“I have heard an angel sing,” wrote Schubert after he heard Paganini play in Vienna in 1828. Vilde Frang, partnered by pianist Michael Lifits, juxtaposes and links works by these two violinist-composers, who lived vastly different lives, yet are musically connected. Both found inspiration in the human voice and Frang sheds new light on Schubert's demands for virtuosity and on Paganini's sensitive musicality.

Vilde Frang, partnered by pianist Michael Lifits, has assembled a programme that juxtaposes music by two violinist-composers of the early 19th century, Franz Schubert and Niccolò Paganini. While they lived vastly different lives and inhabited diverse aesthetic worlds, there are links to be found between them.

Through the juxtaposition, Frang wants to highlight Schubert's capacity for virtuosity and Paganini's musicality and sensitivity. “It's the contrasts that appeal to me,” she says. For her, the key connection between Schubert and Paganini is the inspiration they both found in the human voice. The album includes variations that Paganini wrote on themes from operas by Rossini (Tancredi) and Paisiello (La molinara), and the 'grand caprice' that the violinist Heinrich Wilhelm Ernst - considered Paganini's greatest successor - based on one of Schubert's most thrilling songs, Erlkönig. It sets a poem by Goethe that tells of a frantic night-time horse-ride by a father and his young son, who is tempted by a wicked spirit, the Erlking. When they reach their destination, the child is dead. “This Erlkönig is a gift to the violinist. There is such precision and accuracy in Ernst's transcription - it works so well that it sounds like it was written for the violin. And then there is the challenge of characterising the galloping horse, the father, the son and the Erlkönig himself.”

In the midst of his work on Star Wars' Final Episode IX John Williams has created and conducted a complete album with Anne-Sophie Mutter and in mutual admiration. It presents his personal selection of iconic themes as well as rediscovered gems from more than 40 years of his music for film.

The music ranges from Star Wars motifs (“Luke and Leia” from Return of the Jedi) to more recent pieces (“Hedwig's Theme” from Harry Potter) Two themes from Williams' Oscar-winning Schindler's List score (the main theme and “Remembrances”) are also featured. A few more surprising choices include new versions of themes from Cinderella Liberty and Dracula, originally written in the 1970s and rarely performed since then.

Renaud Capuçon (violin) & David Fray (piano)

The violin was one of Bach's favourite instruments and inspired his most lyrical outpourings. We know he was greatly influenced by the Italian masters whose work he discovered during his Weimar years - by the power of Frescobaldi, the melodic flexibility of Corelli, the sunny grace of Vivaldi - but he developed his own wonderful artistry in writing music of polyphonic density for the violin and “playing” with its sound palette. His deep understanding of the instrument clearly enabled him to exploit its full potential and to write as well as perform music of the utmost virtuosity.

Pianist Rafał Blechacz is returning with beautiful, ecstatic and very colorful French/Polish chamber music repertoire. For his first ever chamber music recording on DG he teams up with the supreme musicianship of Korean violinist Bomsori Kim.

Polish melancholy and French elegance are connecting to a wonderfully symbiotic relationship in music, a point well illustrated by the works of Frédéric Chopin, who, Polish by birth, settled in France.

For their first album together Bomsori Kim and Rafał Blechacz decided to combine pieces from both of those countries.

Rafal's playing is characterized by its elegance, delicacy, and a poetic solemnity that has invited comparison to legendary pianists including Krystian Zimerman, who is a Blechacz supporter.

Bomsori is a celebrated young stellar artist in Korea who is on the way to the top of the international violin scene.

They will perform repertoire from the album live on tour at venues in South Korea and Europe next spring.

This album will be released in connection with the DG120 celebrations.

After his exciting journey into the musical tradition of Eastern Europe (Journey East), the Baroque Sound-scapes of J.S. Bach (Bach), the Russian melodies of P.I. Tchaikovsky (Tchaikovsky), Nemanja Radulovic now embarks on a musical journey through the Orient - from Armenian reality to Persic daydream.

This Oriental album includes a newly arranged “Scheherezade” as well as Khachaturian's highly virtuosic violin concerto.

Nemanja's a personal approach when creating an album is essential. The Serbian word “Baïka” translates to “tale” or “fairytale” and was chosen by him personally, because everything on this album feels like “Baïka” to him.

Commissioned for Nemanja's ensemble Double Sens, Serbian composer and arranger Aleksandar Sedlar re-visited the fate of Scheherazade, queen and storyteller of One Thousand and One Nights. His composition is based on the Scheherazade Suite Op. 35 by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov and intriguingly recounts tales and treasures from the centuries-old epos. There will be a music video of the 1st movement.

To record Aram Khachaturian's violin concerto Nemanja chose Borusan Istanbul Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Sascha Goetzel, a pairing that already follows a successful collaboration on stage. The beautiful concerto is performed and recorded very rarely, which may be blamed on its virtuosity. Nemanja is considered as the current specialist of this work, adding a very personal and individual interpretation.

This recording of works for violin and piano/orchestra by Krzysztof Penderecki marks and celebrates the long and fruitful cooperation and friendship between Anne-Sophie Mutter and Krzysztof Penderecki on the occasion of his 85th birthday on 23 November 2018.

Deutsche Grammophon is releasing a double album showcasing a number of the composer's works for violin and piano or violin and orchestra, including La Follia, Duo concertante, Sonata No.2 and Metamorphosen. All of them feature the violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter, whose name is closely associated with that of Penderecki. Penderecki dedicated his Violin Sonata No.2 for Anne-Sophie Mutter, out of admiration for her interpretative skills, as have many other contemporary composers. The piece consists of five parts and is almost as long as the composer's concertos for violin. Anne-Sophie premiered the work together with Lambert Orkis, her longtime musician partner, at the Barbican in London on 29 April 2000 and has recorded it now for the first time. The recording of Duo concertante includes the young bass player Roman Patkoló as Anne-Sophie Mutter's partner. Patkoló was a student of the Anne-Sophie Mutter foundation.

Joshua Bell (violin/director)
Academy of St. Martin in the Fields

Awards
Grammy Awards 61st Awards (2019) Nominee - Classical Instrumental Solo

A new Sony Classical release from Grammy Award-winning violinist Joshua Bell showcases two masterpieces from romantic composer Max Bruch. The album features Bell's first recording of the virtuosic Scottish Fantasy as well as a new recording of the Violin Concerto No. 1 in G minor, which he first recorded over thirty years ago with the Academy of St Martin in the Fields and Sir Neville Marriner. Now, as Music Director of the Academy, Bell both performs and directs the orchestra and offers a fresh take on the Bruch Concerto in addition to a thrilling performance of the Scottish Fantasy. In recent years, the Scottish Fantasy has become a favourite performance piece for Bell and his affection for the piece runs deep and with good reason: “My father's descendants were from Scotland, and I grew up hearing stories about how my great- grandfather and great-great-grandfather fought in the Black Watch in Scotland. My dad was proud of his Scottish heritage, and this connection makes the melodies in Bruch's Scottish Fantasy even more meaningful to me.” The Fantasy bristles with the snap and lilt of Scottish folk songs and Bell goes on to say “It is one of the most beautiful and touching pieces I know, and so brilliantly orchestrated. It is a unique 'concerto,' not following the traditional three-movement form. Each of its four movements tells a story.”

Bell recalls how Bruch's ever-popular Violin Concerto No.1 was the first major concerto he learned as an 11-year-old. “This piece is connected to so many memories!” Bell mentions that the great nineteenth-century violinist, Joseph Joachim, who figured prominently in Bell's recent Sony Classical release, For the Love of Brahms, placed Bruch's concerto in the same league as those of Beethoven, Brahms, and Mendelssohn and called it “the most seductive of violin concertos.” Bell says, “It is a huge audience favorite because it is so rich and lush. It has excitement, power, passion, and intimacy--it's got everything!” “Now after more than thirty years of performing this concerto and with a variety of conductors, I am still inspired by the work, and I continue to find myself exploring fresh ideas and new possibilities for expression. As Music Director, I now have the opportunity to conduct while playing the solo part and it actually brings a whole new dimension to this piece. The Academy of St Martin in the Fields has become my musical family over the past decade, and I feel we have special chemistry!'
