprisings led to the abandonment of Angola by Portugal and the transition from random guerrilla skirmishes with a colonial army into a brutal civil war that cost over one million lives. Despite its scarred history, the author believes the country can still rebuild its national parks and save much of its wildlife and wilderness. But this can only happen if the current ageing autocracy makes space for a new generation of Angolan conservationists.

Elephants are arguably Africa's most charismatic animals, and among the biggest drawcards to our game reserves. While the burgeoning game-park industry may be increasing our access to these magnificent creatures, rising human-elephant encounters are an inevitable outcome - sometimes, sadly, fatal. Such encounters could likely have been avoided had those involved understood elephant behaviour, and particularly how these intelligent animals interface with traffic through their territory.

This book describes elephant family life, from rearing of infants to establishing dominance within a herd; it unpacks regular elephant behaviour, the matriarchal system, the particular dangers of males in musth, and many other aspects of their lives. Most of all, it provides guidelines for ensuring safe and enjoyable encounters with these majestic animals.

This is an essential guide for those planning visits to reserves: aside from the interest factor, being able to read the tell-tale signs may just save lives.

Seabirds hold a special place in the hearts of birders, not least because of the challenge of getting to grips with a group of birds that is largely inaccessible, and living in an often hostile habitat. Guide to Seabirds of Southern Africa is the first book focusing exclusively on the nearly 1,000 birds that occur around the southern African coastline and adjacent Southern Ocean.

This book is primarily an identification guide, but the author also includes information about these birds' fascinating biology and behaviour. The text is richly supported with photographs, as well as distribution maps for all the birds. A detailed introduction covers, among other topics, seabird origins, havens, feeding, breeding and conservation, as well as how best to watch and photograph these enigmatic birds.

Guide to Seabirds of Southern Africa is an authoritative, first-of-its-kind, essential, volume for birders' libraries.

The aim of this book is to provide a handy, easy- to-use guidebook for tour guides, tourists and students. My goal was to keep the book as 'travel friendly' as possible, ideal for game walks and an easy size to carry in a suitcase. A small pocket- sized book limits the amount of information and the size of the photographs, so a compromise was reached by limiting the number of pages to one page per animal.
There is at least one photograph of each animal, but often two (male and female). Photographs of the droppings and skull and a sketch of the spoor is provided for each animal. The droppings were photographed with a match for scale and the spoor is provided with measurements. The skulls were photographed at the Ditsong National Museum for Natural History, Pretoria. There is a brief explanation of the different skull components on pg 5 and 6.

Distribution maps for the Southern African sub-region accompany each animal. This will make the book useful in other areas as well.

The common names are provided in English, Afrikaans, German, French, Spanish and Italian with only a few exceptions. The basic information on weight, gestation, habitat, food, social structure, etc., is provided in a separate block for each animal. The dental formula is also included and the formula is explained on pg 5.

The 'Did you know?' section contains additional interesting facts about the animal.

The book is colour-coded for quick reference and the colour codes are indicated in the contents for cross reference. The book is divided into six major groups - the non-ruminants, the ruminants, the carnivores, the non-carnivorous small mammals, the rodents and shrews and lastly, the bats.

At the beginning of each section there is information about the group and a visual diagram of the orders, suborders, families and sub-families within the group.
