“If you see one opera this year, make it The Exterminating Angel,” ran the headline in the New York Times after the US premiere of Thomas Adès' “stunningly inventive” opera based on Luis Buñuel's surreal and satirical 1962 film El ángel exterminador. Like the British composer's score, Tom Cairns' production is both spectacular and surprising. “Adès keeps the listener on edge,” wrote Opera magazine, “because one never knows where his dazzling palette of possibilities will take him next.”

Mezzo-soprano Joyce DiDonato sang Norma's friend and rival, Adalgisa, in Sir David McVicar's evocative production.

Borodin's defining Russian epic, famous for its Polovtsian Dances, comes to the Met for the first time in nearly 100 years. Dmitri Tcherniakov's new production is a brilliant psychological journey through the mind of its conflicted hero, with the founding of the Russian nation as the backdrop. Juan Diego Flórez (Elvino), Natalie Dessay (Amina), Michele Pertusi (Count Rodolfo), Jennifer Black (Lisa), Jane Bunnell (Teresa), Jeremy Galyon (Alessio), Bernard Fitch (Notary)
Orchestra & Chorus of the Metropolitan Opera, New York, Evelino Pidò (conductor) & Mary Zimmerman

Bellini's romantic opera 'La sonnambula' (1831), hinges on the love and misunderstanding between Elvino and Amina (the 'sleepwalker' of the title). Discovered in the bedroom of Rodolfo, Amina is assumed to have been unfaithful, and Elvino cancels their wedding. But in the dramatic final scene, he witnesses Amina sleepwalking, understands her innocence, and all ends happily. Mary Zimmerman's production plays with the dual realities of a rehearsal of the opera and a performance of the opera itself.

In his latest Decca DVD release, bel canto star Juan Diego Flórez assumes the role of Elvino in Bellini's romantic drama, playing opposite the mercurial French soprano, Natalie Dessay, in the MET's striking, modern-dress production, screening live worldwide in March 2009.

The MET's 'La Sonnambula' website reads: “Mary Zimmerman, who directed Natalie Dessay in last season's hit new production of Lucia di Lammermoor, underlines La Sonnambula's dual elements of sleep and wakefulness in an intriguing staging set in the present. Bellini's hauntingly lyrical score soars as performed by Dessay and Juan Diego Flórez, back from their sensational run together in La Fille du Régiment in leading opera houses around the world.”

The DVD release will benefit from the addition of the customary MET backstage and interview footage, familiar to devotees of their live worldwide cinema broadcasts.

Following Flórez's latest DVD release (Cenerentola, in October 2009), 2010 will also see a second Flórez DVD - Bellini's 'I Puritani', with Nino Machaidze, from Bologna.

Set in Egypt, Massenet's drama 'Thais' (1894) traces the ill-fated attempt of the monk, Athanaël, to rescue the soul of the celebrated Alexandrian courtesan, Thaïs. Though she is presently living with his wealthy friend Nicias, Athanaël persuades her to renounce her way of life and riches, but as she dies in the desert in a state of grace, he realises he has succumbed to her worldly charms and begs God for mercy.

Renée Fleming triumphs as the glamorous courtesan Thaïs in Massenet's romantic tragedy set in fourth century Alexandria and the Egyptian desert. The timeless struggle between earthly desire and spiritual redemption finally destroys the resolve of the monk Athanaël (Thomas Hampson), just as the newly penitent Thaïs ascends heavenward. Jesús López-Cobos gives a masterly performance of Massenet's sensuous score, with concert master David Chan contributing a ravishing 'Méditation'.

The first Met staging in over 30 years of Massenet's Thaïs is released on a starry DVD sure to win this beguiling French opera many new fans.

Renée Fleming is Thaïs to the life. She sings Massenet's taxing role with the utmost ease and beauty of tone while looking as glamorous as her famous predecessors.

Fleming's co-star is the great American baritone Thomas Hampson in the role of Athanaël, a part he sings and acts with mastery.

This is a star-led performance of one of the most popular romantic operas with the unrivalled pairing of Fleming and Hvorostovsky as the doomed lovers. Their onstage chemistry, emotional singing and outstanding acting make this a truly special and unique production. Thousands of movie-goers watched this production live in cinemas across Europe and the US in February 2007, when the production and the singing of the central characters met with great critical acclaim.

Valery Gergiev, Russia's greatest living conductor, leads Russia's classic opera, with a thrilling account of Tchaikovsky's most intense and passionate score.

Robert Carsen, described in the International Herald Tribune as 'one of the most sought-after stage directors on the operatic scene' creates an evocative and striking staging. Anne Midgette, reviewing this production in the New York Times, wrote, 'this remains one of the most extraordinarily beautiful stagings I've seen.'

Jon Vickers was one of the most magnetic singing actors of the 20th century and Otello one of his greatest roles. He understood how to combine Shakespeare's rich characterization and Verdi's dramatic music to create an overwhelming figure, one whose death left audiences deeply shaken. Vickers is perfectly partnered by James Levine's conducting and the Met's sensational orchestra and chorus. Renata Scotto is an appealing Desdemona, Cornell MacNeil is a menacing Iago, and Franco Zeffirelli's production is deservedly legendary.
