Lyndon Baines Johnson, Margaret Thatcher, Bill Clinton, Tony Blair, Barack Obama, Gordon Brown, Theresa May, and Donald Trump: each had different motivations, methods, and paths, but they all sought the highest office. And yet when they reached their goal, they often found that the power they had imagined was illusory. Their sweeping visions of reform faltered. They faced bureaucratic obstructions, but often the biggest obstruction was their own character. However, their personalities could help them as much as hurt them. Arguably the most successful of them, LBJ showed little indication that he supported what he is best known for - the Civil Rights Act - but his grit, resolve, and brute political skill saw him bend Congress to his will. David Runciman tackles the limitations of high office …

'If you read just one work of non-fiction this year, it should probably be this ... what this book forces you to face is more important than any other subject' David Sexton, Evening Standard It is worse, much worse, than you think. The slowness of climate change is a fairy tale, perhaps as pernicious as the one that says it isn't happening at all, and if your anxiety about it is dominated by fears of sea-level rise, you are barely scratching the surface of what terrors are possible, even within the lifetime of a teenager today. Over the past decades, the term 'Anthropocene' has climbed into the popular imagination - a name given to the geologic era we live in now, one defined by human intervention in the life of the planet. But however sanguine you might be about the proposition that we have ravaged the natural world, which we surely have, it is another thing entirely to consider the possibility that we have only provoked it, engineering first in ignorance and then in denial a climate system that will now go to war with us for many centuries, perhaps until it destroys us. In the meantime, it will remake us, transforming every aspect of the way we live-the planet no longer nurturing a dream of abundance, but a living nightmare.

At the opening of South Africa's first democratic parliament in 1994, newly elected president Nelson Mandela issued a clarion call to an unlikely group: white Afrikaans women, who during apartheid occupied the ambivalent position of being both oppressor and oppressed. He conjured the memory of poet Ingrid Jonker as `both an Afrikaner and an African' who `instructs that our endeavours must be about the liberation of the woman, the emancipation of the man and the liberty of the child'. More than two decades later, the question is: how have white Afrikaans-speaking women responded to the liberating possibilities of constitutional democracy?
With Afrikaner nationalism in disrepair, and official apartheid in demise, have they re-imagined themselves in opposition to colonial ideas of race, gender, sexuality and class?

Sitting Pretty explores this postapartheid identity through the concepts of ordentlikheid, as an ethnic form of respectability, and the volksmoeder, or mother of the nation, as enduring icon. Issues of intersectionality, space, emotion and masculinity are also investigated.

Kill the Boer: Government complicity in South Africa's brutal farm murders by Ernst Roets, activist, attorney and deputy CEO of the civil rights organisation AfriForum, lays bare the brutal reality of farm attacks in South Africa. Among other things it investigates the level of complicity in the crisis by the South African government.
The book reveals accounts of direct involvement of members of the ruling ANC, the South African government and the South African Police Service (SAPS) in the planning and execution of farm attacks. Roets also argues that the South African media is complicit as analyses of news reports strongly point towards biased reporting on the issue of farm attacks and farm murders. Kill the Boer outlines the reasons why farm attacks are unique and why it deserves to be regarded as a priority crime. Roets has been actively campaigning for the prioritising of farm attacks since 2012.
What do the experts say?
“A most brave and important book, thoroughly researched.” - Frans Cronje, CEO of the Institute of Race Relations (IRR)

“This book is important to everyone with an interest in crime and politics in South Africa, but it is particularly important to those of us with an interest in the well-being of those who live and work on South Africa's farms and who produce the food we buy in our shops every day.” - Johan Burger, retired SAPS Major General; currently crime and policing consultant at the Institute for Security Studies (ISS)

“Ernst Roets' deep-cutting book on farm murders not only puts on record a very dark and sad part of the recent history of South Africa, but does so in a comprehensive way; touching both on the facts and figures, and also on the fears, anger and concerns that became part of the DNA of the farming community in our country.” - Theo de Jager, President of the World Farmers' Organisation (WFO)

More about the author

What was the fate of the first generations of black women born after abolition in America? Struggle: to create autonomous and beautiful lives, to escape new forms of servitude, and to live as if they really were free. This book recreates the radical imagination and wayward practices of these young women by describing the world through their eyes. Recreating their fragmentary life stories using a combination of archival research and virtuosic literary imagination, a very different vision of the twentieth century emerges, one that offers an intimate chronicle of black radicalism. Here is an aesthetical and riotous history - a revolution in tastes and mores that set the stage for the Jazz Age and the social upheavals.

In the twenty-first century, we like to believe that we have moved beyond scientific racism, that most people accept race as a social construct, not a biological one. But race science is experiencing a revival, fuelled by the misuse of science by certain political groups. Even well-intentioned scientists, through their use of racial categories in genetics and medicine, betray their suspicion that race has some basis in biology. In truth, it is no more real than it was hundreds of years ago, when our racial hierarchies were devised by those in power.

We are looking at the first generation in living memory who can expect to be poorer than their parents, even as the economy continues to grow. This is unprecedented. No generation in modern history has been poorer than its parents. And they could be quite a lot poorer. If we continue as we are going, the civilisation we enjoy today will not last until 2050. The early signs are already here. In 2017, we read that the economy was booming and stock markets were at an all-time high, yet at the same time we heard that wages were not keeping pace with inflation and food-banks had more 'customers' than ever before. If the economy is doing so well, how can most people not be doing well?

After her first book was published to acclaim, journalist Megan K. Stack got pregnant and quit her job to write. She pictured herself pen in hand while the baby napped, but instead found herself traumatised by a difficult birth and shell-shocked by the start of motherhood. Living abroad provided her with access to affordable domestic labour, and, sure enough, hiring a nanny gave her back the ability to work. At first, Megan thought she had little in common with the women she hired. They were important to her because they made her free. She wanted them to be happy, but she didn't want to know the details of their lives. That didn't work for long. When Pooja, an Indian nanny who had been absorbed into the family, disappeared one night with no explanation…

We've lost not only our sense of peace and democracy - but our sense of what those words even mean. Hamish McKenzie tells how a Silicon Valley start-up's wild dream came true. Tesla is a car company that stood up against not only the might of the government-backed Detroit car manufacturers but also the massive power of Big Oil and its benefactors, the infamous Koch brothers.

The award-winning Tesla Model 3, a premium mass-market electric car that went on sale in 2018, has reconfigured the popular perception of Tesla and continues to transform the public's relationship with motor vehicles-much like Ford's Model T did nearly a century ago. At the same time, company CEO Elon Musk courts controversy and spars with critics through his Twitter account, just as Tesla's ever-increasing debt teeters on junk bond status…

As McKenzie's rigorously reported account shows, Tesla has triggered frenzied competition from newcomers and traditional automakers alike, but it retains an edge because of its expansive infrastructure and the stupendous battery factory it built in the Nevada desert. The popularity of electric cars is growing around the world, especially in China, and McKenzie interviews little-known titans who have the money and the market access to power a global electric car revolution quickly and decisively.

Insane Mode started off as a feature on the dual-motor Tesla Model S, which gave the car Ferrari-like acceleration, but it's also the perfect description of the operating cycle of a company that has sworn it won't rest until every car on the road is electric. Here is a story about the very best kind of American ingenuity and its history-making potential. Buckle up!

'One day I summoned all my courage: 'Eugene, how does it feel to kill another human being?'

His facial muscles involuntarily pulled in horror. 'The person, the victim, gives off a smell,' he says. 'Even today I can still recall that smell. It makes me nauseous to the core of my being; that particular smell of fear that bursts through a person's pores and his body fluid.'

The blood of several anti-apartheid activists is on Eugene de Kock's hands and for most South Africans he represents prime evil.

Is there any humaneness to be found in the man who many call a monster; and how did he come to be an 'assassin for the state'? Anemari Jansen went in search of answers by looking at De Kock's strict upbringing, his first exposure to gruesome scenes as a young police officer on the East Rand and in the Border War where he became a hunter of people.

Jansen had exclusive access to De Kock's family as well as former Koevoet and Vlakplaas colleagues. She paints a picture of a highly intelligent but complex individual who was an outsider since childhood.

Jansen also quotes extensively from De Kock's diaries and an unpublished manuscript. In his own words, De Kock is scathingly honest and he doesn't shy away from describing atrocities in detail or identifying the superiors from whom he received his orders.

The book sketches an era and the environment in which Vlakplaas took place, but also offers a unique insight into De Kock's soul and his humanity.

Most books about the environmental crisis are densely academic, depressingly doom-laden and crammed with impersonal statistics.
We are the Weather is different - accessible, immediate and with a single clear solution that individual readers can put into practice
straight away.
A significant proportion of global carbon emissions come from farming meat. Just changing our dinners - cutting out meat for one meal per day - is enough to change the world.
With his distinctive wit, insight and humanity, Foer frames this essential debate as no one else could, bringing it to vivid and urgent life.
