There has never been a better opportunity to master textures. Knowing how to make your surfaces and textures look real is one of the most challenging aspects of creating art in colored pencil, even for experienced artists. 101 Textures in Colored Pencil provides artists with step-by-step instructions for drawing a wide variety of the most common textures and surfaces, including sand, water, metals, foliage, wood, fabrics, stone, grass, hair, and many more.
To get you started, this comprehensive guide opens with a review of tools and materials as well as basic skills, such as strokes, effects, and color mixing. Each page of instruction is a comprehensive resource on how to create a specific texture, complete with two to three easy-to-follow steps and a final, detailed image of the finished artwork. Plus, the book is organized into sections based on subject matter, so you can easily find the specific texture you're looking for. An artist's gallery in the back of the book provides examples of the textures in completed works of art.

Giraffe stretch out their necks and bat-eared foxes curl their tails to make handles for jugs, vases and tureens. Inquisitive monkeys peer over the edge of a planter, teasing the leopards below them. Magical creatures wear cloaks of flowers, spots and stripes. A turbaned Zulu figure sits astride a hippo ...

Colourful, imaginative, vibrant, delicate and dramatic - these are just some of the hallmarks of the artworks that have garnered international accolades for Ardmore Ceramic Art in rural KwaZulu-Natal. It is here, in South Africa's most successful ceramics studio set in the verdant Midlands, that exquisitely handcrafted and highly detailed figurative works and functional ware are created by more than fifty artists who draw on Zulu traditions and folklore, history, the natural world, and their own lives for inspiration.

The Blinded City recounts the history of inner-city Johannesburg from 2010 to 2019, primarily from the perspectives of the unlawful occupiers of spaces known as hijacked buildings, bad buildings or dark buildings. Tens of thousands of residents, both South African and foreign national, live in these buildings in dire conditions. This book tells the story of these sites and the court cases around them, which strike at the centre of who has the right to occupy the city. In February 2010, while Johannesburg prepared for the FIFA World Cup, the South Gauteng High Court ordered the eviction of the unlawful occupiers of an abandoned carpet factory on Saratoga Avenue and that the city's Metropolitan Municipality provide temporary emergency accommodation for the evicted. The case, which became known as Blue Moonlight and went to the Constitutional Court, catalysed a decade of struggles over housing and eviction in Johannesburg.

The distinctive historical architecture of the southwestern Cape, generally known as 'Cape Dutch', features ornate gables, thatched roofs and whitewashed walls. These buildings, frequently set in surroundings that enhance their dignity and aesthetic appeal, form part of a cultural heritage that is inextricably linked with the history of South Africa. A thoroughly researched and informative text describes the physical features of individual buildings, as well as their histories and those of their owners. Eleven regions within the southwestern Cape are covered, from central Cape Town to the West Coast, and including the towns of Stellenbosch, Paarl and Worcester. While each house is illustrated with at least one full-colour photograph, certain subjects, such as the Castle in Cape Town, Stellenbosch's Village Museum complex and the Mamre Mission, are dealt with at length. Particularly characteristic areas, like the Bo-Kaap in Cape Town, or the Bottelary region near Stellenbosch, are also given special treatment.
