Emergency management of acute poisoning is an emergency medicine short course that equips emergency personnel to assess acutely poisoned patients rapidly and accurately. This title is also valuable to nursing staff, senior pre-hospital health professionals and general practitioners. It provides a framework within which emergency personnel can safely work without being swamped by unnecessary details. The more commonly encountered cases of poisoning are discussed with guidelines for appropriate 'syndrome based' management of unknown toxicity while further investigations are being conducted.

or almost a hundred years from the 1860s, the City of London's overseas banks financed the global trade that lay at the core of the British Empire. Foremost among them from the beginning were two start-up ventures: the Standard Bank of South Africa, which soon developed a powerful domestic franchise at the Cape, and the Chartered Bank of India, Australia and China. This book traces their stories in the nineteenth century, their glory days before 1914 - and their remarkable survival in the face of global wars and the collapse of world trade in the first half of the twentieth century. The unravelling of the Empire after 1945 eventually forced Britain's overseas banks to confront a different future. The Standard and the Chartered, alarmed at the expansion of American banking, determined in 1969 on a merger as a way of sustaining the best of the City's overseas traditions. But from the start, Standard Chartered had to grapple with the fading fortunes of its own inherited franchise - badly dented in both Asia and Africa - and with radical changes in the nature of banking. Its British managers, steeped in the past, proved ill-suited to the challenge. By the late 1980s, efforts to expand in Europe and the USA had brought the merged Group to the brink of collapse. Yet it survived - and then pulled off a dramatic recovery. Standard Chartered realigned itself, just in time, with the phenomenal growth of Asia's 'emerging markets', many of them in countries where the Chartered had flourished a century earlier. In the process, the Group was transformed. Trebling its workforce, it brushed aside the global financial crisis of 2008 and by 2012 could look back on a decade of astonishing growth. Recent times have added an eventful postscript to a long and absorbing history. Crossing Continents recounts Standard Chartered's story with a wealth of detail from one of the richest archives available to any commercial bank. The book also affords a rare and compelling perspective on the evolution of international trade and finance, showing how Britain's commercial influence has actually worked in practice around the world over one hundred and fifty years.

Lloyd's of London aptly refers to insurance as 'the protection of the few, by the many', with its purpose being to restore the insured to the position that existed immediately prior to the incident that led to a loss, damage or liability. Insurance uses the pooling concept to provide cover against financial losses by collecting premiums, investing some of the funds and using the pool of money to pay out claims, simultaneously covering operating expenses and ensuring sustainability by creating reserves and adding value to the insurance company. Fundamentals of insurance is a concise yet comprehensive introduction to insurance, specifically for South African circumstances. Fundamentals of insurance highlight the need for commercial and personal insurance by explaining the financial objectives of firms and individuals, the role of financial statements and financial analysis, the valuation of assets and how risk management and insurance are related. It details how insurance business needs to be conducted, the procedures for handling claims, as well as the fundamental aspects of personal and commercial insurance. It provides a comprehensive framework and guidelines, with self-assessment questions at the end of each chapter, and prepares aspiring insurers for the entry-level of the insurance industry. Fundamentals of insurance is aimed at insurance students as well as organisations and institutions in the insurance field. Johan Marx is the director of the School of Management Sciences at the University of South Africa (Unisa). He holds a DCom (Business Management) and has been in academia since 1987. He was a trade and industry advisor at DTI from 1984-1987, and chair of the Department of Finance, Risk Management and Banking from 2007-2012. His research interests are currently in risk management and insurance. Frank van der Meer is a chartered insurance practitioner (FCII) and a fellow of the Insurance Institute of South Africa (FIISA). He has been in the insurance industry since 1966 and was the director of education of the Insurance Institute of South Africa from 1991-2003. He managed several insurance courses at the Unisa Centre for Business Management from 2006-2014. He remains actively involved in insurance education and training and is passionate about professionalism in the industry.

Organisational change: Theory and practice is based on the premise that a deeper understanding of the change phenomenon and its consequences forms the basis for constructively acting on and managing change in organisations. The title recognises that change at the individual level is inextricable from change at the organisational level. As a result, the application of change concepts and theory consistently relates to both the individual and the organisation.

Entrepreneurs are the core and essence of any economy. Without entrepreneurs, there would be no business and without business, there would be no government, as there would be nobody to pay taxes to finance it. What distinguishes entrepreneurs from the masses, and even from innovative individuals, is that they act on opportunities and create something new, thereby driving economic evolution.

Entrepreneurship - a South African perspective is a guide to becoming a successful entrepreneur. Entrepreneurship - a South African perspective describes and illustrates new venture creation within a South African context: the start-up process, the growth stages and the challenges in the maturity phase of the business. In this fourth edition, all the chapters have been updated and some chapters, including those on international business opportunities and legal aspects, have been substantially revised. Exercises, activities and numerous case studies based on the latest research in South Africa are included.
Entrepreneurship is aimed at undergraduate students at all higher education institutions in South Africa as well as entrepreneurs, managers, management consultants and trainees, developers and presenters of in-house business courses.

There is a growing awareness in the global business environment of the importance of managing the supply side, also referred to as the input side, of an organisation or supply chain as a strategically important area. South African managers are certainly also aware of the potential of the supply side to contribute to strategic competitive advantage in an increasingly difficult and competitive business environment. This seventh edition of Purchasing and supply management provides contemporary insights into this dynamic field. Purchasing and supply management introduces current concepts and management tools to make purchasing and supply management more efficient in functioning within the broader concept of supply chain management. e-Commerce is a broad term that covers all business activities that use the internet as the platform for conducting exchanges or forming and maintaining relationships. It encompasses social media, the sharing economy, mobile applications, e-tailing, the changes to business models and developments such as wearables, and is a rapidly growing component of business education. The separation between real and virtual worlds is becoming more intangible as we rapidly face a new world of integrated technology. e-Commerce provides a solid grounding in this dynamic discipline as well as tools and techniques to leverage for e-commerce business success. e-Commerce is written from the perspective of a developing country and makes use of many South African examples. It uncovers the main business drivers that practitioners need to be aware of in this rapidly developing field, from an overview of the e-commerce environment and the digital business models and strategies that have emerged from it to an in-depth look at the strategic drivers for digital and social marketing, operations and emerging trends in the digital future. e-Commerce is aimed at students who already have an understanding of general business theory, specifically basic concepts in economics, marketing and management.

Despite best intentions, the reality is that 'development' is still conceptualised, planned and 'delivered' by change agents and their institutions in a top-down manner. This is problematic for both the beneficiaries and government change agents as it amplifies rather than lessens service delivery challenges and does not lead to a grassroots planning partnership. Development, change and the change agent - facilitation at grassroots contextualises the change agent through his or her relationship with the local beneficiaries of development. This updated second edition, previously titled The development change agent - a micro-level approach to development, consists of thirteen chapters contributed by seventeen authors representing nine universities. The key theme is the challenge to establish authentic and empowering participation and the importance of change agent and local development beneficiary engagement and partnerships in achieving this. It covers an interdisciplinary field of development-related foci using a holistic, people-centred approach which includes grassroots facilitation, capacity building, empowerment and participation, developmental local government and good governance, and national development planning. It also incorporates social capital, indigenous knowledge systems, action research methodology and project management. Scholars, development practitioners, development consultants, those working for NGOs and CBOs, development corporations/agencies, and politicians and government officials, specifically local ones, will find the publication relevant in confronting contemporary developmental challenges. Francois Theron is a senior lecturer at the School of Public Leadership at Stellenbosch University. Trained in anthropology and development studies, he fully supports interdisciplinary research. In 2014, he co-edited Development, the State and Civil Society in South Africa (Van Schaik Publishers) with Ismail Davids. Ntuthuko Mchunu is a project manager for community-based tourism development at the City of Cape Town municipality. In addition to his public and development management qualifications at Stellenbosch University, he has extensive practical experience in the local government sphere as a change agent. Theron and Mchunu have partnered in numerous previous projects, leading to this 2016 publication.

The global market of today is characterised by fierce competition which has heightened customer expectations and forced business enterprises to invest in, and focus attention on, their supply chains. This, together with continuing advances in information and communication technology, has motivated the continuous evolution of the supply chain and of the techniques to manage it effectively. In South Africa, the public sector is confronted with supply chain skill and capacity shortages. Hence there is a need for continuous learning and development of supply chain staff to maintain a feasible fit between government institutions' objectives, skills and resources and a changing procurement environment. Public procurement and supply chain management will help to accelerate much-needed transformation in the public sector in this regard. Public procurement and supply chain management provides new ideas, concepts, case studies and practical experiences regarding public sector supply chains. Public procurement and supply chain management will serve as a valuable resource for public procurement learners, government officials, academics, researchers, consultants, students and other concerned parties with interest in public procurement and supply chain management.
