A selection of Richard Strauss's most-loved lieder and songs, and Elisabeth's arias from Wagner's Tannhäuser, the role in which Lise Davidsen will make her debut at Bayreuth Festival. Plus Ariadne's aria from Strauss's Ariadne auf Naxos: her 2017 Glyndebourne debut in the title role was named “one of those 'I was there' moments” (The Times).

Also includes Strauss's iconic Four Last Songs, originally premiered by Decca's Kirsten Flagstad. Recorded with the Philharmonia Orchestra, who performed the premiere of the Four Last Songs, and Finnish conductor Esa-Pekka Salonen.

Lise Davidsen is the first Scandinavian soprano to sign to Decca since Birgit Nilsson, and the first Norwegian singer to join Decca since Kirsten Flagstad's acclaimed recordings in 1950s. She is winner of The World Opera Competition, Plácido Domingo's Operalia (2015), winner of The Queen Sonja International Music Competition (2015), and Gramophone Young Artist of the Year (2018).

2-CD digipack celebrating René Kollo's 80th birthday, a tribute to this multi-faceted artist and lively entertainer whose career spanned over four decades. The collection spans the wide range of his repertoire: on the one hand legendary Heldentenor roles with conductors such as Bernstein, Kleiber and Solti, on the other, operettas, folksongs and Weill's “Threepenny Opera.” Also included is one of Kollo's big early successes as a pop singer: his charming 1961 German-language version of the international hit “Mary Lou.”.

One of the most beloved and acclaimed Wagner tenors of the 20th century, his first Tannhäuser was recorded with Georg Solti as early as 1970. Following his Lohengrin triumph at Bayreuth, Herbert von Karajan invited him to perform at the Salzburg Easter Festival in a production of Die Meistersinger with the Berliner Philharmoniker. A studio recording with the Dresden Staatskapelle followed as did international débuts in quick succession: Vienna, Chicago, New York, London. And of course, Kollo was de rigueur in Bayreuth's “Centennial Ring” conducted by Pierre Boulez.

His vast operatic repertoire encompassed Tamino to Florestan, Don José and Otello to Benjamin Britten's Peter Grimes. In his stunning live performances Kollo identified completely with his roles and brought impressive character studies whether as Tannhäuser or Tristan, Herodes in Salome or Macheath in The Threepenny Opera.

Last year's “Tristan Und Isolde” was the successful first installment of an exclusive, multiyear partnership between Deutsche Grammophon and the Bayreuth Festival, in which the Yellow Label became the exclusive audiovisual partner of the mythical Wagner festival, releasing each edition's new production on DVD/Blu-ray (see press release attached)

This year, we are proud to release on DVD/Blu-ray the celebrated production of “Parsifal” which was premiered on 25 July 2016, directed by Uwe Eric Laufenberg and conducted by Hartmut Haenchen

Hartmut Haenchen in his belated Bayreuth debut conducts from his own edition of the score

With Klaus Florian Vogt “as a powerfully heroic Parsifal (…), the beautiful gold, silver piercing iron of Elena Pankratova's voice as Kundry” (…), Georg Zeppenfeld as a slim Gurnemanz providing unparalleled vocal command (...) and Ryan McKinny as a noble and agonised Amfortas.” (Telegraph)

An operatic dream came true in May 2016, when two singers made their role debuts as Lohengrin and Elsa at the Dresden State Opera.

Previously at home in French and Italian lyric tenor roles, Piotr Beczala was expanding his repertory in a direction that many opera fans had long wanted him to explore, while Anna Netrebko - previously hailed as the “queen of bel canto” - was undertaking her first Wagnerian role. It was also her first foray into the lyric-dramatic repertory.

Both singers had been persuaded to take on their new roles by the Dresden Staatskapelle's principal conductor, Christian Thielemann, one of the leading Wagner conductors of our day.

Seldom has the world of opera been as excited as it was by these performances, public and press revealing a rare unanimity in hailing them as outstanding. Die Presse spoke of a “starry occasion”, while Die Welt described it as “musically one of the finest Lohengrins of all time - a Lohen-Dream”. This punning was evidently catching, for the Münchner Merkur attempted a conflation of the German terms for swan (Schwan) and madness (Wahnsinn) and produced the portmanteau word Schwahnsinn. A substantial part in the production's success was played by Georg Zeppenfeld as King Henry, Evelyn Herlitzius as Ortrud, Tomasz Konieczny as Telramund, Derek Welton as the Herald and the Dresden State Opera Chorus. Together they formed a Wagner ensemble so splendid that - in the words of the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung - “none better could currently be wished for”.

Drawing on the romantic spirit in music, Schubert's moving setting is of a poem by Goethe which compares a rushing waterfall to the soul of man, while Strauss's gorgeous Mittagsruhe depicts the peace of a summer noontide. Narrative vocal traditions are heard in Sibelius's nationalist Vapautettu kuningatar, Bruckner's heroic Helgoland, and Grieg's Landkjenning, which tells of the 10th century Norwegian king Oleg Tryggvason. Das Liebesmahl der Apostel anticipates the religious ecstasies of Wagner's Parsifal, while Debussy's early cantata Invocation resonates with Gallic sparkle.

This recording presents three different, utterly contrasting responses to the quest for expression and the solution to the old problem of how to merge text and music into a unity. The common theme linking these compositions, 'The Passion and Pains of Love', has been wrested from the texts of these choral works: they are poetic declarations of love, descriptions of nature with erotic and intimate imagery, poems that speak of unfulfilled yearning and breaking hearts. Their poetic quality opens a range of expression every bit as varied as the three musical settings they stimulated.
