The origins of this album - the Artemis Quartet's first recordings of Shostakovich - lie in the ensemble's long-established relationship with the great pianist Elisabeth Leonskaja. For years, the quartet had been wanting to record the Russian composer's Piano Quintet with her.

It is coupled with Quartets No 5 and No 7, multi-faceted works which are expressive of the composer's private persona.

Joseph Haydn claimed to have discovered the string quartet form by accident. His Op.1 no.1 has the cheerful five-movement form of a Divertimento, while the glorious and harmonically daring Op.77 no.1 was among the last he completed in the genre. Falling between the two, Op.33 no.5 is full of rhythmic surprises and a theme that gives it the nickname, 'How do you do?'

Today, the Goldmund Quartet is considered one of the most exciting young string quartets in Europe. Since their début at Munich's Prinzregententheater, the quartet has appeared at international festivals such as the Festival Aix-en-Provence, Festival de Música y Danza Granada, Ludwigsburger Schlossfestspiele and Heidelberger Frühling. The quartet has been awarded several prizes, including a Yehudi Menuhin Live Music Now scholarship, and recently a scholarship from the Deutscher Musikwettbewerb as well as the 2015 Bavarian Young Artist Award. Concert recordings have been made by the Bavarian Radio, ARD, Deutschlandradio and Einsfestival.

This release unites on record for the first time America's reigning star soprano Renée Fleming and its premier string quartet, The Emersons, to take us on a journey into the twilight world of Vienna in the 1920s and 30s in music imbued with late romanticism and burgeoning modernism.

Berg's Lyric Suite is a work of intricate, complexity believed to have a secret dedication and to outline a secret programme relating to Berg's affair with Franz Werfel's sister (Werfel was married to Mahler's widow, Alma). Theodor Adorno called the work a “latent opera” and in its sixth and final movement, the Largo desolato, Berg introduces the soprano voice and quotes Wagner's Tristan motif to evoke his doomed, impossible love.

This was still secessionist Vienna: a world of paintings by Klimt, psychoanalysis by Freud and a musical life where you could hear Bruno Walter conduct Mahler and Clemens Krauss lead the operas of Richard Strauss.

Egon Wellesz's highly expressive setting of Sonnets by Elizabeth Barrett-Browning was one of the last works he completed before leaving Austria ahead of the Anschluss in 1938. It is heard here in its original version for soprano and string quartet. Barrett-Browning was one of the most popular English poets of the Victoria era, although Wellesz turned to German translations by Rainer Maria Rilke for his setting.

Renée Fleming is famed for her “intense and luxurious” (Evening Standard) performances of Richard Strauss and Korngold, Berg and Mahler. Her sumptuous sound is uniquely suited to this repertoire.

As Edward Seckerson wrote of her fin de siècle recital at the Barbican in 2012: “We were back in Vienna's golden age and it seemed like that was where she had always belonged”.

Known as a piano teacher, with whose works almost every piano pupil should be familiar and possibly also as a pupil of Beethoven, Carl Czerny enjoys practically no fame as a composer today. The composing maniac (round about 800 published works) acquired a great reputation (and wealth) from piano teaching and writing educational works for the piano and compositions the market expected from him and from which he earned a lot of money. At the moment, seven quartets are recorded, four of which were probably intended for publication. Czerny composed in the tradition of Haydn and Beethoven. Echoes of Mendelssohn can be discerned as well as a romantic style full of drama and profundity of expression. The quartets have only been passed down as manuscripts from Czerny's estate, which can be found in the archives of the Society of Friends of Music in Vienna.

Debussy's music reveals characteristics that justifiably move it into the proximity of Impressionist painting, as it produces moving paintings, landscapes of sound, and soundscapes in the narrowest sense of the word that can draw the listener into the middle of the picture.

Maurice Ravel's String Quartet, completed in 1903, had to be and was compared with Debussy's quartet. At the same time, it can be seen here how Ravel's musical diction - based on Debussy's - prepared the way for French Modernism.

Like only a few of his colleagues, the Briton Thomas Adès, born in 1971, is capable of fusing traditional elements from music history, including obvious references to existing compositions, with modern sound production, into an individual style appealing directly to the listener.

The Endellion String Quartet is renowned as one of the finest string quartets in the world. This DVD contains a performance of three Beethoven quartets - Opus 18, no. 6, String Quartet in B flat major, Opus 59, no.2 String Quartet in E minor Razumovsky & Opus 131, String Quartet in C sharp minor. The quartet scores used in these recordings were prepared by the notable Beethoven scholar and editor, Jonathan Del Mar in collaboration with the Endellion Quartet. ... these superb musicians respond to the dark undertow so characteristic of Beethoven's quartets as much as the gentle lyricism which invariably breaks through. Thuille worked as a composer and teacher of the Münchner Schule, one of the leading musical centres of Europe at the turn of the 20th century. He was a friend of Richard Strauss and their friendship is well documented in Strauss' letters. These two string quartets were written when Thuille was a student. This CD casts a new light on a forgotten composer.
