Leif Ove Andsnes is one of the world's leading pianists, and winner of the BBC Music Magazine Award for Recording of the Year, 2015.

His new album is a personal selection of Jean Sibelius' unknown and remarkably beautiful piano gems.

Andsnes sees himself on a mission to present a neglected repertoire of the Finnish composer: “I'm really passionate about his piano music, which is so beautiful and haunting. How can there be a major composer out there with such accessible music that people don't know. The fact that many will be hearing it for the first time, that's a wonderful feeling.”

Avi Avital (Mandolin/Mandola), Omer Avital (Bass/Oud), Itamar Doari (Percussion), Yonathan Avishai (Piano/Keyboards), Uri Sharlin (Accordion)

“The music on the album is about this special bond between Omer and myself, between the history and cultural identity we share with each other. Here I might be said to hoist a flag and return to my roots. It's very intensive, extremely authentic, and it means a great deal to me.” Avi Avital

“Explosively charismatic” (New York Times) in live performance, Avital has been described as playing “with the freedom of rock or jazz musicians” (Boston Globe) even in Baroque repertoire.

Avital Meets Avital is Avi's first cross-genre album release. Following three core classical releases on DG, Avi now explores the sound of world music, incl. several world premiere recordings.

For his very personal project he teamed up with jazz bassist Omer Avital, with whom he shares much more than just a surname:

Both attended the same music academy in Jerusalem, where Omer studied jazz and Avi the classical tradition, and both were born and raised by Moroccan parents in Israel. Having grown up with this inner ambivalence, for a long time the two musicians focused on their Israeli homeland and Western musical culture, Avi Avital in classical music, Omer Avital in jazz.

Avital Meets Avital brings their different musical backgrounds and shared cultural heritage into dialogue, drawing on the diverse influences of Moroccan and North African sounds, classical and folk traditions, Israeli harmonies, and Mediterranean rhythms, to create a musical melting pot where chamber music meets the raw energy of jazz.

All pieces are composed and arranged by Omer and Avi Avital, apart from the album's final track.

Tracks

1. Omer Avital: Zamzama
2. Omer Avital: Lonely Girl
3. Omer Avital: Ana Maghrebi
4. Avital: Avi's Song
5. Omer Avital: Ballad For Eli
6. Avital: Prelude
7. Omer Avital: Maroc
8. Omer Avital: Hijazain

The South African-born pianist Renée Reznek is releasing her recording of new South African piano music on the Prima Facie label. Many of these pieces have been composed for Renée who specialises in twentieth century and new music. With the exception of Peter Klatzow's Barcarolle, these works are recorded here for the first time.

Speaking of the CD, Renée Reznek said: 'Recording this CD has given me a wonderful way to reconnect with the country I grew up in. I am so grateful to these distinguished composers for their fantastic music which reflects the rich, diverse culture of South Africa. 'The majority of the pieces on the CD combine traditional South African music with contemporary Western European techniques. This is true of PMB Impromptu, composed for Renée by internationally renowned composer Kevin Volans who like Renée grew up in Pietermaritzburg or PMB. Both Michael Blake's Broken Line , composed for Renée, and Robert Fokkens' Five Miniatures were inspired by Xhosa bow music. Similarly Hendrik Hofmeyr's Partita Africana and David Kosviner's Mbira Melody, also written for Renée, are sourced from local music traditions. Neo Muyanga's Hade Tata, a tribute to Nelson Mandela, celebrates the 20th anniversary of the first democratic elections in SA. Muyanga combines Nguni melodies with township jazz and struggle songs. Other pieces by David Earl and Peter Klatzow show a more European influence.

Fokkens, Robert

Four years after his fascinating and highly praised album with works of the Spanish composer Mompou, Arcadi Volodos went into the Berlin Teldex Studio again to deliver another reference recording, this time with the music of Johannes Brahms. Volodos has played the Brahms solo pieces over the past years in places all over the world and received highest critical acclaim for his interpretation. The Brahms solo works are perfect to show Volodos unique ability to create a special and magic sound, a sound “which lifts us, the listener, into the air and which makes us believe that the world is floating' (Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung). Recorded in the famous Teldex Studios Berlin in three sessions (2015 - 2017) on a great Steinway Grand Piano specially tuned by Michel Brandjes, one of the best tuners in the world. There is no editing in this recording. Volodos played every piece over and over again to develop his idea of structure and sound and chose the best version of each piece after the end of the recording.

Universally considered as one of the greatest violinists of our time, Anne-Sophie Mutter's stunning and multi-faceted music-making extends across masterworks from the full breadth of the violin repertoire.

Mutterissimo - The Art of Anne-Sophie Mutter is a selection of highlights from her discography, personally picked by Mutter herself, bringing together recordings that date for the most part from the last twenty years. It invites listeners to undertake two tours of Anne-Sophie Mutter's multiple worlds of music:

The first explores the highways and byways of the core repertory and features well-known works for violin and orchestra by Dvořák and Schumann alongside less familiar pieces. The second one, often with Mutter's long-standing piano partner, Lambert Orkis, combines virtuosity and light-heartedness; the popular and the surprising; and emotion and rhythmic energy.

For many years Anne-Sophie Mutter has performed not only in major international concert halls but recently also in clubs, where a young audience, largely unconcerned with traditional rituals, reacts to the music much more spontaneously. It is only logical, therefore, that she increasingly uses social media to engage in a dialogue with her fans.

Joseph Haydn claimed to have discovered the string quartet form by accident. His Op.1 no.1 has the cheerful five-movement form of a Divertimento, while the glorious and harmonically daring Op.77 no.1 was among the last he completed in the genre. Falling between the two, Op.33 no.5 is full of rhythmic surprises and a theme that gives it the nickname, 'How do you do?'

Today, the Goldmund Quartet is considered one of the most exciting young string quartets in Europe. Since their début at Munich's Prinzregententheater, the quartet has appeared at international festivals such as the Festival Aix-en-Provence, Festival de Música y Danza Granada, Ludwigsburger Schlossfestspiele and Heidelberger Frühling. The quartet has been awarded several prizes, including a Yehudi Menuhin Live Music Now scholarship, and recently a scholarship from the Deutscher Musikwettbewerb as well as the 2015 Bavarian Young Artist Award. Concert recordings have been made by the Bavarian Radio, ARD, Deutschlandradio and Einsfestival.

Daniil Trifonov has been described by The Times as 'the finest young pianist of our age'.

After his successful 'Rachmaninov Variations' last year, he has now created another statement to define his extraordinary and growing legacy. It is dedicated to the greatest pianist of his own century: Franz Liszt.

The repertoire is Liszt's Complete Concert Etudes. These Etudes remain amongst the most challenging piano pieces ever composed - and are rarely recorded or performed. This is the first time that the Complete Liszt Etudes have been recorded as a whole for DG. And Daniil Trifonov is one of the few pianists to have recorded them all in one go - in an unbelievable five days.

Beyond his phenomenal technique, Daniil Trifonov is a distinctly Russian artist: an intense, soulful musician in the great Russian tradition whose presentation and repertoire set him apart from all other young piano stars of today.

Lucas Debargue, the most talked about pianist at the 2015 Tchaikovsky Piano Competition, releases his first studio album BACH, BEETHOVEN, MEDTNER. Nikolai Medtner is a Russian composer, contemporary of Rachmaninov & Scriabin with German roots and influences. Debargue performed Medtner's melodious sonata to spectacular success at the 2015 Tchaikovsky Competition with applause that lasted over fifteen minutes. Besides Bach's melancholic Toccata C minor BWV 911, Debargue is keen to engage in forgotten works as with Medtner and further puts a spotlight on the Sonata No. 7 in D major by Beethoven, which remained in the shadow of the famous Pathétique. Debargue only started professional training aged 20 but won the Tchaikovsky Piano Competition's 4th prize only four years later, being described by media as the “real winner” due to his unusual background and magnificent playing.

Grigory Sokolov has gained an almost mythical status amongst music-lovers and pianophiles throughout the world. He is considered by many today to be the world's greatest living pianist. Ever since his first recital in Leningrad. He has amazed everyone again and again with the enormous breadth of his repertoire and his huge, almost physical musical strength. Grigory Sokolov was largely unknown in the West, however, until the late 1980's, but is now rightfully regarded as a giant of the piano. Sokolov's concerts are anticipated with eagerness where ever he travels. He's not been outside of Europe for several years now, preferring to tour Europe. His programmes change twice a year, Sokolov mining the music he plays for every jewel before he feels ready to consider a new work. Sokolov prefers his CD's to be recorded live is not surprising, since he likes to capture the sacred moments of a real, live concert and avoid the sterile atmosphere of a studio. Ludwig van Beethoven's Piano Sonata No. 29 in B-flat major, Op. 106 (known as the Große Sonate für das Hammerklavier, or more simply as the Hammerklavier) is a piano sonata widely viewed as one of the most important works of the composer's third period and among the greatest piano sonatas. Completed in 1818, it is often considered to be Beethoven's most technically challenging piano composition and one of the most demanding solo works in the classical piano repertoire.
