There has never been a better opportunity to master textures. Knowing how to make your surfaces and textures look real is one of the most challenging aspects of creating art in colored pencil, even for experienced artists. 101 Textures in Colored Pencil provides artists with step-by-step instructions for drawing a wide variety of the most common textures and surfaces, including sand, water, metals, foliage, wood, fabrics, stone, grass, hair, and many more.
To get you started, this comprehensive guide opens with a review of tools and materials as well as basic skills, such as strokes, effects, and color mixing. Each page of instruction is a comprehensive resource on how to create a specific texture, complete with two to three easy-to-follow steps and a final, detailed image of the finished artwork. Plus, the book is organized into sections based on subject matter, so you can easily find the specific texture you're looking for. An artist's gallery in the back of the book provides examples of the textures in completed works of art.

Arthur Elliott was thirty years of age and of no settled profession when in 1900 he was given a quarter-plate camera as a present. Soon the main interest of this adventurous self-made American was recording the historic landmarks in Cape Town and its surroundings, with an unfailing eye for the essential that no photographer trying to capture the atmosphere of the old Cape has ever been able to equal.

The Elliott collection is one of the most remarkable photographic collections in the world. The qualities that make Elliot's photographs of old Cape scenes so memorable have something to do with the way the sunlight strikes the irregularity of the white plastered walls; with the way Elliott introduced the human element into his photographs; but mostly with the way his camera conveyed that delicate balance between picturesque dilapidation and unselfconscious prosperity that used to characterise Cape domestic architecture.

Elliott's rare rapport with his subject is complemented by a knowledgeable and affectionate commentary from a noted expert and enthusiast on the subject of South Africa's artistic and cultural heritage, Hans Fransen.

Giraffe stretch out their necks and bat-eared foxes curl their tails to make handles for jugs, vases and tureens. Inquisitive monkeys peer over the edge of a planter, teasing the leopards below them. Magical creatures wear cloaks of flowers, spots and stripes. A turbaned Zulu figure sits astride a hippo ...

Colourful, imaginative, vibrant, delicate and dramatic - these are just some of the hallmarks of the artworks that have garnered international accolades for Ardmore Ceramic Art in rural KwaZulu-Natal. It is here, in South Africa's most successful ceramics studio set in the verdant Midlands, that exquisitely handcrafted and highly detailed figurative works and functional ware are created by more than fifty artists who draw on Zulu traditions and folklore, history, the natural world, and their own lives for inspiration.

The distinctive historical architecture of the southwestern Cape, generally known as 'Cape Dutch', features ornate gables, thatched roofs and whitewashed walls. These buildings, frequently set in surroundings that enhance their dignity and aesthetic appeal, form part of a cultural heritage that is inextricably linked with the history of South Africa. A thoroughly researched and informative text describes the physical features of individual buildings, as well as their histories and those of their owners. Eleven regions within the southwestern Cape are covered, from central Cape Town to the West Coast, and including the towns of Stellenbosch, Paarl and Worcester. While each house is illustrated with at least one full-colour photograph, certain subjects, such as the Castle in Cape Town, Stellenbosch's Village Museum complex and the Mamre Mission, are dealt with at length. Particularly characteristic areas, like the Bo-Kaap in Cape Town, or the Bottelary region near Stellenbosch, are also given special treatment.

A unique look 'inside' 30 of Cape Town's most notable buildings. If you have ever wondered what lies behind an interesting façade, or wished you could peek behind a closed door, Hidden Cape Town is the book for you. The author and photographer have collaborated to reveal the artworks and architectural secrets that lie behind the doors of some well-known, and lesser known, landmark buildings in and around the 'Mother City'. These buildings are part of our collective heritage, reflecting the myriad cultural influences that have shaped our country.

These 'hidden' interiors include the Sendinggestig Museum, South African National Library, City Hall, Palm Tree Mosque, Welgelegen, the Royal Observatory, Bertram House, the Greek Orthodox Cathedral of St George, Groote Schuur, the Old Synagogue, Irma Stern Museum and the officer's mess of the Cape Town Rifles ('The Dukes').

Johannesburg: Egoli to some, Jozi to others. Once a mining town, now the most important commercial city in Africa. It's been home to renegades and rogues, colonialists and capitalists, the dispossessed and the newly enriched. Today it's populated by those who call themselves Africans or Afrikaners, by blacks, whites and every shade inbetween, and by immigrants from all over.

There are suburbs where the daily rituals of Jewish culture rival New York's; elsewhere, the tone is more Lagos than laid-back. Remnants of the colonial era stand alongside contemporary steel and glass. In a town that prides itself on the pursuit of fortune, it's a challenge to preserve heritage, and it is against this background that Hidden Johannesburg offers a snapshot of 28 notable buildings.

From the stately mansions of the Randlords to their downtown headquarters, the clubs where they socialised and the churches where they worshipped, the architecture of early Johannesburg lives on in sandstone, granite, marble and slate. But this is a city that constantly reinvents itself, and where the old is all-too-readily demolished to make way for the next 'big thing'. Some buildings will survive, others will be consigned to memory.

Hidden Johannesburg reveals fragments of the history of this vibrant city but, perhaps, the book also tells us something about our future, for if we allow our heritage to be swept away in the name of progress, are we advancing at all?

'Jean Doyle's work is renowned all over the world and her veneration of the fuller female figure has become a trademark of her work as well as a tool for social commentary' - Zanele Mbeki

Jean Doyle, A Portrait is a glorious tribute to one of South Africa's quietest artists. This part-biography, part critique explores how Jean has formed, shaped, forged and polished her career. Frequently told through her private sculpture notes, it goes beneath the layers of bronze and clay to the inspirational heart of her work, tracing her artistic journey. It celebrates the freshness, simplicity, intelligence, unmistakable sense of humour and, strikingly, the modest humility with which Jean Doyle has emerged as one of the greatest story-telling South African artists of our time.

The first-ever anthology of Jean Doyle's life and work, this is a rich and vivid exploration of this eminent South African artist's achievements. It is deeply personal and reveals never-before-seen sculpture notes. This book is a visual feast of Doyle's works, including useful thumbnail references in a practical, chronological appendix.

The book is aimed at art and mosaic lovers and mosaic crafters.

A full colour, coffee table art book containing over 400 photographs of magnificent, inspirational mosaics.

192 pages
210 x 250 mm landscape
hardcover
Outline
Mosaic is the art of creating beautiful patterns, images and motifs with the help of colourful tiles, glass pieces and stones to create decorative works for interior and exterior living spaces.

While the popularity of this centuries-old art form has waxed and waned over time, it has proved eternal and, with time, has become ever more polished and beautiful. Mosaics Made in Africa is a 192 page, 210x250mm, hardcover, full colour, coffee table book containing over 400 photograph.

It is a tribute to the exceptional mosaic work of Vera Valli Giovitto, and her beloved Mosaic Arts. These pages recount her journey from humble beginnings and a lifetime dedicated to the art of mosaic craftsmanship in South Africa, showcasing highlights of her life's work.

The book pays tribute to the dedicated team of artisans and designers at Mosaic Arts whose collaborative skills are an indispensable part of the works presented. With each new mosaic commission, their collection has grown to embody a diverse cross-section of styles reflecting the unique backdrop of the people and places they were made for. Although many of the mosaics are not accessible to the public, together they form a body of work that is truly inspiring and deserving of a broader platform of appreciation.

Marina Giovitto Ehlers, the author, is the Director of Mosaic Arts, a mother of three and a qualified Architect. She has worked with her mother for 20 years, from whom she learned the practice, art and love for mosaic. In 2011 she won the CEO Magazine award for the Most Influential Business Woman in Art & Culture.

The introduction of film study or analysis into the school curriculum along with the presentation of courses on the art of cinema at several universities and universities of technology has led to more and more students becoming cinema literate. Movies made easy is a guideline for students who want to discover or rediscover the joys of cinema, while focusing on important elements such as editing, subtext, directing and irony in a film. This is an update of Seeing sense - on film analysis but provides a greater balance between classic and contemporary films, and South African films and Hollywood blockbusters.

The award-winning architectural and design practice Mathews and Associates Architects was established in October 2000. To commemorate two decades of design, Pieter Mathews and his team have selected a diverse range of building types from more than 300 projects completed over the past twenty years.

Says Pieter Mathews, principal architect at Mathews and Associates Architects: “This publication gives me and my team an opportunity to look back, but it also allows us to look to the future with a clear vision and a spirit of innovation. It is our vision to expose the general public to architecture and to facilitate an understanding of, and appreciation for, design by enabling them to experience buildings first-hand. The selected projects from the past two decades anchor this publication, but a glimpse of the near future has also been included. 2020 will be remembered in history as the year in which the world came to a stop, changing our ways and our professions forever, but no matter how the world changes, architects will always have a role to play in society in one way or another. After all these years, my credo that a brick in a poetically designed building costs exactly the same as a brick in a mundane building, stands firm.”

In 2018 Pieter Mathews was honoured by the Afrikaans Academy for the Arts and Sciences (die Suid-Afrikaanse Akademie vir Wetenskap en Kuns) with the Medal of Honour Visual Art (Architecture).
