For the world premiere recording (2016) of Antonio Salieri's (1750-1825) comic opera La Scuola de' Gelosi, Werner Ehrhardt and his ensemble l'arte del mondo received fantastic reviews. In their new recording, the ensemble once again presents a world premiere recording of an early masterpiece by the 21-year-old Salieri, which was also acclaimed throughout Europe, but unfortunately passed into near-oblivion. The comic opera 'La Fiera di Venezia' was premiered on January 29, 1772 in Vienna. As a masquerade full of humor, the opera takes the listener into the joy of Venice's Ascension fairs. Until 1796, these were a big celebration with masks and parades. Among the approximately fifty operas that Salieri composed, 'La Fiera di Venezia' stands out not only by it's amusing setting, but also musically. Salieri's art of orchestration and instrumentation is extraordinary, which constantly emphasizes individual instruments, combining them with the voices of the singers. Even Mozart was so enthusiastic about 'La Fiera di Venezia' that in 1773 he composed piano variations on a duet from the second act. This duet Mio caro Adone forms one of the many highlights of this world premiere recording. 'La Fiera di Venezia' is Salieri's second opera, presented by Werner Ehrhardt and l'arte del mondo in an opera-excavation series realized since 2010 with the support of Bayer Kultur and in coproduction with WDR.

Jonas Kaufmann is now the Otello of this generation. This recording project is the crowning glory of his journey to become today's key exponent of this legendary role.

Verdi's Otello is a remarkable four-act opera based on Shakespeare's play Othello. Otello is considered Verdi's greatest and most demanding role for the tenor voice. Kaufmann made his debut as Otello in June 2017 at the Royal Opera House to widespread critical acclaim. Kaufmann has won numerous prestigious awards including Gramophone Awards and Echo Klassik Award. Jonas Kaufmann sings an Otello for the ages...

“His sound inescapably evokes memories of live performances and classic recordings by Vinay, Vickers and other masters; in a single night, he joined their company.” - The New York Times

Today Haydn is viewed mainly in the light of his string quartets and symphonies, yet his first and last compositions were Mass settings. They encompassed an extraordinary musical output, within which his Masses shine as uplifting and deeply satisfying sacred works.

Whilst acknowledging the Viennese traditions of church music, these Masses are infused with the kind of inspiration and originality that make Haydn an undisputed master in so many genres.

This collection by Trinity Choir includes all the complete and authenticated Masses by Haydn as well as his early Stabat Mater.

Marking Leonard Bernstein's centenary, Sir Antonio Pappano conducts the American composer's three symphonies and Prelude, Fugue and Riffs. The Orchestra dell'Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia had a long association with Bernstein, who first conducted the orchestra in 1948. “I find these symphonies revelatory in the true sense of the word,” says Pappano. “They are hugely emotive and personal … At heart, Lenny was filled with the desire for the brotherhood of man to be something real and concrete … As a great Renaissance man, he was trying to make the world good.”

“The most dramatic piece that Berlioz ever wrote,” is how conductor John Nelson describes La Damnation de Faust. The composer designated this thrilling hybrid of oratorio and opera a 'légende dramatique'. Following in the triumphant footsteps of Les Troyens, also recorded at the Auditorium Erasme in Strasbourg, this performance reunites Nelson and the Orchestre Philharmonique de Strasbourg with singers Michael Spyres, Joyce DiDonato and Nicolas Courjal.

“The most dramatic piece that Berlioz ever wrote,” is how conductor John Nelson describes La Damnation de Faust. Based on Goethe's Faust and first performed in 1846, it is an epic hybrid of oratorio and opera - a 'légende dramatique' according to the composer, who recognised that its greatest potential lay in firing the audience's imagination: “Music has great wings,” he said, “but the walls of a theatre do not allow it to spread them to the full.”

This recording was made in the Auditorium Erasme in Strasbourg in April 2019, two years after Nelson, the Orchestre Philharmonique de Strasbourg and a superb cast including Joyce DiDonato, Michael Spyres and Nicolas Courjal brought Berlioz's Les Troyens to life in the same venue. The associated Erato recording of the huge two-part opera has gone on to win unalloyed praise and multiple major prizes. As the New York Times wrote: “Berlioz's epic opera has rarely been given such luxury treatment as in this magnificent live recording from France.”

Conductor Laurence Equilbey is fascinated and inspired by the unconventional, hybrid character of Beethoven's Choral Fantasy and Triple Concerto. She sees it as “the root of their originality, which gives them a special place in Beethoven's output and in the history of music as a whole.” Their fusion of genres is reflected in performances that unite the period instruments of Equilbey's Insula orchestra and soloists - pianists Bertrand Chamayou and David Kadouch, violinist Alexandra Conunova and cellist Natalie Clein - who are best known for playing modern instruments.

Warner Classics is pleased to release the 12th annual 3CD set of highlights from the Progetto Martha Argerich in Lugano, described in The Times (London), as “community music-making on a deluxe scale, with performers and listeners mutually uplifted by music's wonders.” The recordings celebrate the musical fruits of a project in which young artists join seasoned performers, including Martha Argerich herself, to explore wide-ranging chamber music and orchestral repertoire, both well-known and rarely heard.

In addition to Ms Argerich, the 2014 Festival featured long-time collaborators such as Gidon Kremer, Gabriela Montero, Mischa Maisky, Gautier Capuçon and Lilya Zilberstein, as well as many of Ms Argerich's young protégées, including pianists Anton and Daniel Gerzenberg and violinists Geza Hosszu-Logocky and Andrey Baranov, winner of the 2012 Queen Elizabeth Competition. Also featured are pianists Alexander Mogilevsky, Francesco Piemontesi, Daniel Rivera, Dagmar Clottu, Akane Sakai, Eduardo Hubert, violinists Dora Schwarzberg and Michael Guttman, violist Nora Romanoff and cellists Jing Zhao and Mark Drobinsky.

The piano has been at the heart of all Lugano Festival programmes, from the Festival's inception, in performances of standard repertoire alongside rarely heard compositions and the 2014 season was no exception. Each year the Festival includes a piano concerto with Ms Argerich as soloist and this time it is Mozart's Concerto No 20 in D minor, K466, with the Orchestra della Svizzera Italiana conducted by Jacek Kaspszyk. Argerich also performs sonatas with each of two long-standing collaborators, cellist Mischa Maisky and violinist Gidon Kremer. She joins Maisky in Beethoven's Variations on 'Bei Männern, welche Liebe fühlen' based on Papageno and Pamina's duet in Mozart's opera Die Zauberflöte and Kremer, a champion of the work of Shostakovich's younger friend and colleague Mieczysław Weinberg, in the composer's Fifth Violin Sonata.

The Swiss pianist Dagmar Clottu appears for the first time in this series, joining Argerich in Francis Poulenc's Piano Sonata for four hands. Gautier Capuçon and Francesco Piemontesi perform Poulenc's Cello Sonata and Capuçon performs the Cello Sonata in D minor by Frank Bridge with Gabriela Montero.

Igor Levit has recently given highly acclaimed debuts in major musical centres across Europe and is being hailed by international critics as one of the most outstanding pianists of our time. Levit is a BBC Young Generation Artist and currently features in the “ECHO Rising Star” program of the European Concert House Organization. Not just another young aspiring pianist releasing his debut album, he is an outstanding artist who meets the exceptionally high technical and interpretative demands of this extraordinary repertoire. Despite his young age, Levit's interpretations display a rare depth and maturity, making for extremely well-balanced renderings on an artistic level of the great piano masters of our age. The Russian-German pianist performs one of the largest chunks of piano repertoire - Beethoven much-revered five late sonatas opp. 101, 106 and 109-111. Here, Beethoven's late piano sonatas can be discovered in a most natural & tonally beautiful way. Written between 1816 - 1822 when the composer was completely deaf, Beethoven's last sonatas are highly subjective artistic and personal confessions. The sonatas constitute one of the cornerstones of Beethoven's mysterious late style next to the five last quartets.
