Wie is Cecilia Steyn?

As a medical detective of the modern world, forensic pathologist Ryan Blumenthal's chief goal is to bring perpetrators to justice. He has performed thousands of autopsies, which have helped bring numerous criminals to book. In Autopsy he covers the hard lessons learnt as a rookie pathologist, as well as some of the most unusual cases he's encountered.
During his career, for example, he has dealt with high-profile deaths, mass disasters, death by lightning and people killed by African wildlife. Blumenthal takes the reader behind the scenes at the mortuary, describing a typical autopsy and the instruments of the trade. He also shares a few trade secrets, like how to establish when a suicide is more likely to be a homicide.

Even though they cannot speak, the dead have a lot to say - and Blumenthal is there to listen.

The news of successful model Reeva Steenkamp's fatal shooting by her boyfriend and global sporting star Oscar Pistorius stunned the world. Over the ensuing weeks, as Pistorius appeared in court and applied for bail, every detail that emerged was analysed, debated, justified and digested. South Africa and the world in general were haunted by the events as they were repeated and discussed at length. Public perception vacillated from version to version and from hour to hour.
Vivid and gripping, insightful and authoritative, Behind the Door is the book to read on the Reeva and Oscar story.

Murder has always fascinated us, and when women are the masterminds, the intrigue grows exponentially. Not only are female murderers much rarer than male killers, but their crimes usually also involve a more sophisticated type of plotting. Award-winning journalist Tanya Farber investigates the lives, minds and motivations of some of South Africa's most notorious female murderers, from the poisonous nurse Daisy de Melker, to the privileged but deeply disturbed Najwa Petersen, to the mysterious Joey Harhoff who died before revealing where the bodies of her victims (including her own niece) were. Farber sets each case against the backdrop of the different eras and regions of 20th and early 21st century South Africa the women operated in.

This book takes head-on one of the highest-profile murder cases in recent South African history. In 2007 Fred van der Vyver was acquitted of the 2005 murder of fellow student Inge Lotz. He then sued the police to the highest court for malicious prosecution - and failed.
In spite of the defence's trashing of the prosecution's case at the trial, the authors show, compellingly, how every key element of the prosecuting evidence withstands the closest scrutiny. They use models, measurements, forensic tests, mathematical formulae and the views of experts both here and overseas.
They show how an ornamental hammer found in Van der Vyver's vehicle, but thrown out as evidence, could match the head wounds. Contrary to the claim accepted at court they show convincingly that a disputed fingerprint was not lifted off a drinking glass - a detail that could make all the difference.
They demonstrate how blood marks on a towel could have come off the hammer, how blood stains on the floor could have been shaped by a specific shoe and how a closer look at cellphone records reveal a different choreography of movements than what was accepted by the court.
Could it be that two amateurs succeeded where the state prosecution failed? Thomas, a language practitioner, and his engineer brother Calvin, have made headlines, been featured on Carte Blanche and vilified, but not proven wrong - leaving wide open one of the most tantalising unsolved murder cases on record.

The 2005 brutal assault and murder of student Inge Lotz, whose body was found in her Stellenbosch apartment, remains unsolved. Strangely, the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has closed the case - and shows no interest in hunting down Inge's killers.

Also murdered in 2005 were Jessica Wheeler and Victoria Stadler, in Knysna. Heinrich van Rooyen was found guilty of these two crimes in 2007 and is serving a sentence of 30 years imprisonment without parole - until 2035. For the past 13 years, Heinrich has maintained his innocence - and alleges that he was framed by the police.

During a four-year long investigation, an unseen hand in all three murders emerged - that of the late police Director Attie Trollip, who worked closely with the NPA. Proof has emerged that he was involved in the massive cover-up of Inge's murder to protect the perpetrators. In the two Knysna murders, the fabrication of forensic evidence against Heinrich by Trollip can also be proved.

In this book, readers are given clues into the identities of those who murdered Inge, Jessica and Victoria. A large amount of new factual evidence has been gathered - sufficient to demand that the South African Police Services reopen all three case so that the killers can be exposed and pay for their heinous crimes.

In September 2018, Collan Rex, former water polo coach at Parktown Boys High, was found guilty of 144 charges of sexual assault and sentenced to 23 years in prison. He had molested and choked a boarding house full of schoolboys into silence and shame, leaving behind a trail of broken lives. His response in court? It'd been done to him, in the same way, at the same school. Now the victims, the parents, and the abuser tell their stories.

Former Brigadier Piet Byleveld is recognised worldwide as one of the best detectives of our time. If you've committed murder and Piet Byl is called in, your place in jail is booked. If you've harmed children and he's on your case, you've sealed your own fate. And if you're a serial killer on the loose, he will not stop before you are behind bars.
This book reopens the dockets of numerous murders that this courteous detective has solved over the years. Gruesome, tragic, exciting - and with the satisfaction that justice had prevailed.

In 1957 Clarence Gordon van Buuren was convicted of the murder of Myrna Joy Aken and executed. He denied murdering her up to the very end. A young boy, Chris Marnewich, read the details in the newspaper and he had nightmares about them: Why was Van Buuren hanged if he had maintained his innocence?

The case was sensational for several reasons:
- It was alleged that a clairvoyant found the body after a séance.
- There were indications of a sexual relationship between Van Buuren and Aken.
- There was the crude sexual mutilation of the corpse.

The press leapt at the sensation: Women queued outside the court in long lines, trampling each other when the doors opened. Van Buuren enjoyed the attention and he flirted with them during the entire hearing.

Despite all the attention focussed on the case, the author found that the evidence led in court simply was the tip of the iceberg. The police dossier revealed so much more. Information indicated that Van Buuren was a narcissistic psychopath, a sadist who battered women. He was an emotional vampire and a sadistic sex murderer. Or was he? None of this was mentioned in the court case, nor in the newspapers.

When Marnewick decided to reinvestigate the case, the case record had disappeared. Eventually Marnewick tracked it down.

Today, more than 60 years after the murder, we are in a position to relive the crime through Marnewick's legal eye. The book tells the story of the murder, but it also traces Marnewick's own journey with the book.

Everyone who likes crime novels will love this book. Those who enjoyed Fruit of a Poisoned Tree by Antony Altbeker, about the Inge Lotz murder, will also be extremely grateful for this book.

In the early 1990s, a young Johann van Loggerenberg became a long-term deep cover agent for a unit investigating organised crime.
As agent RS536, he took on the guise of a drug smuggler in the Durban underworld and slowly infiltrated different crime syndicates. His transformation was so complete that within a few years he became one of the top five most wanted individuals in KwaZulu-Natal. But then his cover suddenly came under threat.

Van Loggerenberg was given documents containing information on so-called third force activities - where Military Intelligence and the Security Branch supplied weapons to the Inkatha Freedom Party. He dreaded sharing this information with the Goldstone Commission. Disaster threatened when former members of the Security Branch, who had since been transferred to his unit, got wind of this and started a campaign to discredit him.

This fascinating portrait of the criminal underworld is packed with action and drama.

'A remarkable, authentic and chilling expose of a global conspiracy that reads like a first-rate conspiracy thriller: a book of gripping, compulsive and disturbing impact' William Boyd Dark Mirror is the ultimate inside account of the vast, global surveillance network that now pervades all our lives. Barton Gellman's informant called himself 'Verax' - the truth-teller. It was only later that Verax unmasked himself as Edward Snowden. But Gellman's primary role in bringing Snowden's revelations to light, for which he shared the Pulitzer prize, is only the beginning of this gripping real-life spy story. Snowden unlocked the door: here Gellman describes what he found on the other side over the course of a years-long journey of investigation. It is also the story of his own escalating battle against unknown digital adversaries after he discovered his own name on a file in the NSA document trove and realised that he himself was under attack. Through a gripping narrative of paranoia, clandestine operations and jaw-dropping revelations, Dark Mirror delineates in full for the first time the hidden superstructure that connects government espionage with Silicon Valley and the most powerful corporation whose name you've never heard. Who is spying on us and why? Here are the answers.

In September 2007, Ellen Pakkies, a working mother from Lavender Hill on the Cape Flats, strangled her son to death. The judge in the subsequent trial sentenced her to community service for her crime. What drove Ellen to commit this horrific deed, and why the ostensibly light sentence for such a heinous crime?

The story of what happened over ten years ago has continued to grip public interest, putting a spotlight on the dire and desperate situation faced by many parents of addicted children. A highly successful play was produced in theatres around South Africa in 2011/12, and a full-length movie has recently been made of this story, which will reach the big screen in September 2018. When Dealing in Death was first published in 2009, the scourge of drug addiction was sweeping across South Africa, affecting every level of society. Little, if anything, has changed since then, as this new edition reveals. The use of tik, particularly in the Western Cape, has skyrocketed, and it was Abie Pakkies's addiction to this drug, and the horrendous impact it had on his and his family's lives, that drove Ellen to murder. Her trial exposed the dark underbelly of a community crippled by drug and alcohol abuse, and focused attention on the plight of those who live in poverty and do not have recourse to drug-rehabilitation centres and other measures effective in the treatment of addicts.

Dealing in Death looks at the global and local drugs culture, the predicament of Ellen Pakkies and other mothers like her, and an impoverished community and the apartheid laws that gave birth to it.
