The Berlin Album - Yuja Wang's impassioned survey of landmark works by Rachmaninov, Scriabin, Ligeti and Prokofiev

Yuja Wang stirs memories of legendary artists with interpretations of boundless imagination, jaw-dropping technical command and transcendent power

Companion EP captures beauty and eloquence of Yuja Wang's Berlin encore pieces.

Yuja Wang's philosophy of music is both simple and profoundly complex. “I want to relate all life to music,” she recently told veteran British critic Fiona Maddocks. The Beijing-born pianist's latest album for Deutsche Grammophon, set for international release on 23 November 2018, captures the white heat of solo works by Rachmaninov, Prokofiev, Scriabin and Ligeti, a trio of Russians together with one of the late 20th-century's greatest composers. The Berlin Recital was recorded live this summer at the Berlin Philharmonie's Kammermusiksaal during Yuja's extensive solo tour of North America and Europe. The Yellow Label also recorded her sublime series of Berlin encore pieces to form a separate EP, which spans everything from the riffs and roulades of Nikolai Kapustin's jazz-tinged Toccatina to Earl Wild's sonorous transcription of the Pas de Quatre from Tchaikovsky's Swan Lake.

This enthralling recital by the young American pianist George Li, silver medallist at the 2015 International Tchaikovsky Competition, marks his recording debut and launches a new relationship with Warner Classics. Captured at a live performance in the Mariinsky Concert Hall in St Petersburg, it presents a dramatically conceived programme of works by Haydn, Chopin, Rachmaninov and Liszt: a descent into deep darkness; re-emergence into the light, and a concluding, boisterous celebration.

Fairytales and myths have inspired composers from time immemorial, and audiences, too, have invariably been enthralled by the unending struggle between good and evil. Central to the Vienna Philharmonic's 2017 Summer Night Concert are German, French, Russian and Czech fairytales as well as a contemporary fantasy figure that is Anglo-Saxon in origin.

In 2017 the Summer Night Concert will again be conducted by one of the most distinguished musicians of our time. Christoph Eschenbach, who also conducted the 2014 Summer Night Concert, is in demand as a guest conductor for prominent orchestras and opera houses worldwide. Since 2010 he has been musical director of the National Symphony Orchestra in Washington D.C. Having begun his career as a pianist, he learned conducting under George Szell and Herbert von Karajan. Since making his debut as a conductor in 1972, he has led renowned orchestras, including the Tonhalle-Orchester in Zurich, the Houston Symphony Orchestra, the Orchestre de Paris and the Philadelphia Orchestra.

On her new album “Russian Light”, Olga Peretyatko presents favourite arias and songs from her homeland Russia - by Glinka, Rimsky-Korsakov, Rachmaninov, Stravinsky and Shostakovich. Many of them are well known (Rachmaninov's Vocalise) but there are also unknown rare jewels on the album like the songs from Rachmaninov or the opera arias by Shostakovich. She teamed with the Ural Philharmonic Orchestra, one of the best orchestras in Russia, and excellent for this kind of repertoire with conductor Dimitry Liss, specialist for this repertoire.

The main focus of “Russian Light” falls on excerpts from operas that have left a deep imprint on Russia's national music. Among these are Glinka's Ruslan and Ludmila as well as Rimsky-Korsakov's The Golden Cockerel, The Snow Maiden and The Tsar's Bride. The latter piece represents a personal triumph for Ms Peretyatko, for she sang the role of Marfa under Daniel Barenboim to open the 2013 season at the Berlin State Opera. With her silvery timbre and solid mastery of coloratura she thrilled not only the audience but the critic of Der Tagespiegel: “Olga Peretyatko projects Marfa as a being so delicate and other-worldly that it strikes the knowledgeable listener to the core.”

Born in Kiev, Ukraine, Valentina began playing the piano at the age of three and performed her first solo recital just one year later. She has won prestigious awards for her playing internationally, including the Murray Dranoff Two Piano Competition (together with her husband Alexei Kuznetsoff).

Valentina Lisitsa has already performed at major international venues including Carnegie Hall and Avery Fisher Hall in New York and the Vienna Musikverein, and in countries as far apart as the Netherlands and Brazil. She has played with renowned orchestras including Chicago Symphony, Seattle Symphony, San Francisco Symphony and the Pittsburgh Symphony, collaborating with conductors Manfred Honeck, Yannick Nézet-Séguin, and Jukka-Pekka Saraste, among others. Upcoming performances are confirmed with the Rotterdam Philharmonic, Philharmonie im Gasteig, Munich with Münchner Symphoniker and recitals at the Victoria Hall in Geneva and Philharmonie in Berlin.

With more than 43 million views and over 52,000 subscribers to her YouTube channel, the young pianist is not only one of the fastest-rising stars of the international concert scene but probably the single most-watched classical musician, having rapidly overtaken long-established giants of the piano world in terms of global online viewing figures.
