To celebrate the 60th birthday of the international renowned conductor, Christian Thielemann, Sony Classical is pleased to release this stunning new recording of Schumann's complete symphonies performed by the world class Staatskapelle Dresden under the baton of Thielemann. This breathtaking release comes after the success of the critically acclaimed New Year's concert which was conducted by Thielemann. An expert of romantic German repertoire, Thielemann's brilliant interpretation of Schumann's Symphonies is performed wonderfully by the Staatskapelle Dresden. As early as the 17th century in the days of Fleet Admiral Michiel de Ruyter, one of the initiators of the Netherlands Marine Corps, music has played an important role in the navy. Transforming from ships' bands and ensembles into a land-based full-sized orchestra ashore, the Marine Band turned into the all-round musical ambassador of the Royal Netherlands Navy.

From military marching formation, intimate accompanying ensemble, extended big band and classic symphonic wind band to a stunning cover band; no music style is absent from the enormous repertoire.

The Marine Band of the Royal Netherlands Navy developed an appreciation for Russia and the music of her great composers. As part of the celebrations of 300 years Peter the Great and the jubilee of the city, concert tours to St. Petersburg were made in 1997 and 2003. In 2009 the branch of the Hermitage in Amsterdam was opened with a concert and attended by Queen Beatrix and President Medvedev.

In 2013 the Marine Band and the Drums & Fifes of the Netherlands Marine Corps participated in the famous International Military Music Festival 'Spasskaya Tower” on the Red Square in Moscow.

In 2017 the Marine Band of the Royal Netherlands Navy appointed maestro Arjan Tien as its principal conductor and music director. Musicians and critics alike appreciate his interpretations for their warmth, energy and sensitivity, and he is widely considered to be one of the most versatile conductors of his generation.

Marking Leonard Bernstein's centenary, Sir Antonio Pappano conducts the American composer's three symphonies and Prelude, Fugue and Riffs. The Orchestra dell'Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia had a long association with Bernstein, who first conducted the orchestra in 1948. “I find these symphonies revelatory in the true sense of the word,” says Pappano. “They are hugely emotive and personal … At heart, Lenny was filled with the desire for the brotherhood of man to be something real and concrete … As a great Renaissance man, he was trying to make the world good.”

Along with Suchon and Cikker, Alexander Moyzes was one of the leading Slovak composers of his generation. His compositional style was inspired by the folk music and beautiful landscapes of his native land, but also took account of contemporary trends in European music after the First World War. These early symphonies, infused with Moyzes' masterful orchestration and control of counterpoint, signify a new period in 20th century Slovak music. This album is a reissue of a previous release from 2000 that was part of the Marco Polo complete Moyzes symphonic cycle. Fanfare wrote of the original release: “A [release] no collection of 20th century symphony can do without. Bring on the remaining 10!” ClassicsToday.com wrote: “Moyzes' music is engaging, well crafted, and beautifully orchestrated- qualities clearly understood and successfully conveyed by Ladislav Slovak and his Slovak Radio Symphony Orchestra.

Pursuing a musical career was no easy matter for women in the 19th century, but Louise Farrenc's character and determination resulted in her becoming a respected part of the European scene, and the first ever female senior professor of piano at the Paris Conservatoire. Farrenc's Second Symphony owes something to Mozartian models, with imaginative writing for winds and hints of Beethoven. The Third Symphony is notable for a richness of harmonic writing which, in its colour and lyricism, is reminiscent of Mendelssohn and Schumann.

Albert Camus once wrote 'when I describe what the catastrophe of modern man looks like, music comes into my mind - the music of Gustav Mahler'. If asked to specify a particular work, it is quite possible that Camus would have proposed Symphony No. 6 in A minor - the symphony that Bruno Walter claimed portrayed 'a terrifying, hopeless darkness, without a human sound'. Nevertheless, the period during which Mahler wrote his Sixth was one of the most successful and happiest of his life - prior to any marital difficulties, at the time of the birth of his second daughter Anna, his professional reputation growing.

Alma Mahler, in her memoirs, suggested that the symphony was in fact predicting instances of future distress in the composer's own life, and she and various commentators have proposed various interpretations of different elements. Most famous of these are possibly the hammer strokes in the Finale, falling, according to Alma, like 'blows of fate' on the 'hero' of the symphony.

But Osmo Vänskä has a reputation for engaging with even the most iconic scores at face value, avoiding preconceived ideas and 'time-honoured' traditions. His and the Minnesota Orchestra's recording of Mahler's Sixth follows upon the 2017 release of the composer's Fifth Symphony. Nominated to a 2018 Grammy Award, that interpretation has been described as 'at once committed and detached, intense and transcendentally timeless' (Norman Lebrecht) and 'an exceptional performance that promises great things to come' (allmusic.com).

Christian Thielemann and the Staatskapelle Dresden already released the Bruckner symphonies Nos. 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9 and continue their Bruckner Cycle at the Philharmonie in Munich with Symphony No. 1 in C minor, Bruckner's first masterful composition. Thielemann, widely regarded as the leading Brucknerian of our age, opted for the livelier early original Linz version of this symphony. Buckner himself called it 'a cheeky wench' and said about the finale: 'Never again have I been so audacious and bold'.
