Conductor Laurence Equilbey is fascinated and inspired by the unconventional, hybrid character of Beethoven's Choral Fantasy and Triple Concerto. She sees it as “the root of their originality, which gives them a special place in Beethoven's output and in the history of music as a whole.” Their fusion of genres is reflected in performances that unite the period instruments of Equilbey's Insula orchestra and soloists - pianists Bertrand Chamayou and David Kadouch, violinist Alexandra Conunova and cellist Natalie Clein - who are best known for playing modern instruments.

The coronation of Leopold II in Prague in 1791 came at a difficult time for European monarchs, although Leopold himself enjoyed a reputation as an enlightened ruler. Two musical works were commissioned for the occasion: Mozart's opera La clemenza di Tito and Koželuch's cantata Heil dem Monarchen. The cantata, by turns celebratory, serene and darkly dramatic, was well received and enhanced Koželuch's reputation in royal circles. It almost certainly played a part in his appointment in 1792 to the court of Leopold's son and successor, the last Holy Roman Emperor Franz II.

Jacqueline Kennedy commissioned Leonard Bernstein to compose this massive work for the inauguration of the Kennedy Centre in New York. It premiered on 8 September 1971. Bernstein decided to write an innovative Mass and what came out is, say, a Catholic Mass getting out of hand.

The Mass is seen through the eyes of a Jewish composer with an extraordinary palette of musical styles at his disposal, the work draws on influences from religious to popular and broadway musical genres.

Requiring two orchestras, rock band, marching band, multiple choirs and musical singers, for obvious reasons, the monumental work is rarely performed and even rarer on disc.

Born out of the political and social turmoil of the 60s, its main character experiences a roller-coaster of emotions and questioning of faith. On a wide variety of levels, this work is as relevant today as it was at its inception. Nixon, then President, refused to attend the premiere after an FBI warning for fear it could contain anti-war/anti-government sentiments.

Unified under his baton, Yannick Nézet-Séguin forges a powerfully emotional interpretation of this unique work - a cross-section of European and American Music.

ohann Sebastian Bach's St John Passion is, along with the St Matthew Passion, without doubt one of the most important works he ever composed. It established a new tradition for Good Friday vespers in Leipzig, and with sublime skill Bach managed to retain a spirit of church worship while creating an almost operatic narrative that movingly depicts Christ's trial, death, and ultimate apotheosis. Bach's numerous revisions always demand a certain amount of scholarly decision-making, and this recording of the St John Passion uses the final 1749 version that not only draws on and reinforces the best of Bach's original concept, but incorporates the additional movements of the 1725 version.

A beautiful new album of compositions and arrangements for choir and strings by Norwegian composer, Ola Gjeilo.

Including new arrangements of familiar Christmas carols in a beautiful and intimate setting to emulate the feeling of “Hygge”.

Ola Gjeilo (pronounced Yay-lo) is one of the most frequently performed composers in the choral world.

An accomplished pianist, improvisations over his own published choral pieces have become a trademark of his collaborations across the world.

Although Norwegian by birth, it is perhaps Ola's adopted country of America that has influenced the composer's distinctive sound world the most, evolving a style that is both contemporary and familiar; thick harmonies and rich textures recall film score - music that forms a major part of the composer's inspiration.

Polychoral music is so synonymous with 16th century Venice that it is easy to forget that the longest flourishing of this style- possibly even its invention- took place in Germany. Whether or not it was in Munich with the works of Orlande de Lassus that the Gabrielis first encountered its effects, polychoral music came to define German textures and techniques for over a century. Both apprentices and rivals to their Italian counterparts, composers such as Hieronymus Praetorius, Schutz, Hassler and Scheidt, as well as Austria's Biber, fostered a tradition whose influence would extend all the way to the motets of Bach. This performance places a giant of Baroque choral music, Biber's Missa Salisburgensis, alongside the Venetian choral works of Monteverdi from which it takes its inspiration. The combination is a heady one, a triumphal musical celebration uniquely appropriate to mark the 200th anniversary year of Salzburg's affiliation with Austria.

This richly varied collection of meditative sacred music takes its name, Agnus Dei, from the opening item, a setting for voices of Samuel Barber's celebrated and deeply expressive Adagio for Strings. The hauntingly melodic choral masterpieces that fill these two CDs span five centuries and are the work of composers such as Bach, Mozart, Allegri, Albinoni, Fauré, Rachmaninov, Mendelssohn, Brahms, Elgar and, from nearer our own time, John Tavener and Henryk Górecki. They are performed by the choir of New College Oxford, an exemplar of Britain's great choral tradition.

Commotio, Matthew Berry, Bob Chilcott

Bob Chilcott is one of Britain's most popular and respected composers and his choral music is performed worldwide. He has always embraced a broad stylistic palette and his writing for voice combined with jazz instrumentation gives these works a sense of vitality and energy. Performed by leading jazz soloists and Commotio, the distinguished promoters of contemporary repertoire, this sequence of brilliant villanelles, folk song arrangements and witty settings reveals once again the breadth of Chilcott's musical imagination. Chilcott has enjoyed a lifelong association with choral music, as a composer, conductor, and singer. He was a chorister and choral scholar in the choir of King's College, Cambridge and for twelve years was a member of the vocal group The King's Singers. In 1997 he became a full time composer. A Little Jazz Mass, Requiem, and St. John Passion are among a number of works from his prolific output which are performed worldwide. He has written large-scale works, including The Angry Planet, community-based projects, pieces for children, and a significant amount of music for the church. In 2017 Chilcott was awarded an Honorary Fellowship of The Royal School of Church Music.

When the revered writer Alessandro Manzoni died in 1873, Verdi was unable to bring himself to attend the funeral. Instead he composed his monumental Messa da Requiem in Manzoni's memory and conducted its first performance on the first anniversary of the writer's death. In addition to its profound spirituality, the work also brings together all the finest qualities familiar from Verdi's operas, qualities that include endless melodic lines and powerful musico-dramatic effects. The present performance was recorded in Los Angeles's legendary Hollywood Bowl in August 2013 and brought together three superstars from the world of music: the conductor Gustavo Dudamel, the tenor Vittorio Grigolo and the bass-baritone Ildebrando D'Arcangelo, all of them at the top of their form. 'It was an important and exceptional evening … That experience involved a radical and wondrous rethinking of the Requiem on Dudamel's part' (Los Angeles Times).
