Presto Recording of the Week 9th April 2012

Starring Angela Gheorghiu as the celebrated French actress Adriana Lecouvreur and Jonas Kaufmann as her lover Maurizio, Count of Saxony, Cilea's verismo drama explores celebrity, romance, jealousy, and death.

The trio of sublime voices is completed by Russian mezzo-soprano Olga Borodina as Adriana's jealous rival, the Princess de Bouillon.

David McVicar's hit production - the first performance of the opera at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden for more than a century - presents the life of the French actress as a blurring of the distinction between fantasy and reality.

The action revolves around a life-size Baroque Theatre, taking us from the bustle and colour of the first act backstage at the playhouse, to the bare final scenes as the drama reaches its fatal climax.

The DVD & Blu-ray contain bonus footage featuring interviews with the principal artists, Director, Set Designer and Conductor.

“Kaufmann and Gheorghiu radiate sexiness' (Financial Times)

“Gheorghiu is a dream' (The Independent)

Jonas Kaufmann returns to the Italian verismo tradition to sing arias that define opera's most passionate and vulnerable leading men.

Kaufmann's international reputation is soaring as, going from strength to strength, he delivers consistently thrilling performances.

The onyx-dark beauty of his tone and the refinement and unexpected insights of his delivery mark Jonas Kaufmann a poet of tenors.

Timed for release when he makes his anticipated role debut as Maurizio in Adriana Lecouvreur at Covent Garden opposite Angela Gheorghiu, this disc includes excerpts from the Cilea work that helped put Caruso on the map.

This album also entices with rarities from Zandonai's dramatic Giulietta e Romeo and Puccini's Le Villi.

Supporting Jonas Kaufmann is Italy's leading symphonic orchestra, the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia, under its dynamic music director Antonio Pappano. Both maestro and orchestra are utterly at home in this repertoire.

Adriana Lecouvreur, although a melodramatic fictional tale, is based on a real-life actress of the ComÉdie-FranÇaise, and is the only one of Cilea's operas to have held a place in the repertory, albeit on the fringes. The opera is tuneful and melodic with some arias that are also occasionally heard in recital but its main challenge is for a dramatic soprano and this is amply demonstrated here by Renata Scotto.
