The choir from Our Lady of Perpetual Succour School for Girls is being bussed to the national finals in the big, big city. It's an important day for The Sopranos, with pub-crawling, shoplifting and body-piercing being the top priorities. And with a newly anchored nuclear sub in the bay, the Man Trap disco will be full of submariners on shore-leave tonight. There is no time for delays - or even for winning…

But after the fifth bottle of alco-pop on the bus it's clear that all is not going to plan, for anyone. The Sopranos are never going to be the same.

“The Viennese oracle on the core literature of Haydn, Beethoven and Brahms,” is how The Philadelphia Inquirer has described the pianist Rudolf Buchbinder. It would be hard to find someone better qualified to record both Beethoven's 33 Diabelli Variations - a towering landmark of the piano repertoire - and the briefer variations composed by some 50 of Beethoven's contemporaries at the invitation of Anton Diabelli, an enterprising Viennese publisher. The theme was a waltz written by Diabelli himself. Among the composers who took up the challenge were Franz Schubert, Franz Liszt, Carl Czerny, Johann Nepomuk Hummel, Ignaz Moscheles, Václav Tomášek and Franz Xaver Wolfgang Mozart.

Tema by Anton Diabelli & 52 Variations by Ignaz Aßmayer, Carl Maria von Bocklet, Leopold Czapek, Carl Czerny, Joseph Czerny, Johann Baptist Gänsbacher, Josef Gelinek, Anton Halm, Joachim Hoffmann, Johann Horzalka, Joseph Huglmann, Johann Nepomuk Hummel, Anselm Hüttenbrenner, Friedrich Kalkbrenner, Friedrich August Kanne, Joseph Kerzkowsky, Conradin Kreutzer, Heinrich Eduard Josef Baron von Lannoy, Marcus Leidesdorf, Franz Liszt, Joseph Mayseder, Ignaz Moscheles, Ignaz Franz Baron von Mosel, Franz Xaver Wolfgang Mozart, Joseph Panny, Hieronymus Payer, Johann Peter Pixis, Václav Plachy, Gottfried Rieger, Philipp Jakob Riotte, Franz de Paula Roser, Johann Baptist Schenk, Franz Schoberlechner, Franz Schubert, Simon Sechter, Archduke Rudolph of Austria, Abbé Maximilian Stadler, Joseph von Szalay, Václav Jan Křtitel Tomášek, Michael Umlauf, Friedrich Dionys Weber, Franz Weber, Charles Angelus de Winkhler, Franz Weiss, Jan August Vitásek, Jan Václav Voříšek

Yundi (piano/conductor), Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra

Yundi, one of the most celebrated and influential pianists of today, has returned to Warner Classics with the signature of a long-term agreement between him and the label. His first release under the new agreement, due for release in January

2020, will be an album of Chopin's Piano Concertos Nos 1 and 2, on which he directs the Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra from the keyboard. This constitutes both his first recording as pianist-conductor and his first recording of the Piano Concerto No 2. His previous Warner Classics release, the complete Chopin Nocturnes, dates from 2010.

Warsaw and Chopin have played an essential role in Yundi's career: in 2000, at the age of just 18, he became the youngest winner of the Chopin International Piano Competition. Since then, he has become recognised as a leading exponent of the Polish composer's music and in 2015 served on the jury of the Chopin Competition. Earlier this year, in recognition of his contribution to Polish culture, he received Poland's Gold Medal for Merit to Culture, 'Gloria Artis'. He first conducted the Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra in Chopin's two concertos in 2017, performing in Warsaw, Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenzhen and Chongqing

“I have heard an angel sing,” wrote Schubert after he heard Paganini play in Vienna in 1828. Vilde Frang, partnered by pianist Michael Lifits, juxtaposes and links works by these two violinist-composers, who lived vastly different lives, yet are musically connected. Both found inspiration in the human voice and Frang sheds new light on Schubert's demands for virtuosity and on Paganini's sensitive musicality.

Vilde Frang, partnered by pianist Michael Lifits, has assembled a programme that juxtaposes music by two violinist-composers of the early 19th century, Franz Schubert and Niccolò Paganini. While they lived vastly different lives and inhabited diverse aesthetic worlds, there are links to be found between them.

Through the juxtaposition, Frang wants to highlight Schubert's capacity for virtuosity and Paganini's musicality and sensitivity. “It's the contrasts that appeal to me,” she says. For her, the key connection between Schubert and Paganini is the inspiration they both found in the human voice. The album includes variations that Paganini wrote on themes from operas by Rossini (Tancredi) and Paisiello (La molinara), and the 'grand caprice' that the violinist Heinrich Wilhelm Ernst - considered Paganini's greatest successor - based on one of Schubert's most thrilling songs, Erlkönig. It sets a poem by Goethe that tells of a frantic night-time horse-ride by a father and his young son, who is tempted by a wicked spirit, the Erlking. When they reach their destination, the child is dead. “This Erlkönig is a gift to the violinist. There is such precision and accuracy in Ernst's transcription - it works so well that it sounds like it was written for the violin. And then there is the challenge of characterising the galloping horse, the father, the son and the Erlkönig himself.”

Vilde Frang (violin), Michael Lifits (piano)

With an album of celebration - both joyful and solemn - trumpeter Alison Balsom again declares her love for the baroque era, which she calls “the golden age of the trumpet”. Joining Handel's exuberant Music for the Royal Fireworks are works by two other German-born composers - JS Bach and Telemann - and by the London-born Henry Purcell. “These baroque composers knew the instrument they were writing for,” says Balsom. “There is such value in searching out the sound that they would have heard themselves, with the intention of authenticity. When it comes together it is utterly thrilling.”

Beatrice Rana, in the words of the New York Times, is a pianist who “has ferocious technique but is distinguished by her musical intelligence.” Here she plays virtuosic, poetic works that evoke the creative ferment of Paris in the transitional early years of the 20th century: piano transcriptions of Stravinsky's iridescent ballet scores The Firebird and Petrushka, and Ravel's Miroirs and La Valse.

On her first Warner Classics album pianist Mariam Batsashvili combines solo works by Franz Liszt - a figure of special significance for her - and his contemporary Frédéric Chopin. She left her native Georgia to study at the Franz Liszt Conservatory in Weimar and gained international recognition in 2014 when she won the 10th Franz Liszt Piano Competition. Chopin was just a year older than Liszt and the two became good friends in Paris. The two pianist-composers are, as Batsashvili explains, “very, very different in the way they express themselves, but I can hear in their music that they respected each other greatly.”

As Anneleen Lenaerts proves, Nino Rota brought the same gifts to his music for harp as he did to such unforgettable film scores as The Godfather, La dolce vita and Romeo and Juliet. “What could be better than to sweep an audience away and give them a moment of pure joy?” she asks. “For me, that is Nino Rota's most important musical message.

Dalal (piano)

Mesmerising sound: “I search for purity. For relationships in perfect equilibrium. As in a Japanese garden. Stones lie there, but they have not simply been laid there by someone; they each have a meaning. A story.” At the start of his career, the Italian pianist and composer Ludovico Einaudi was a loyal member of the avant-garde - but his yearning for Romanticism led him to a completely new style: minimalist, pure, hypnotically beautiful. With grace and wonderfully meditative clarity, pianist Dalal plays the maestro's best-loved pieces on this album.

Sacred oils are part of a mysterious and ancient art that dates back thousands of years. Their knowledge is passed from master to master - only a handful of people alive hold this knowledge. Among them is Felicity Warner, a healer and myrrhophore. In this book, Felicity guides you through a healing journey with 20 of the world's most treasured oils, including Elemi, Holy Basil, Palo Santo and Spikenard. Detailing their history dating back to Egypt and Babylon, she explains how to: * mix, dilute, blend and store the oils * perform sacred rituals of anointment * attune to the frequency of each oil through meditation, and by using mandalas as a pathway to deeper consciousness * use the oils to cleanse auras and heal the soul, for prophecy and to access past-life information. Sacred Oils is aimed at anyone seeking deep healing, self-care and expanded consciousness, or wishing to develop their work in divination, prophecy and spiritual guidance. This is the very first book of its kind - there is nothing else like it on the market.
