At the northern entrance to Prince Albert in the Great Karoo lies Northend, a neighbourhood home to a special group of people. They have a very special way of communicating with others through their stories, which indicate an inherent joy of life. However, judging by their environment and circumstances, it is clear that they have experienced many hardship, and for an outsider it is an enriching experience to meet them. Every picture in Slow Down look again... tells a story and is supported by explanatory text. These enable the reader to gain insight into the past and the present of this unique neighbourhood and its residents. The joy and sorrows of the residents of Northend - as well as their scant earthly possessions - are illustrated through Louis Botha?s excellent choice of photographic backgrounds. And yet the absolute neatness of their homes illustrates a certain pride - poverty without dilapidation. The intimacy of the photographs ultimately leaves the reader enriched. We become witnesses not only to the extraordinary character of a close-knit community, but also of its trusting relationship with the person whom they have allowed to tell their story. Louis Botha was born in Bloemfontein in 1955 and grew up on a small-holding north-east of Pretoria. After school he studied finance and followed a career in the Financial Services Industry. At the age of 40, and encouraged by his wife he pursued his hobby more seriously. He?s held several exhibitions and lives in Prince Albert. Discover and understand the key ideas that underpin the core science of chemistry and learn about the great minds who uncovered them. Written in plain English, The Chemistry Book is packed with short, pithy explanations of some of the most historic moments in science, from the birth of atomic theory to the discovery of polyethylene and the development of new vaccine technologies to combat COVID-19. Simple graphics, such as flowcharts and mind maps, support the text and make the explanation of key concepts easy to follow. Arranged in chronological order, the book covers key themes in the physical and natural sciences, such as geochemistry and the elements. Within each chapter, a series of articles traces the history of scientific thought and introduces the work of the scientists who have shaped the subject such as John Dalton, Marie Curie, Dmitri Mendeleev, Kathleen Lonsdale, and Stephanie Kwolek. Along the way, the book addresses some of the most fundamental questions in science, such as what is the universe made of, how is matter created, and what are the chemical bonds that make life possible? Whether you are new to chemistry, a student of the sciences, or just want to keep up with and understand the latest news and scientific debates, The Chemistry Book is for you.

This fascinating book, originally published in 1971, had its origins in a series of feature articles for the Pretoria News between 1968 and 1970. Since then much has changed and that era now seems as remote as Kruger's did in 1970. The original text is reprinted here with minimal editing. Pretoria today is a different place, not just politically but in the street scene. Though happily some survive in 2007, many of the buildings pictured here have disappeared, such as the old Town Hall and the first Opera House. Gone too are many of the original pictures, some burnt in the fire that destroyed the main part of Munitoria and the city's priceless archive. Kruger's Pretoria provides the memory of a town long gone.

This book contains an extraordinary collection of paintings and drawings of Pretoria since its founding. It is a fascinating record of Pretoria from a little hamlet on the banks of the Apies River to its development into one of the capitals of the world. The stories behind the paintings and the painters are a laudable contribution to the recording of the history of art in Pretoria. With this work, Eric Bolsmann has made a valuable contribution to Pretoriana and to Africana in general.

200 women from a variety of backgrounds are asked the same five questions. Their answers are inspiring human stories of success and courage, love and pain, redemption and generosity. From well-known activists, artists, and innovators to everyday women whose lives are no less exceptional for that, each woman shares her unique replies to questions like “What really matters to you?” and “What would you change in the world if you could?” Interviewees include US Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, actor and human rights activist Alfre Woodard, and Nobel laureate Jodi Williams, along with those who are making a difference behind the scenes around the world, such as Marion Wright Edelman, head of the Children's Defense Fund.
Each interview is accompanied by a photographic portrait, resulting in a volume that is compelling in word and image — and global in its scope and resonance. This landmark book is published to coincide with an immersive travelling exhibition and an interactive website, building on this remarkable, ever-evolving project. With responses ranging from uplifting to heartbreaking, these women offer gifts of empowerment and strength inviting us to bring positive change at a time when so many are fighting for basic freedom and equality.

Local interviewees include Graça Machel, Caster Semenya, Zelda la Grange, Mpho Tutu van Furth, Hlubi Mboya, Sahm Venter, Joanne Fedler, Ingrid le Roux, Gillian Slovo and Zoleka Mandela, among others.

A minimum of 10% of the project's revenue will be distributed to organisations devoted to protecting and advancing the rights of women. Each interviewee can nominate an organisation (or themselves if they are in financial need) to receive their portion of the charitable pool or they can select the principal charitable partner, the Graça Machel Trust.

In 1891 the first rugby football team from the British Isles embarked on a tour of South Africa. This tour began a tradition that survived the financial insecurities of the pioneer years, two World Wars, sports boycotts, and the birth of the professional era.
This book covers the tours from when matches were played on dusty fields and rugby players were transported in carts over poor roads in the Karoo, in coaches that broke down and on slow trains that, on occasion, caught fire. Tours between the World Wars when South Africa dominated the rugby landscape across the world. It follows the famous clashes of 1955 when, for the first time, a crowd in excess of 90 000 attended a rugby match. It deals with the all-conquering 1974 Lions led by the legendary Willie John McBride. Finally, it focuses on the two Lions tours that have visited these shores in 1997 and 2009 following the advent of full democracy and re-admittance to world rugby.
To be a Lion is to reach the pinnacle of rugby achievement in the British Isles. To tour South Africa, where rugby tours originated, is the crowning glory of one's career. To face the Lions has always been, and will always remain, one of the greatest honours for any player who dons the green and gold of the Springboks.
This carefully researched book is the first ever published to focus on all the matches played by the Lions in the 130 years of contests in southern Africa and recounts famous victories, agonizing defeats and nail-biting draws! A welcome addition to any rugby fan's bookshelf.

Chris Schoeman co-authored the autobiographies of Springbok rugby legends Danie Gerber, Frik du Preez (South Africa's Player of the Century), Os du Randt and Dawie de Villiers; other titles include Rugby Behind Barbed Wire; Legends of the Ball; The No.10s: South Africa's Finest Flyhalves; and South Africa's Rugby Legends: The Amateur Years. He has also written several books on the Anglo-Boer War, World War I and South African regional histories.
David McLennan is a well-known rare book dealer in Cape Town who has written a number of books related to rugby in South Africa. Together they are the authors of Rugby at Newlands: A History in 50 Test Matches (2015) and Rugby at Ellis Park: A History (2017).

Sacrificed is the English translation of Offerlam.
The Congo, 1961: A man is murdered in cold blood and his beloved is left for dead.
Fifty-three years later, Caz Colijn receives a phone call that tears her out of her reclusive life.
In Belgium, where she tries to trace her and her daughter's family origins, it becomes clear that that country's colonial past has had as much impact on her life as the apartheid years in South Africa did.
The phone call Professor Luc DeReu receives is less traumatic, but he too is ripped out of his familiar orbit when the woman he blames for his father's premature death re-enters his bland existence.
In the meantime, Erevu and his grandson must trace the nkísi taken from them more than five decades ago in order for them to fulfil their holy mission.
When the paths of this group of people cross, it leads once again to murder.
'Tension, romance and the secret of unseen things are Chanette Paul's forte. In Sacrificed she pushes these further to include megalomania, greed and a lust for power carried through to a third generation.' - Jeanette Ferreira

Book One of Fiskardo's War marks the start of a series of unforgettable, epic historical fiction for readers of Ken Follett and Kate Mosse. 'A powerfully impressive debut. Multi-layered, compelling and intriguing, The Silver Wolf draws us into the murky underbelly of Europe's Thirty Years' War. Sharon Stone, one of the most renowned actresses in the world, suffered a massive stroke that cost her not only her health, but her career, family, fortune, and global fame. In The Beauty of Living Twice, she chronicles her efforts to rebuild her life, and the slow road back to wholeness and health. In an industry that doesn't accept failure, in a world where too many voices are silenced, Stone found the power to return, the courage to speak up, and the will to make a difference in the lives of women and children around the globe.
Over the course of these intimate pages, Stone talks about her pivotal roles, her life-changing friendships, her worst disappointments, and her greatest accomplishments. She reveals how she went from a childhood of trauma and violence to a business that in many ways echoed those same assaults, under cover of money and glamour. She describes the strength and meaning she found in her children, and in her humanitarian efforts. And ultimately, she shares how she fought her way back to find not only her truth, but her family's reconciliation and love.

Stone made headlines not just for her talent and beauty, but for her candour and her refusal to 'play nice,' and it's those same qualities that make this memoir so powerful. The Beauty of Living Twice is a book for the wounded, and a book for the survivors; it's a celebration of women's strength and resilience, a reckoning, and a call to activism. It is proof that it's never too late to raise your voice, and speak out.

Your family doesn't fit the mould. So what?

Lucy had it all: an exciting career, a rock-star husband, great friends, a size ten waist and pelvic floor muscles that could crack a walnut. And then, she had kids.

Since giving birth to her second child, Lucy's life is totally unrecognisable. A 'flab-alanche' hangs over the top of her jeans, the romance in her marriage is officially dead and so is the career it took her years to build. Instead of playing the cello behind superstars at packed-out arenas, Lucy now spends most days mopping up broccoli vomit whilst listening to her four-year-old recite tedious facts about the gall bladder.

M is for Mummy is a frank and funny story about a unique family who don't quite fit in to any mould in society, and about a mother doing everything she can to help her extraordinary son find his place in an ordinary world.

Muako Maepa is no ordinary 15-year-old.

This ambitious young teen with a passion for cooking has just released his first cookbook, Tell Me What You Eat and I'll Tell You Who You Are.

Tell Me What You Eat And I'll Tell You Who You Are is a cookbook with homebrew, fast food and chocolate recipes written by Muako Maepa. At the age of 15, Muako invites us into a world of culinary delight and we learn more about him, his life and his love for food and cooking.

More than a mere recipe book, this book gives an insight into the thought process of an exceptional young South African boy. The recipes are easy to follow and although aimed at his peers, Muako has included recipes that will have many adults rushing for the kitchen.

“KNOWING HOW TO COOK IS ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT THINGS YOU COULD EVER LEARN.” - Muako Maepa

Nothing is more convenient than fast food. But homemade is often tastier and healthier. With Tell Me What You Eat and I'll Tell You Who You Are you can have the best of both worlds. This collection of quick and comforting recipes for kids on the go will change teens' perspective on homemade food forever. Brought to you by Muako Maepa, a fifteen-year-old boy, this user-friendly cookbook shows his peers just how easy it is to make dishes like spaghetti Bolognese and Mac and Cheese themselves; that behind words like ravioli and pasta di Pomodoro there are only a few explanations needed; that fast food like a pizza and a burger and chips taste just so much better when made at home; and that nothing beats the smell of baked chocolate cake and brownies when it comes out of the kitchen close to the lounge.
