As a teenager Fred Khumalo greeted his friends with a handshake and the words 'touch my blood'. It implied friendship and trust. The saying became his name. More than that, it became the way he viewed his world.

Everything touched Fred Khumalo. Twice he was bewitched. Twice his father - the 'moegoe', the 'country bumpkin' - took him to inyangas to have the 'demons' banished. Twice his mother - the 'city girl' - took him to a doctor to have the 'fevers' cured.

When the American Dudes became the fashion, Khumalo dressed up in outlandish style and strutted the streets. 'You had to be brave to be seen in the outfits that we wore. Green, yellow, maroon, powder blue. Outrageous stuff, garish stuff, bright stuff. Earth, Wind and Fire stuff. Michael Jackson (pre-nose job) stuff.

He smoked dagga with con men and criminals, he pickpocketed 'corpses' on the Friday night trains. He worked as a gardener in the larney suburbs and drooled over pornographic photographs with his baas's son. He studied journalism and shacked up with whiteys in a commune called the Snake Park, for a while the only darkie in a crazy swirl of booze and drugs and sex.

And then the bloody fighting that tore apart KwaZulu/Natal in the 1980s touched his life. Sucked him into a place of horror and violence that threatened to destroy him. When a friend died in his arms with the words 'They really got me, Touch My Blood. They really got me,' Khumalo realised that if he was to outlive the madness he had to run.

From the journalist and Sunday Times columnist comes a startlingly honest, humorous and poignant autobiography about growing up in a time of laughter and heartache. Fred Khumalo was Insight & Opinion Editor at the Sunday Times , where he also wrote a weekly socio-political column. He has published numerous short stories in literary journals and magazines, including Staffrider , Tribute , Drum and Pace . This was his first book. He is married and lives in Johannesburg.

In this publication, two separate texts that should be read alongside the authoritative Marais biography, Die groot verlange, is made available in a single volume. Eugene Marais and the Darwin Syndrome explores the role that the father-son relationship possibly could have played in Marais's inability to complete his magnum opus. Die dowwe spoor van Eugene Marais, an informal source book, includes facts and names that were concealed or suppressed in the biography.

Watter soort mens was dr. H.F.

At the age of twelve I already had a criminal record, busted by the drug squad for possession of an illegal substance. You'd think I'd have learnt a lesson, wouldn't you, but I'm still learning, even though I've been clean of street drugs for a lot of years now. The hardest lesson of all for an addict is that the nightmare is never over and the powerful seduction of just one more high never ever goes away. The story in these pages is not a comfortable one. It doesn't have an ending and I'm not even sure if it has a true beginning. Some of the time it may read like a bad dream. It isn't. It's my life you're holding in your hands. Don't let it be yours.

A re-release of this popular book with a new up-to-date cover. Mahlangeni is one of the most remote ranger stations in the Kruger National Park. Far from everywhere, this isolated corner of the wilderness was home for eleven years to Kobie Krüger, wife of the ranger in charge of the station, and their three daughters.Running a household and raising a family in a place where leopards, elephants, snakes and the like are your only neighbours, where you have no telephone, and where a trip to town means first crossing a river full of hippos and crocodiles, is hardly a straightforward business.

Hell, the first volume in Jeffrey Archer's The Prison Diaries, is the author's daily record of the time he spent there. The sun is shining through the bars of my window on what must be a glorious summer day. I've been incarcerated in a cell five paces by three for twelve and a half hours, and will not be let out again until midday; eighteen and a half hours of solitary confinement. There is a child of seventeen in the cell below me who has been charged with shoplifting - his first offence, not even convicted - and he is being locked up for eighteen and a half hours, unable to speak to anyone. This is Great Britain in the twenty-first century, not Turkey, not Nigeria, not Kosovo, but Britain. On Thursday 19 July 2001, after a perjury trial lasting seven weeks, Jeffrey Archer was sentenced to four years in jail. He was to spend the first twenty-two days and fourteen hours in HMP Belmarsh, a double A-Category high-security prison in South London, which houses some of Britain's most violent criminals. This is his illuminating insight into prison life.

Down second avenue is Es'kia Mphahlele's autobiography of his South African childhood and his struggle against discrimination. The memoir tells of Es'kia's childhood in Maupaneng, a small village outside Pietersburg, and Marabastad, a location in Pretoria. Here he showed academic promise. This resulted in a career as a teacher. After a number of years, though, he was barred from teaching because of his vocal opposition to the segregation and discrimination occurring in schools. Mphahlele then worked for Drum magazine in various capacities. The biography culminates in his exile from South Africa in 1957. Down second avenue is Mphahlele's personal account of his struggle for identity and dignity in the face of the growing discriminatory policies of the South African government. It is a compelling mix of humour and pathos.

Ahmed Kathrada's autobiography is a moving, touching and often amusing read about a man who not only observed, but also actively participated in the shaping of a country's history.

Born a shopkeeper's son in the rural town of Schweizer-Reneke, he became the trusted confidante of some of the most prominent political figures in South Africa's struggle history, among them Nelson Mandela and Walter Sisulu. Politically active at the age of 10, and joining the Young Communists' League at 14, Kathrada - or 'Kathy', as friends and family affectionately called him - devoted his life to the freedom struggle in South Africa.

Persecuted, driven underground and sentenced to life imprisonment at the Rivonia Trial, Kathrada spent 18 years on Robben Island, where he grew close to both Mandela and Sisulu, whom he regarded as a second father.

On the island, in his tiny garden patch, Kathrada buried the original draft of Mandela's autobiography, until such time it could be smuggled to London. Having lived side by side with men who shaped the history of this country and assumed positions of power, Kathrada himself remained humble.

Eventually released from prison after 26 years, he eschewed a cabinet post, instead opting to oversee the Robben Island Museum project.

In this title, truly a collection of memoirs, he affords us rare glimpses into his and other activists' lives during the struggle and imprisonment, and sketches poignant cameos of those who would become South Africa's post-apartheid leaders.

The final volume of Jeffrey Archer's prison diaries covers the period of his transfer from Wayland to his eventual release on parole in July 2003. It includes a shocking account of the traumatic time he spent in the notorious Lincoln jail and the events that led to his incarceration there - it also throws light on a system that is close to breaking point. Told with humour, compassion and honesty, it closes with a thought-provoking manifesto that should be applauded by the Establishment and prison population alike.

Nat Nakasa wrote once - 'I may shut up for some time because of fear. Yet even this will not make me feel ashamed. For I know that as long as the ideas remain unchanged within me, there will always be the possibility that, one day, I shall burst out and say everything that I wish to say - in a loud and thunderous voice.' In this collection of some of the finest writings by Nat Nakasa, that loud and thunderous voice speaks with such clarity and insight as to create a book that has been read and reread since its first appearance in 1975.
