Yundi (piano/conductor), Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra

Yundi, one of the most celebrated and influential pianists of today, has returned to Warner Classics with the signature of a long-term agreement between him and the label. His first release under the new agreement, due for release in January

2020, will be an album of Chopin's Piano Concertos Nos 1 and 2, on which he directs the Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra from the keyboard. This constitutes both his first recording as pianist-conductor and his first recording of the Piano Concerto No 2. His previous Warner Classics release, the complete Chopin Nocturnes, dates from 2010.

Warsaw and Chopin have played an essential role in Yundi's career: in 2000, at the age of just 18, he became the youngest winner of the Chopin International Piano Competition. Since then, he has become recognised as a leading exponent of the Polish composer's music and in 2015 served on the jury of the Chopin Competition. Earlier this year, in recognition of his contribution to Polish culture, he received Poland's Gold Medal for Merit to Culture, 'Gloria Artis'. He first conducted the Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra in Chopin's two concertos in 2017, performing in Warsaw, Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenzhen and Chongqing

On her first Warner Classics album pianist Mariam Batsashvili combines solo works by Franz Liszt - a figure of special significance for her - and his contemporary Frédéric Chopin. She left her native Georgia to study at the Franz Liszt Conservatory in Weimar and gained international recognition in 2014 when she won the 10th Franz Liszt Piano Competition. Chopin was just a year older than Liszt and the two became good friends in Paris. The two pianist-composers are, as Batsashvili explains, “very, very different in the way they express themselves, but I can hear in their music that they respected each other greatly.”

Pianist Rafał Blechacz is returning with beautiful, ecstatic and very colorful French/Polish chamber music repertoire. For his first ever chamber music recording on DG he teams up with the supreme musicianship of Korean violinist Bomsori Kim.

Polish melancholy and French elegance are connecting to a wonderfully symbiotic relationship in music, a point well illustrated by the works of Frédéric Chopin, who, Polish by birth, settled in France.

For their first album together Bomsori Kim and Rafał Blechacz decided to combine pieces from both of those countries.

Rafal's playing is characterized by its elegance, delicacy, and a poetic solemnity that has invited comparison to legendary pianists including Krystian Zimerman, who is a Blechacz supporter.

Bomsori is a celebrated young stellar artist in Korea who is on the way to the top of the international violin scene.

They will perform repertoire from the album live on tour at venues in South Korea and Europe next spring.

This album will be released in connection with the DG120 celebrations.

Leif Ove Andsnes' last release of rare Sibelius piano works was universally acclaimed by critics worldwide. Now comes a release of very popular solo piano works by Chopin. The album includes all four famous Ballades interspersed with shorter Nocturnes.

Andsnes intentionally inserted the Nocturnes between the Ballades to serve as a 'breather' to the epic nature of the Ballades. In doing so he breaks with the tradition of performing and recording the ballades as a cycle.

This recording is a long-held dream come true for Andsnes, who has wanted to record the Ballades ever since discovering them as a teenager and instantly falling in love with them. These epic works have accompanied him and his career ever since. This is his first recording of Chopin works in 25 years.

The most-talked about artist of the 2015 Tchaikovsky Competition created huge excitement and world-wide media attention with his riveting background and “genius-like playing” (Boris Berezovksy). Debargue, who is 25, started the piano late at 11 years old, learning mostly in isolation. After dropping the instrument for three years to play in a rock band and study literature, he started formal piano training aged 20. Placed 4th, he was described by media as “the real winner” of the competition and received the Music Critics' Association award as “the pianist whose incredible gift, artistic vision and creative freedom have impressed the critics as well as the audience.” Valery Gergiev, the competition's chairman, broke protocol by letting Debargue play in the winners' gala and not prizewinner Dmitry Masleev. Lucas Debargue's debut album is a live recording at the Salle Cortot in Paris and documents his first concert in his hometown after the competition. The centrepiece of his first recording is Ravel's monumentally challenging Gaspard de la nuit. One of the most difficult piano pieces in the repertoire, which Debargue performed to sensational acclaim during the second round of the competition. “It's a great spiritual work. It's like a Goya painting, filled with light and darkness.” The recording also includes four coruscating sonatas by Domenico Scarlatti; Chopin's emotionally intense Ballade No. 4; Liszt's devilish Mephisto Waltz; and smaller works by Grieg (Lyric Pieces op. 47 no. 3, “Melody”) and Schubert (Moment musical op. 94 no. 3). Debargue says, “I chose the repertoire to go from early Scarlatti to Ravel, with a wonderful romantic bridge of Chopin and Liszt to go between them'.
