Children: African stories

Children  -  African stories
R 190
A stunning new cover, design and format brings African Myths & Legends, a combination of two earlier publications (Daughter of the moonlight and Other African Tales and South African Myths and Legends), to life. It is a spellbinding and fascinati ng collection of tales that will enliven the
imagination of young readers.
Vividly illustrated, the book sustains the intrigue of storytelling that has been passed on from generation to generation. The magic lies in deciding whether the stories are fact or fiction. The book offers an explanation for the mysteries people encountered in their ordinary daily lives and the norms and social practices that have emerged from these events. Using historical events as a backdrop, yet weaving in fantasy and magic, these extraordinary tales are not only interesting but also highly informative and educational.

Dianne Stewart has postgraduate degrees in African Languages and English (specialising in South African Literature). She has written a number of highly acclaimed children's books, including Folktales from Africa. Many of her books have been published in other languages such as The Gift of the Sun (Zulu, Xhosa, Afrikaans, Danish, Norwegian, Swedish, Spanish, French and South Korean). Chasing the Wind has also been transcribed into Braille.

Jay Heale is an authority on children's books in South Africa and edits the Bookchat website which carries news and reviews of children's literature and is updated monthly. He has also written a number of books including True African Animal Tales and South African Sea Adventures, both published by Struik.

The tales of Jackal and Wolf are to South Africans what apple pie is to Americans. No one should grow up without them. Yet the sly Jackal and the whimsical Wolf is older than apple pie. These stories come from the Khoi-Khoi, a group of Bushmen who narrated them into existence shortly after the Stone Age. Animal Tales Volume 1 is the first book in a series of animal stories compiled by G. R. von Wielligh, who heard them as a child and who spent his adult life documenting them for future generations. In this edition, freshly translated into modern English, the stories get a new look thanks to the beautiful, full-color illustrations of Dale Blankenaar. Animal Tales Volume 1 is a compilation of 15 stories. We read about the big war between the walking and the flying animals; we are told who gets crowned as the king of the animals and we meet sly Jackal and poor, gullible Wolf. In Animal Tales Volume 2 among the 15 additional stories, we meet Tiger, Crocodile and Rabbit, while poor Wolf still suffers under the hand of Jackal and is often outwitted by Jackal. We also discover why Tortoise is such a gloomy fellow and how he came to learn that honesty is better than lying. We also read that even a clever animal like Baboon can be fooled.

Cheetah boasts that, because he can run faster than any other animal, he is the real king of the beasts. Winning a race against the other animals only reinforces his posturing and he boasts that he can run even faster than the wind. The wind takes up the challenge, leading to an outcome that keeps Cheetah's tears running down his cheeks as a permanent reminder of his place in the natural world.
How Cheetah Got His Tears is a story that warns of the perils of boasting, yet shows that the capacity to accept defeat with grace and humility can lead to reconciliation and acceptance.
