Half of One Thing is the story of a New Zealand soldier who is sent to infiltrate a Boer commando during the Anglo Boer War. His mission is to get information on the whereabouts of the elusive General Christiaan de Wet, the one person who still stands between the British and victory.
The longer Gideon Lancaster stays with the commando, a gathering of diverse and sharply drawn characters, the more sympathy he develops for them.
His predicament deepens when he is being treated for an injury by a young Boer woman and they both fall in love. This puts Gideon directly in competition with the Boer Commandant.
When he is forced to choose between his duty, love and morals, he hatches a grand scheme to lead astray a huge British expedition hunting for De Wet. Soon after, the war is over and Gideon has to return to his country.
Half of One Thing is an eventful spy story, love story and war story reminiscent of the award-winning film Breaker Morant.
